A.DESCRIPTION OF A HEALTH WORKER


A health worker is someone who delivers basic health care services for those who are
sick or for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, simple treatment and rehabilitation.
The service utilizes the philosophy, content, method and skills of public health care. They
perform these care services directly as doctors and nurses or indirectly as aides, helpers,
laboratory technicians, or even medical waste handlers. There are approximately 59 million
healthcare workers worldwide.

B. CORE VALUES & QUALITIES OF A HEALTH WORKER


As nurses, these qualities will help their patients to provide care and help the patient to heal
physically and holistically.
1. Open
○ One who accepts the need for joint planning and decision-making relative to the
particular situation. They invites ideas, suggestions, and criticisms.
2. Tactful
○ One who presides over an assembly, meeting, or discussion in a subtle
manner. They do not embarrass but can give constructive criticism.
3. Coordinator
○ One who brings agreement and harmony into the health care activity.
4. Objective
○ One who is unbiased and fair in decision-making.
5. Good listener
○ One who is always available for the participant to voice out their sentiments and
needs.
6. Good communicator
○ One who provides participants with clear and relevant information.
7. Keen observer
○ One who monitors the proceedings, processes and participant’s behavior.

8. Efficient
○ One who is knowledgeable about everything relevant to his practice and has
the expected necessary skills to carry out the care.
9. Flexible
○ One who is able to cope and adjust with different situations.
10. Critical thinker
○ One who is able to analyze and evaluate a situation objectively in order to
prioritize and make key decisions.
11. Systematic
○ One who knows how to organize sessions into a sequential or logical order
12. Creative/Resourceful
○ One who is able to use the available resources which involves participants.
13. Knowledgeable
○ One who is able to impart relevant, updated and sufficient input.
14. With sense of humor
○ One who knows how to place an appropriate touch of humor to keep a high
morale for the patient and keep the audience alive.
15. Change agent
○ One who involves the patient actively and is able to shift the responsibility
between them for the patient’s own learning.
16. Empathetic and Caring
○ One who projects the confidence and patience to help them maintain hope or
the sense of continued possibility for growth and change.
17. Psychomotor Skills
○ One who maximizes client comfort and dignity, optimizes the client’s ability to
respond positively, provides the highest level of accuracy of information, and
provides for the most favorable patient outcomes
18. Professional
○ One who involves the characteristics of a nurse that reflects his or her
professional status. These characteristics involve behaviors with regard to self,
patients, others, and the public as they reflect the values of the nursing
profession. They are knowledgeable in their subject matter, conscientious in
their actions, and responsible for themselves and others

19. Ethical and Legal Consideration


○ One who can demonstrate accountability, responsibility, confidentiality,
truthfulness, fidelity, and justice.

C. FUNCTIONS OF A HEALTH WORKER


1. Health service provider
○ Carries out health services contributing to the promotion of health, prevention of
illness, early treatment of illness, and rehabilitation.
○ Appraises health needs and hazards (existing or potential).
2. Facilitator
○ Helps plan a comprehensive health program with the patient.
○ Provides continuing guidance and supervisory assistance.
3. Health counselor:
○ Gives appropriate advice and broadening the client’s insight in order to make
appropriate decisions towards positive resolution
○ Provides health counseling including emotional support to individuals, family,
group and community.
4. Co-researcher
○ Provides necessary stimulation for a more complex study of problems.
○ Enforces prompt and intelligent reporting of epidemiologic investigation of
diseases.
○ Participates in planning for the study and in formulating procedures
○ Assists in the collection of data.
○ Helps interpret findings collectively.
○ Acts according to the result of the research.
○ Plans and conducts related studies that contribute to the improvement of
nursing and health services, either independently or in collaboration with other
members of the health team.
5. Member of a team
○ Listens, contributes, and teaches within the operating team.
○ Helps create multiple services for clients in the course of health care, which are
coordinated and made as comprehensive as possible.

○ Consults with and refers to appropriate personnel for any other community
services.
6. Health Educator
○ Improves the health of the people by employing various methods or scientific
procedures to stimulate, arouse and guide people to healthful ways of living.
○ Takes into consideration these aspects of health education.

c. Communication- exchange of information
