“Friend’s Inn”: A business Idea

The Humans, since their inception, have evolved dramatically and so have their surroundings
and lifestyles. One can barely find any similarity between the first and current generations of us
Homo sapiens. However among the very few traits that one can relate between the two
generations, a very prominent one is their need to feed themselves. In other words the need
for “FOOD”. Although the “Food” has been evolved as well according to the time, region,
agricultural patterns of the land and tastes of the people, but still food serves the same purpose
to today’s people as it did to the very first person, it “Feeds”.

Almost 7.5 Billion people are living on Earth today and surprisingly the food is the most basic
need of each and every individual. This fact is the reason that millions of people today are
involved in the business of food directly or indirectly. Even in Australia there are estimated to
be 85,000 places that serves food to the people living in Australia. One can find myriads of
varieties of food in the country that people from different nationalities and ethnicities can
enjoy.

My Idea for opening a food and beverage business is to open a fast food and café type of a
restaurant with the name “Friend’s Inn”. The name is inspired from the fact that Australia is one
of the most multi-ethnic countries that is the habitat of people that belong to dozens of
different nationalities and have developed a very friendly and peaceful atmosphere among
them. My idea is to open a business, a food place, where any man no matter which country one
has come from, when enters and dines in the place, do not feel alienated or stranger. This
means the place has to offer a very friendly vibe and a sense of acquaintance as well. As the
name Friend’s Inn suggests, the place should be managed by employees that are very friendly
to the customers and treat them gently and courteously irrespective of the nationality or the
ethnicity they belong to.

The cuisines that the restaurant shall be offering to its customers are the ones that are very
famous all over the world and are eaten and liked by large amount of population around the
world (like Fries, Hamburgers, Pasta, Coffee, Milkshakes, Juices, Ice creams ETC).
First and most important of all, while choosing the location of the restaurant, I’ll look for a place
on a location where the people might come for their entertainment (big shopping malls, near
theaters, famous beaches) and it should have some business enterprises, offices, big companies
near it as well so that during the breaks of working hours (mostly afternoons) the restaurant
can attract the customers from those sectors.

The designing and furnishing of the restaurant should be contemporary and neat that can offer
a sense of comfort and familiarity to the customers without making them worry about having a
quite formal body language and behavior as well while sitting or dining at the place. The
customers should feel like home and still being able to enjoy a variety of delicious dishes and
beverages the place has to offer. It should be well lit but the lights should not be too sparkly or
too dim, however it must induce a feeling of serenity. During the morning and afternoons,
there should be soft and slow English musical tracks that don’t make the customers (that might
be on a work break or in the middle of a hectic day) feel too discomfort and during the nights it
should play fast and energetic music to match the energy of the diners.

Now let’s discuss the food the business shall be offering to its valuable customers. As
mentioned earlier, the cuisines that shall be offered have a global acceptance and consumption
by tens of millions of people globally. As the policy of Friend’s Inn is to target as a big variety of
customers as it can, it shall be offering eatables that might have originated from a specific
country but are now being eaten in dozens of other countries. These food include Hamburgers,
Chicken sandwiches , Fries (very famous one) , Pizza, Chicken burgers, Black Coffee, Cream
Coffee, Chai , Milkshakes (Mangoes, Banana, pineapples, Papaya , Almond, Dates, strawberries
ETC) Margarita, Fresh juices (like Pineapple, Apple, Oranges, pomegranate, grapes, strawberry,
ETC).

If the location of the restaurant is same as discussed earlier, the next step to identify the
preference of customers is to place a “Suggestion box” near the exit door of the place and
request the customers to add suggestions of the dishes they wish to be added in the menu of
the restaurant. At the end of each month, if any of the suggested dish gains 30-35 % votes by
the customers, it should be immediately added in the menu.
Moreover, in order to attract customers, the restaurant should offer deals like

1- The customers dining in the first month of the opening shall be given a lifetime discount
of 10%.
2- One lucky customer from the first week shall be chosen and be given a gift (like LED, An
IPHONE ETC)

Now let’s discuss the names on the items on the menu and their pricing and profit

