 Brief Industrial Profile of Faridabad District 
 

1. General Characteristics of the District: 
               Faridabad  was  founded  in  A.D.  1607  by  Shaikh  Farid,  treasurer  of 
Jahangir, with the object of protecting the highway which passed through the 
town.    Shaikh  Farid  built  a  fort,  tank  and  mosque  which  are  in  ruins.    It 
becomes  the  headquarters  of  a  pargana  which  was  held  in  jagir  by  the 
Ballabgarh ruler.  The district Faridabad came on the map of Haryana on 15th 
August, 1979 as the 12th District of the state.  The new District was carved out 
from erstwhile Gurgaon District. 

1.1 Location & Geographical Area : 
                The district is about 25 kilometers from  Delhi.  It is bounded by Union 
Territory  of  Delhi  (National  Capital)  on  its  north,  Palwal  District  in  the  south, 
Gurgaon District on the west. The rivery Yamuna separate the District Boundry 
on  eastern  side  with  UP  state.    Delhi‐Agra  National  Highway  No.2  passes 
through  centre  of  District.    There  are  three  railway  stations  on  the  Delhi 
Mathura triple track broad‐gauge line of the Indian Railway. 

1.2  Topography : 

              Faridabad  district  shares  its  boundary  with  the  National  Capital  and 
Union  Territory  of  Delhi  to  its  north,  Gurgaon  district  to  the  west  and  Uttar 
Pradesh  to  its  east  and  south.    The  district  enjoys  an  important  location 
geographically as well as politically.

1.4 FOREST 
There  are  no  thick  forests  in  the  area,  forest  area  in  the  district  are  largely 
along  rail,  road  and  canal  strips.  At  present  forest  production  extracted  from 
forest  is  in  the  shape  of  round  timber,  fuel,  wood,  pulpwood  and  charcoal. 
Round timber is further processed for furniture and packing cases and building 
construction works.

 1.5 Administrative set up 
          Formerly,  the  Faridabad  district  was  divided  into  five  sub  divisions  i.e 
Ballabgarh, Faridabad, Hodal, Hathin and  Palwal.   

           Faridabad  District  is  divided  to  form  a  New  District  i.e.  Palwal  on  15th 
August  2008.    Now,  Palwal,  Hodal  and  Hathin  are  the  part  of  Palwal.  After 
formation  of  New  District,  the  details  of  the  Administrative  structure  of 
Faridabad District is shown as under:

           HUDA  and  HSIIDC  have  developed  Industrial  Estates/Areas  in  Faridabad–  Ballabgarh 
Industrial Complex having around 3,000 Industrial plots in Sectors‐4, 5, 6, 13, 24, 25, 27‐A, B, 
C  &  D,  58,  59  spread  all  over  the  District.  State  Govt.  agencies  have  also  developed  a 
separate  zone  for  ‘Electroplating  units’  in  Sector  58  Faridabad.  The  Development  work  in 
IMT  Faridabad is complete and allotment of plots is in process.

3. INDUSTRIAL SCENERIO OF DISTRICT FARIDABAD 
     Faridabad  has  been  one  of  the  leading  industrial  districts  of  Haryana,  a 
popular  choice  for  setting  up  industry  due  to  its  proximity  to  Delhi  and  its 
location  on  the  Delhi  Mathura  Road.  Much  before  the  advent  of  Gurgaon  as 
the  posterboy  for  Industrial  Development  in  Haryana,  Faridabad  was  the 
favourite  destination  of  Industries.  Faridabad  is  famous  for  manufacturing  of 
Tractors,  Switchgears,  Refrigerators,  Shoes,  Tyres,  Readymade  Garments, 
construction  machineries,  Auto  Mobile  Parts  and  Light  Engineering  Products. 
Although, in the recent times, it has fallen much behind the neighboring towns 
of  Noida  and  Gurgaon  in  attracting  new  investment  in  IT  sector.  It  stills 
occupies an important place in the list of manufacturing hubs.

3.6 Growth Trend  
  The  growth  of  MSEs  in  the  Faridabad  district  is  in  the  right  direction 
because of presence of huge number of large scale & medium scale industries. 
New  industrial  estates  are  also  coming  up  in  the  district  to  set  up  MSEs. 
Although, Faridabad is facing tough competition from the neighboring towns of 
Noida  and  Gurgaon  in  the  field  of  industrial  development  especially  in  IT 
sector. It stills occupies an important place in the list of manufacturing hubs.

5. General issues raised by industry association during the course of 
meeting 
1.  Land‐  No land has been earmarked by the state govt. for SMEs running in the non 
conforming area.  Industrial associations have been vocal in their requirement for 
organised industrial estates for varied sizes and purposes. 
 
2. Long‐term  strategic  proposals  of  NCR‐Faridabad  being  a  part  of  NCR  has  been 
identified for a number of proposals towards mutually benefiting economic growth 
like,  the  common  economic  zone,  alternate  wholesale  market  for  auto  parts,  the 
peripheral expressways and so on. So, a time bound action plan is necessary on the 
part of NCRPB to implement the proposals.    
 
3. The  power  supply  in  the  district  is  irregular  and  insufficient.  Besides,  the  power 
tariff is much higher in Haryana as compared to any part of the Country.  Voltage 
fluctuations and frequent power cuts are causing thermal shocks to the plant and 
machinery  ofthe  enterprise.  Some  big  industries  slowdown  their  production  or 
shift their unit to other state to over come shortage of electric power; 
 
4. Common  Tool  Room  and  Testing  Facilities  are  not  available  in  Faridabad.    Many 
MSME Units are not able to set up Tool Rooms and Testing facilities independently.  
It  is  necessary  that  Government  set  up  such  facilities  and  they  can  charge 
reasonable amount for the service they render; 
 
5. Insufficient testing facilities in the District; 
 
6. Inadequate flow of market information; 
 
7. Difficulties  in  getting  Bank  loans  due  to  cumbersome  procedures  &  lacking  of 
awareness; 
 
8. Slow Technology up gradation ; 
 
9. Weak linkages between Enterprises and Institutions; 
 
10. Low level of labour productivity due to lack of proper training; 
 
11. Lack of proper maintenance of the Roads;
