Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

To be accepted into the college of education at UNLV, NSC, or UNR and to

continue your Bachelor’s degree in Education you must first pass the Praxis Core exam.

This is important because, it helps to show the college where you are in your learning

journey, your proficiency in the skills required to become a teacher and your potential to

teach others what you have learned. The college must know where you are in your

learning journey to place you in the classes that best fit your abilities. Your proficiency in

the skills you have learned on your journey are also very important, a teacher must

possess a number of skills to be able to successfully manage a classroom. Passing the

Praxis Core exam can tell your future college that you have the skills required to become

a teacher. This is important because understanding the material, is critical to successfully

teaching it to others. The passing scores for the Praxis Core Exam are as follows; reading

156, math 150 and writing 162.

Exam Preparation

In order to prepare for my practice Praxis Core Exam, I used a lot of different

resources including, reading, watching videos, answering practice questions and setting

up an account with tests to take. The reading I did to help prepare described what to

expect on each test as well as what it is like to take the Praxis Core exam. The videos I

watched told me what I should expect from the tests, what the questions may look like,

and the format in which they will appear on the computer. The practice questions were

helpful in emulating what was on the test. Many of them showed how to solve the
2

question and provided the answer. I created a free account on Khan Academy where I

was able to take placement tests that allowed me to see the areas, I needed improvement

in. This website even set up a study program to let me know how much I needed to study

each day in order to pass each portion of the Praxis Core exam. One other valuable

resource in preparing for the test was my husband, he was able to explain a few math

areas I was struggling with.

Exam Results

My scores for each part of the test varied greatly. In the mathematics portion, I

scored 78% which tells me I am borderline to pass. In Reading, I scored 60% which

means I need improvement. Finally, in writing I scored 82% which tells me that I am

likely to pass that portion.

Future Exam Preparation

To further prepare myself for my Praxis Core exam I will continue to use the

Khan academy study plan. I enjoyed the feature that created a study plan based on a

practice test and the time I had to study. The study plan was easy to follow and broken

down into easy to complete daily tasks. In the future, I will concentrate most on reading;

where I was least likely to pass. My second area of concern is mathematics where my

score was borderline. I am not guaranteed to pass writing either, so I will make sure to

spend some time practicing in this area as well. I will not be purchasing any materials to

study with as I believe using the Kahn Academy was a great tool and with more time to
3

study, I will be able to master all three areas of the Praxis Core test. If need be, I will

work with a tutor to increase my reading score.
