• 324E and 329E electronic control The Electronic Control System controls many of the functions of the 324E and 329E
systems are similar to the 300D Hydraulic Excavators. The system contains a redesigned monitor for the E-Series
Series machines Hydraulic Excavators. The “look and feel” of the new monitor, the menus, and the
operation of the monitor is different from the D-Series monitors. The capabilities of
the new monitor have expanded and most functions include on-screen prompts and
instructions that lead the technician step-by-step through most procedures, similar to
Cat ET.

• Electronic control system The E-Series Electronic Control System uses a minimum of three data links to

• Discussion regarding engine The illustration above shows the direct engine input components to the Engine ECM
input components to the Engine (01) for the C7.1 ACERT Tier 4 Interim engine that are installed either in the engine
ECM or on the Clean Emissions Module (CEM) of the 324E and the 329E Hydraulic
Excavators. The components of the CEM will be discussed in the Emissions module
of this training package.

The Engine ECM can send and receive sensor signal information from other ECM’s
over the Cat Data Link or the CAN 2 (J1939) Data Link (03). Sensor data monitored
by the Engine ECM is made available to the E-Series monitor over the CAN 2 (J1939)
Data Link. Desired engine speed is communicated to the Engine ECM from the
engine speed dial, which is integrated into the Switch Panel ECM. The switch Panel
ECM communicates to the Machine ECM via the Machine CAN Data Link.

The Soot Sensor Module (04) communicates with the Engine ECM over a dedicated
Engine Local CAN Data Link (02).

The Engine ECM monitors all of the input component signals and controls the engine
output components appropriately. The Engine ECM also considers data from the
Machine ECM, the Switch Panel ECM, and the monitor for controlling engine output
components. (The engine speed dial, or throttle control, is integrated into the Switch
Panel ECM.)

For example: The hydraulic oil temperature sensor is monitored by the Switch
Panel ECM, which shares that data with the Machine ECM, which in turn, shares the
data with the Engine ECM. The Engine ECM uses that data as one of the inputs for
controlling cooling fan speed, if the visconic clutch fan is installed on the machine.

• Discussion regarding engine The illustration above shows the output components that are controlled by the Engine
output components controlled by ECM (01) for the Tier 4 Interim C7.1 ACERT engine installed in the 324E and the
the Engine ECM 329E Hydraulic Excavators. The components of the CEM will be discussed in more
detail in the Emissions module of this training package.
Sensor data monitored by other ECMs that may be used to control engine functions
is transmitted to the Engine ECM over the CAN 2 (J1939) Data Link (03). Other data
is made available to other ECMs on the machine through other CAN or the Cat Data
Links. The Engine ECM can provide engine and CEM mounted sensor data to any
other ECM or Cat ET over the Cat Data Link or the CAN 2 Data Link. However, the
CAN 2 Data Link is the primary communication path used by the ECM.
For example: During BOOM DOWN movement when boom regeneration is active,
the Machine ECM shares the appropriate boom regeneration data (from machine
switches and sensors) with the Engine ECM, which lowers engine rpm during the
regeneration condition. This strategy helps conserve fuel when the higher engine
rpm is not required.
Status data monitored by the Engine ECM is made available to the E-Series monitor
over the Machine CAN Data Link. Other data is made available to other ECMs on
the machine through the other CAN or Cat Data Links.

INPUT COMPONENTS 8_1

• Discussion regarding input The illustration above shows the input components to the Machine ECM (01) and the
and output components of the output components that are controlled by the Machine ECM.
Machine ECM
The Machine ECM can send sensor signal information to other ECMs and the
monitor (05) over the Cat Data Link (06) or the CAN 2 (J1939) Data Link (03). Data
is exchanged between the Switch Panel ECM (04), the monitor, and the Machine
ECM over the dedicated Machine CAN Data Link (45).

Information is exchanged in both directions between the Switch Panel ECM and the
Engine ECM (44) for operation of machine functions and engine control.

For example: If the machine has been idle for five seconds or longer, the Engine
ECM lowers engine rpm to a preset level, in an effort to conserve fuel. If the operator
then moves the left joystick to the SWING RIGHT position, the Swing Control Pressure
Sensor (16) signals the Machine ECM, which responds by ENERGIZING the Swing
Brake Solenoid (35) to RELEASE the swing parking brake. This same data is shared
with the Engine ECM via the CAN 2 Data Link or the Cat Data Link, which responds
by elevating engine rpm to the level set on the engine speed dial. (Engine rpm will
also be raised back to the speed dial setting when any hydraulic function is activated.
The signal from any of the control pressure switches or sensors will cause the engine
rpm to be returned to the engine speed dial setting.)
The engine speed dial is integrated into the Switch Panel ECM, but does not
communicate directly with the Engine ECM. The engine speed dial data is
communicated to the Machine ECM over the Machine CAN Data Link, which shares
the information with the Engine ECM over the CAN 2 Data Link or the Cat Data
Link.

The soft switches and the rocker switches control machine functions, most of which
are monitored. The switch panel shares this information with the monitor and the
Machine ECM through the Machine CAN Data Link.

An example of this shared information is the Water In Fuel Sensor (12). When the
water level in the primary fuel filter sediment bowl raises to a level that the sensor
probes can detect, the sensors send signals to the Switch Panel ECM. The Switch
Panel ECM shares that data with the monitor over the Machine CAN Data Link. The
monitor then displays the “Water In Fuel” alert on the screen and logs a code.

This information is useful for troubleshooting, in that these data files can then be
attached to e-mail messages or shared with other service personnel for their viewing.
These data files can also be archived for future reference, in case an ECM has been
replaced or if there is a desire to configure other machines with similar settings. Data
files may be saved from the following Service Menu selections:
• ECM Summary
• Diagnostics (active and logged diagnostic and event codes)
• Status (of components listed)
• Configurations (systems parameters)
• Tool Programming (specific tool parameters)

The illustration above shows the screens that are displayed during a SAVE operation
from the Diagnostic Codes selection. (This procedure is applicable to any of the
Service Menu selections listed above.) Data files may be saved from any screen that
displays the SAVE icon above the center soft key.

Some Service Menu selections allow the user to SAVE data files from several screens,
depending on whether the user desires to save the data file from the entire menu
selection category or from a single, specific sub-menu selection (when available).

SERV1886 - 06/11 -69- Module 2 - Electronic Control System and Monitor

69_1
The illustration above (an example from a 336E) shows part of a report that is
generated by the monitor. The monitor saves this data to a USB storage device as
an “html” file that can be opened in a web browser. The data file is identical to the
type of data file that can be saved using Cat ET.

Saving these files to a USB storage device directly from the monitor is easier, simpler,
and faster than connecting Cat ET to accomplish the same task.

Information displayed above is:

• Date and time when the file was saved (1)

• Machine ECM detailed information (2)

• Engine ECM detailed information (3)

• Monitor (ECM) detailed information (4)

• Active diagnostic code listings (partial list shown) (5)

70_1

This concludes the Electronic Control System and Monitor module for the 324E and
329E Hydraulic Excavators.

When used in conjunction with the System Operations Manual, the Test and
Adjust Manual, the Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM), and other service
publications, the information in this module will aid the service technician in
troubleshooting, testing, adjusting, and correcting problems with most systems and
electronic components on the machine using the monitor.

For service repairs, adjustments, and maintenance, always refer to the Operation
and Maintenance Manual (OMM), Service Manuals, and other related service
publications.
