METHOD OF WORK

BOILER HOUSE FOUNDATION

lt. METHOD OF WORK. FOTLER HOUSE FOUNDATTON

1 Excavation Soil
a General
All excavation shall conform to the levels, line and profiles indicated by drawing or
specification or bottt, when back filled by equipment the dimension of the excavation
shall be large enough to allow the proper space for the back filling operation.
b Trimming
After excavation to $e required dimension, the faces and beds of alt excavation shall be
carefully trimmed to the required profiles and cleaned of all lose mud, dirt and other
debris.
c Equipment
- Excavation for soil
Quantity of excavation :24,,150 cum
Capacity prcduction :
35 cumlHours
Duration : 134 days effective
Amount Excavator

SoilDisposal
a DisposalArea
Surplus soilshall be disposed in the appropdate area.

b SoilSeparation
All soil suitable for back fiiling, filling and banking shall be placed in the orderly stock yard
separated from any debris, rubbish, and other unsuitable materials.

Concrete Work
a General
This chapter describe the concrete work, form work reinforcement work and the ottrer
work related with concrete work.
b Transportation
The transportation time shall not exceed g0 minutes in a moderate climate. Concrete
transported for more then 90 minutes may be used if it is proven by necessary test that
the concrete satisfies allthe requirements given in the specification.
c Placing
The placing of the concrete shall be canied out in accordance whit the following
) l'l stipulations :
1 Prior to placing concrete, the interior of all forms shall be thoroughly cleaned and
made free from all foreign matter and accumutated water. The interior of wooden
forms shall be wetted prior to placement.
2 The concrete shall be deposited at a position as near as possible to its finat position,
to avoid segregation due to re-handling or flowing.
3 The placement r:ate shall be such that the concrete will remain plastic at alltimes, and
will flow readily into all spaces between the bars, etc.
4 Concrete that has partially hardened, or has been contaminated by foreign matter
shall not be used.
5 Once placement has started, it must be canied out continuously until the placing of
the concrete for that panel or section is completed.
6 The drop height for the concrete shall not exceed 1.5 meters. Temporary openings
shall be provided for tall forms, to reduce the drop height and to enable easy
vibration. To ensure sufficient vibration, concrete shall be placed in horizontallayers
not exceeding 60 cm in depth; care must be taken to ensure that the top surface of
each layer is truly horizontal
7 Unless othenrise specified, allconcrete shall be thoroughly consolidated by vibrators

during placing. The vibrators shall be inserted vertically into the concrete, and care
shall be taken ensure that the concrete is thoroughly worked around the
reinforcement, anchor bolts and other embedded fixtures, and into the comers of the
forms. A proper number of spare vibrator:s shall always be kept at the site during
concrete placing operations.
Bleeding water appearing on the surface of the placed concrete shall be removed
before placing the next layer of concrete, or before starting the surface finishing.

Construction joint other than those shown on the drawings shall be kept to a
minimum. When joint are to be made, the surface of the concrete shall be thoroughly
cleaned and roughened, and all laitance shall be removed by brushing or chipping,
before an additional layer of concrete is placed
10 The concrete surface of vertical joints shall be thoroughly wetted and coated with a
smooth cement grout, immediately before placing the adjoining concrete layers,
11 Holes left by the withdrawal of tie -roads shall be filled solid with cement mortar and
the ends made flush with the adjoining surface.
12 Concrete placing for large lengthy foundations and sfuctures shall be so performed
as to avoid cold joints.
']lt Curing
Moisture retention curing of the concrete shall be in accordance with the following
stipulations :
1 All concrete shall be cured for a minimum of 7 days after placing, with the exception of
high-early-strength concrete which shall be cured for a minimum of 3 days. Although
moisture retention curing my be terminated if the strength of the concrete being cured
satisfies the required strength
2 During the curing period, the concrete shall be either kept wet or any loss of water from
the concrete shall be prevented. Abrupt changes in the temperature of the concrete shall
also be prevented. Loading shall not be applied to the concrete until it has attained
sufficient strength.
3 The surfaces of the concrete shall be covered with burlap, cotton fabric, or other suitable
materials immediately after finishing the surface. The covering material shall remain in
place during the full curing period.

4 Wooden forms allowed to remain in place during the curing period shall be kept moist at
all times to prevent the joints from opening.

e Form work
O,'l General
Allform work shall be canied out in accordance with the following stipulation ;

1 The design and construction of the form work shall ensure safe installation.
2 All form work, whether timber or metal, shall be accurately aligned and securely braced
against displacement and deflection due to construction loading, such as vertical,
horizontal, and impact loads.
3 Where it is necessary to maintain the specifies tolerances, the form work shall be
cambered to compensate for anticipated deflection caused in the form work by the
weight and pressure of the fresh concrete, and by construction loads.
4 Waterproof plywood shall be applied to the surfaces of wooden forms that are exposed
after construction.
5 All anchor bolt, pipes, angles, etc., to be embedded in or through the concrete shall be
fixed firmly in the forms, which shall be cut neatly and accurately to ensure a tight fit.
6 The intemal surfaces of the forms shall be coated with a form oil. The surfaces of the
reinforcing steel or construction joints shall be kept free from this from oil or releasing
agent
7 Temporary opening shall be provided at the base of column forms and wall forms, and
at other necessary point, to facilitate cleaning and inspection immediately before the

Backfilling / Filling Banking
a General
Backfilling shall not be canied out until all construction below grade level is inspected,
tested. Obstacles such as from concrete work, trash, debris, and broken pieces of
concrete or blocks shall be removed before the start of any backfilling
b Layering
Backfilling shall be laid down in layer:s. The thickness of each layer shall not exceed 30
cm, before compaction, to obtain a specified density, the soil thickness shall be reduced
when compaction is canied out be small-size equipment or by hand+ompactor.
c Compacting
Compaction shall be canied out using only the proper equipment.
The materials for filling, beckfilling, and banking shall be compacted to the degree
specified below:
1 Soils for filling, backfilling & banking bearing shall be compacted to required density. lf
the thickness of the fill soil under foundations or structure exceeds 30 cm, wel! graded
granular materials or lean concrete shall be used
2 Prior to compaction, the maximum thickness each layer before compaction and the
minimum number of passes by the compaction equipment shall be determined by the
field compaction test to ensure that the compaction meets specified requirement. The
above maximum thickness, compaction equipment, and the minimum number of
passes shall be decided by this test..
3 The followings measures shall be taken to controlthe moisture content of dry soil :
a The thickness of layer shall be limited to a thickness through which sprayed water
if absorbed to the bttom of the layer. When the soil absorbs more water than
necessary for tlre compaction, fte compaction operation shall be started after the
moisture content becomes suitable for compaction.
b The materials and water shall be mixed prior to filling by construction equipment
such as shovels or backhoes, until a suitable moisture content is obtained.
d Material Placing
Backfilling materials shall be placed carefully around the stuctures and foundations and
be thoroughly compacted. Care must be taken to prevent any damage to the permanent
facilities.