 The Australian Ham: This should be the name for a Hamburger as the term “Ham”
shall convey and it should cost almost nearly 4 to 5 $ and it should be priced at 9-9.5
$. This Dish should give a profit of 4.5-5$ in each order hence giving 50% profit.
 De Grill Burger: The grill Chicken burger should be given this name and it should cost
between 3-3.5 $. It should be priced at 6.5$ in the menu so it can generate almost
55% of profit with each burger sold. However there Should be an option of single
layer chicken burger and doubled layer chicken burger and if the customer demands
a double layer of the grilled chicken in his burger, its price should be increased to
8.5$
 The Crunch bite: The name of the burger with fried delicious chicken with crunchy
bites. The cost should be near to 4$ each burger and it should be priced at 7.5$. If
Customer wants, the layer could be increased with extra 2$ and thus this could
generate 50% profit as other dishes.
 Hot Winger deal: This is a deal of 12 fried spicy wings served with dip sauce and
fries. Its basic cost could be 5$ and it should be priced at 10.5$. 5$ and it should be
priced at 10.5$. 5$ and it should be priced at 10.5$. 5$ and it should be priced at
10.5$. Hence it should generate a profit of 55-60%.
 Friend’s Fusion deal:This deal would serve a plate of chow Mein with some
Manchurian sauce and some cream salad as side salad. It should be priced at 12$
while it hardly costs 5$ so there are chances of making 65% profit margin.
 The Friendly Pizza: Different flavors of pizzas would be served under this category
and each of the pizza could be prices as
1. Small pizza for 5$ (cost is 3$)
2. Regular Pizza for 10 $ ( cost is 6$)
3. Large pizza for 15.99$ (cost is 8$)
4. Extra Large Pizza for 21$ ( cost is 12$

Hence, the Friendly Pizza can give a profit between 40-60%. As we can find a large
number of people who likes to eat pizzas when they go out in a restaurant, so this is an area of
extra focus because in many restaurants, Pizzas consists of more than 50% of the total sold
dishes per year.

 King Shake: It is the name of a mango milkshake that costs between 1.5-1.8$ and should
be priced at 4$ so it will provide just a little more than fifty percent of profit.
 The Australian Shake: As Banana is among one of the biggest fruit crops of Australia, its
milkshake is names as The Australian Shake and is priced at 4.5$. It can give up to 70$
profit mark up as Banana shake costs like 1.5 bucks almost.
 Oreo Sip: This is a Milkshake of butter and Oreo and costs almost 2$. It would be Priced
at 5$ and thus it can offer a profitability of 60%
 Pineapple scent sip: The drink is a juice extracted from fresh pineapples and is priced at
5$. It costs like 2.5$ and thus can give 50$ of the profit
 Misty Orange: It’s a fresh squeezed orange juice served in a juice glass and costs 1$. Its
priced should be tagged 3$ so that it can generate up to 70% of profit.
 Friend’s Marga: The suggested name for a Margarita drink with lemons, mint and ice.
Costs almost 1$ and sold at 4$ hence giving almost 80% plus profit.
 Cold Corner: This should be the heading for the Cold drinks like Coke, Mountain Dew,
Fanta, Sprite etc. Each tin sells at 2$ price giving a profit of almost 20%

In order to assess and get the feedback of the customer, I will design a questionnaire that will
be in the form of multiple choice questions and the manager shall go to each table and request
the customers to fill up that questionnaire. This should be made sure that the whole process
should not exceed more than 2 minutes s it can discomfort or sometimes infuriate the
customers. The questions should be like:

1. What is your rating for the quality of treatment our staff has given you?
2. How much are you satisfied with the food that you had been served?
3. Do you think the prices of our products are relatable to the current market?
4. Are you willing to come back to this place in near future?
5. What do you think is the best dish among all in our menu?
6. Are you satisfied with the atmosphere of the restaurant?
7. Do you think the time taken for the food to be served was reasonable?
8. Is there any new dish that you would want us to add into our menu?

All of these above mentioned questions should be sorted out properly and formatted in the
forms of Multiple Choice questions and the manager should visit each table and ask the favor f
the customer to fill it down. The answers that are gotten back should be read on daily basis and
if many customers are telling something same, it should be acted upon immediately.

Moreover, if the customer faced any sort of problem or discomfort, the manager should go and
apologize to the customer as a satisfied customer id the best marketing policy. The dishes that
are suggested by more than 30% of the customers should be added into the menu list with in
short span of time and the dishes the customers did not like should be improved and served
more effectively.

If a certain dish is not liked by customers for a long period of time or there are negligible
demands for that dish, it should be removed from the menu and another dish should be added
in that and thus should be experimented. There should be a monthly check of the ingredients
wasted and ingredients used. The ingredients that are wasted should be treated more carefully
in order to assess the cost effectiveness of our dishes.

The drinks served should be chilled and all the basic hygiene should be properly taken care of.
The customers should be treated in such a way that they would love the atmosphere every time
they step in to the place. The customers should be asked if they wish to see any change in the
infrastructure of the place and if many customers are suggesting the same idea, it should be
worked upon. The objective should be money making and public service as well so that the
business results in win-win.
