Yoga is an ancient practice dating back thousands of years. Yoga is a known science of the mind and body and it becomes a philosopy that offers insight into every aspect of life: the
spiritual, the mental and the physical. It is based around postures that are designed to rejuvenate the brain, spine and internal organs. Yoga’s effect on the spine is to increase its
flexibility and to ensure a good nerve supply to all parts of the body, since the nerves from the spine go to all the organs and glands.

There are many elements to the study of yoga. Jnana, the path of knowledge or wisdom, Bhakti, the path of devotion, Karma, the path of action and Raja, the path of self control
are all vital in mastering the art. Gino Vannelli practices a style known as Bikram yoga, (or by the less technical term "Hot Yoga"). This is regarded as the most purifying exercise
because the room is kept at a temperature of 105 degrees to allow the muscles to be stretched easier as they loosen from the intense heat while opening the skin’s pores to detoxify
the body at the same time. Birkram is a very intense workout that usually lasts ninety minutes and students usually leave class dripping in sweat. It is possible to lose 600 calories
in one ninety minute session. One advantage for healthy people doing yoga in a hot room is that they can build up a tolerance for other sports being performed in hot weather.

Before attempting to try any type of yoga it is recommended that one check with their doctor to make sure that they are of sound health before they put added stress on them.
Anyone with cardiovascular disease should consult a physician first. Yoga is known for healing people with problems such as menopause, low stamina, insomnia, addictions, anxiety
and sometimes depression. It helps you relax by relieving tension, helps you to concentrate, keep focus and build concentration. Yoga’s posture exercises tone every part of your
body, even the internal organs, which help heal and eliminate toxins from the body, stretches your muscles, and increase flexibility. But most important, the slow gentle move-
ments of yoga combined with breathing methods, help to energize and rejuvenate the body and the mind.

 FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
With no shortage of great weather there is so much to experience this summer with the many
festivals that span music, theatre and dining. These are a sampling of our top picks in Canada.
The Stratford Festival
Stratford, Ontario, home of the largest classical repertory theatre in North America, is ultimately
attributable to the dream of one man; Stratford-born journalist Tom Patterson.
In the early 1950s, seeing the economy of his home town endangered by the withdrawal of the
railway industry that had sustained it for nearly 80 years, Patterson conceived the idea of a theatre
festival devoted to the works of William Shakespeare. His vision won the support not only of
Stratford City Council and an enthusiastic committee of citizens but also of the legendary British
actor and director Tyrone Guthrie, who agreed to become the proposed festivals first Artistic
Director. True to his vision, a giant canvas tent was ordered from a Chicago and the parklands by
Stratford's Avon River were transformed into a concrete amphitheatre with a revolutionary thrust
stage created to Guthrie's specifications by internationally renowned theatrical designer Tanya
Moiseiwitsch.
It was from that stage, on the night of July 13, 1953, that actor Alec Guinness spoke the opening
lines of Richard III ("Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun of
York) marking the triumphant end of what had sometimes seemed a hopeless struggle against all
odds. Patterson's dream became a reality and the beginning of an astonishing new chapter in
Canadian theatre history began.
The other production of that inaugural six-week season, a modern-dress version of All's Well That
Ends Well, opened the following night, confirming the opinion of celebrated novelist Robertson
Davies that the new Festival was an achievement of historic importance not only in Canada but
wherever the theatre is taken seriously. The tradition started by the visionary Tom Patterson con-
tinues to this day with the Stratford Festival producing dozens of plays every year.

annually. Here garden lovers savour the subtleties of the plant world as seen in the herb garden,

Big screen and big sound under the big sky make for outdoor excitement. Free Flicks returns for
its fourth fabulous season! One of this year's big treats is a focus on the films of Tim Burton and
Woody Allen. Four of Tim Burton's visionary films, Beetlejuice,Planet of the Apes, Edward
Scissorhands and Batman will be shown. Woody Allen classics Mighty Aphrodite, Manhattan, and
Bullets Over Broadway will also appear on the big screen. Hosted by Now Magazine and free flicks

Late Night NOW: June 20 through August 29 (Toronto)
Just as those summer nights start to cool down, Late Night NOW is just heating up! Starting at 11
p.m. every Friday and Saturday night (and some long weekends Sundays), hot DJs and live musi-
cal acts take the stage to carry the festival vibe late into the night.
Vancouver Festival - August 4th – 17th
Festival Vancouver invites you to explore this pre-eminent music event of glorious voices, magnif-
icent sounds, harmonious rhythms and classic favourites happening in one of the most spectacular
cities on earth. Vancouver’s concert halls will be filled with some of the best music the world has
to offer. Fifty outstanding classical, jazz and world music concerts will be featured over 14 days in

Vancouver International Film Festival - September 25th – October 10th
The 2003 Vancouver International Film Festival, Western Canada’s pre-eminent film festival, is
scheduled to take place September 25th through October 10th. In past years the festival hosted 400
screenings and attendance figures soared to a record high of 150,000. As the festival celebrates it’s
22nd year, plans are shaping up for the most visible and glamorous even in its history. The 2003 event
