Case Study #1

Small Vineyard Staying Smart

1.Which capabilities of information Systems have the Cake bread used in redesigning the
traditional wine-making business ? Provide specific examples of its use for each capability
you identify.

-IS are used to provide fast, accurate communication and collaboration within the
organizations. To handle accounting, production schedules, and marketing, the winery
employs a local area network consisting of Hewlett-Packard server and two Mitsuba
technical workstations and Dell personal computers, all linked by an Intel communications
server.

2.Which information system technology supports each of the capabilities have you
identified?

-Novell's Netware provide fast, accurate communication and collaboration within the
organization.

3. Sketch out the computer network used by Cake bread. Show which computers run which
software and the location of each machine.

-Production Process(Local area Network, Novell’s Netware, Sensors) > Data

Processing(Mitsuba Technical Workstations, Novell’s Netware) > Accounting &
Marketing(Local Area Network, Dell Personal Computers, Novell’s Netware) > Packaging and
others(HP Printers).

4. Why does the vineyard rely on graphical workstations?

-Because relying on the graphical workstations, you can achieve your profit growth without
ever having to compromise the wine and relying on information technology increases the
yield variety and quality of the product in agribusiness.

5. Specify three ideas for further expanding the use of information systems
capabilities at Cake bread Cellars. What additional information systems resources would be
necessary to implement your ideas?

-to be able to determine the condition of the land where the grapes are being planted to
further the assessment and improvement of the wine. This idea supports the quality of wine
being assessed automatically by the information system technology.
-creating a system that will allow Cakebread Cellars to market their product to the
commercial market. Their product is known in their own country and only a few countries
knows about their product. This information system can help their company be known in
the market around the globe.
-by implementing smart farming. Smart farming can really help and boost the quality of the
products they produce. By implementing this system, they can determine the health of the
land and other details that can contribute to the taste and other qualities of the wine. This
will be a big leap in agricultural farming and information technology implementations.

6. What are the limits of what technology can do in wine making? What about "smart
farming" in general?

-The limits of technology in winemaking is that it cannot determine the exact taste or quality
of the wine. Technology can only provide data regarding all aspects of production and other
processes but it cannot say that the wine is good, bad, too old, or too early in its process.
Only the winemakers themselves can confirm the quality of the wine and its taste. Smart
farming can only provide the data you need for the steps that you have to undertake.
There is only so much that technology can do in our businesses. The success of the business
can only be determined by the decisions being made by those who run it.
