Energy Transformation and Conservation
References:
1. Work text in Science and Technology ,Science Links
2. Experiencing Science :An Activity –based Worksheet for Grade 9

Materials: manila paper, pentel pen, video clip (flash drive), LCD projector

Learning Competencies:
 explain energy transformation in various activities/events (e.g., waterfalls, archery, amusement rides);
S9FE-IVc-39
 perform activities to demonstrate conservation of mechanical energy S9FE-IVd-40
 infer that the total mechanical energy remains the same during any process; S9FE-IVe-41

Objectives:
1. explains the relationship between work and power
2. identify the different type of machines
3.explains the machines are applied and combined in familiar tools that help man

Day 1
Introduction
Picture Analysis
The teacher will bring to class pictures a.)work being done, b.)work not being done ,c.)pictures of power use.
Then let the class describe each picture and note on the board their responses .

B.

C.

FollowUp Questions :
1.What’s the picture all about ?(describe each)
2. Which of the following pictures where in work is being done?
3. Give 5 examples (situations) of work.
4.What are some machines in your home that help you make your work easier and efficient?

Day2-3
Firm Up
Lecture Discussion
 The teacher will discuss to the students the definitions of work ,force, and machine (Examples of work :riding
a bike ,walking, and pushing a box .Examples of force :opening a door or pushing a wagon )

 Then the students will have an activity where they have to make a venn diagram snd compare work and
power
Work Power

 Students will be asked if work can be done without power.

 The teacher will then discuss the relationship between the concepts
Firm Up and Deepen
Day 4
The teacher will give students some problems/equations related to work and power

1. How much work does an elephant do while moving a circus wagon 20meters with a pulling force of 200N?

2. If it takes 5 seconds for you to do 1000J of work, what is your power output?

3. A 900N mountain climber scales a 100m cliff. How much work is done by the mountain climber?

4. A small motor does 4000J of work in 20 seconds. What is the power of the motor in watts?

5. How much work is required to pull a sled if you use 60J of work in 5 seconds?

Day 5-6
DEEPEN
The teacher will let the students complete the graphic organizer on simple machines by indicating on the spokes

Day 7-8
Short Answer
The teacher will ask the students the following questions
a.list three machijes you can make to reduce the amount of energy you use in your activities (work)
b.Explain why is it important to use these machines
Portfolio
The teacher will let the students apply other applications of machines and demonstrate their understanding
of this lesson by creationg a 3-5 paragraph on their learning about work power and machines.
