CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A school environment is broadly characterized by its facilities, classrooms,


school-based health supports, and disciplinary policies and practices. It sets the
stage for the external factors that affect students. The term "school activities"
applies to a wide range of skill-based games, strategies and
interactive activities that support students' educational development. The goal of
all activities is to enhance students' understanding, skill or effectiveness in a
specific area by engaging multiple styles of learning.

According to (Chukwuemeka 2013), the environment is one of the


important aspects required to produce this type of competent individual. The
school environment can also be defined as set of internal features where it
differentiate one school from another school and with that it influence the
behavior of the staff and students. In general plays,the environment has a vital
role in the life of students, teachers, employers, and employees.

Significance of the Study


Based on the premise and statements above, the author was necessitated

to conduct this study to ascertain whether jigsaw method has direct effect to

students’ achievement in mathematics. The result of this research endeavor will

benefit the following.

School Administrators. This would serve as springboard to create a

collaborative model in making school policies regarding students’ academic and

social engagement which would benefit stakeholders. School personnel should

take hold of the responsibility in participating, listening, implementing and

assessing school program that best serve the welfare of the students.

Teachers. This would provide them the baseline data for consideration of

forming collaboration among teachers and to propose learning materials to utilize

the jigsaw method.

Parents. This would serve as an eye opener and encouragement to

collaborate with teachers in schools especially in homeroom PTA meeting to

monitor students’ participation and attendance.

Future Researches. This study will serve as reference and for them to

explore some factors or indicators not mentioned in this present study and also

guide future researchers who wish to conduct studies related to the effect of

jigsaw method and students’ achievements in Mathematics.

Students. This study also comes to like each other more, as students

begin to form cross-ethnic friendships and discard ethnic and cultural

stereotypes. Also jigsaw classrooms decrease absenteeism, and they even seem
to increase children's level of empathy (i.e., children's ability to put themselves in

other people's shoes).

Conceptual Framework

The variables of the study are shown in a schematic diagram as illustrated

in Figure 1
