Metallic Bond

References:
1. Work text in Science and Technology ,Science Links
2. Experiencing Science :An Activity –based Worksheet for Grade 9

Materials: manila paper, pentel pen, video clip (flash drive), LCD projector

Learning Competencies:
 recognize different types of compounds (ionic or covalent) based on their properties such as melting point,
hardness, polarity, and electrical and thermal conductivity; S9MT-IIb-14
 explain properties of metals in terms of their structure; S9MT-IIc-d15
 explain how ions are formed S9MT-IIe-f16

Objectives:
1. explain the formation of ionic and covalent compounds
2. recognize the different types of compounds (ionic or covalent )from their properties such as melting point ,hardness
,polarity and electrical and thermal conductivity
3.explain properties of metals in terms of their structure.

Day 1
Introduction
Guided by input and suggestions from the students ,the teacher will draw Lewis dot Structure for ionic compounds and
for more complicated covalent compounds.

Socialize Recitation
 What type of elements undergo covalent bonding?
 Consider Oxygen as an example .Have somebody make the electron configuration of oxygen.Analyze it using
the octet rule. What does one atom need to do?(expected answer is since one atom is not stable ,it has to go
through chemical bonding.)
 Explain that since oxygen is non metal and that we are bonding 2 atoms of oxygen ,covalent bonding takes
place.
 Discuss the three types of covalent bonding.

Demo /Exercise
 Ask somebody to try illustrating the bonding of 2 Oxygen atom through LEDS
 Demonstrate /illustrate the covalent bonding of :NH3 and N2
Practice Exercise
 Draw the covalent bonding of the following compounds:
1. H2O
2. CCl4
3. NF3
Firm Up
Day 2-3
Show the table of prefixes for naming Covalent Compounds

Divide the class according to readiness grouping. Give manila paper to each group and have them write all the
chemical compounds they know that use any of the prefixes from the table

Practice Exercise:
Name the following covalent compounds
1.CCl4
2.N2O
3.As2O5
4.NO

Deepen
Day 4-5
Have the students go to their groupings according to readiness .In manila paper ,each group will give examples
of covalent bonding and illustrate them using molecular geometry .

Gallery walk
Have the students post their work around the room .Ask them to prepare the chart below as their tool for gallery
walk.
Poster Examples I have Examples I don’t have

Have a short quiz about covalent bonding

Deepen
Day 6-7
Exit Pass
Have the students to give an example of a covalent compound .Then have them state its importance to society

Activating Prior Knowledge

Have the students write as many metals as they can remember from the periodic table

Body :

Metals in
Periodic Table
Have the students go their grouping and ask them to answer the key question : “Why are metals good conductors of
electricity ?” In order for them to answer the question ,assign the following task
a.Make a poster or illustration or a comic strip
b.Make a jazz or chant
c.Make a mime

DEEPEN
Day 8-9

Two column chart

Ask the students to read about the metallic properties .As they read have them fill out the two column chart
Properties of Metal
Properties Description
Enrichment Activity

Create a ten page scrapbook showing the different malleable and ductile metals and their uses.

TRANSFER
Day 10-11
Extend

Each student will be given an element to act as. They will be given a card to wear as a necklace to display their new
identity. The students are then instructed to walk around the class and "bond" with other elements and keep a record
of their bonds. Students have to work with their bonding partner to agree on and write a formula and name for the
compound they formed. This will help them emphasize their understanding of naming compounds. The cards given will
allow students to create ionic, metallic or covalent bonds. The student will have to distinguish between the bonds in
order to determine what type of bond they are creating.

Once they are done completing the compound, naming the compound, and determining the bond they have just
created, they can break the bond and find a different element with which to bond. After 5 bonds, students switch tags
with another student and start bonding again. By bonding using a different element you can have more practice with
bonding and compounds.

This activity will give students a chance to review compounds and use their new knowledge about bonding.

EVALUATE

The students will be given a periodic table:

The teacher will distribute an exit ticket asking the students to name a given compound and tell what kind of bond it is
and why. The periodic table will help the students with the naming and with determining what type of bond will exist.
The students will know that if there are two metals involved that there will be a metallic bond.

The teacher will also ask the students to write down anything they may still be confused about or want to know about
bonding.
