Risk Assessment:
All field trips have an element of risk. The risks will vary according to the nature of the trip, the supervision provided,
the destination and numerous other factors. Field trips are likely to involve higher risk than classroom activities.
1. Have you:
a. Ensured that there are an appropriate number of supervisors for the destination, planned activities and
dynamics of the participating students? E.g., identify accommodations required
b. Become personally familiar with the destination or if not, will another person with first-hand experience
accompany the trip?

c. Completed a hazard assessment of the destination and planned activities to identify any risks that
require additional care and/or increased supervision?
d. Considered the impact of weather changes or uncontrolled elements and have participating students
and parents/legal guardians been advised of appropriate clothing requirements?
e. Prepared an emergency action plan to effectively address the following:
i. injury or medical emergency?
ii. communication with school admin and/or parents/legal guardians in event of an emergency
or a change in plans?
iii. contingency plans in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen event happening?
All field trips must have a curriculum focus with outcomes that cannot be accomplished in the regular school
setting. The trip must be directly linked to, or be an extension of, Alberta Education’s Program of Studies.
