Box shall be fabricated from hot galvanized sheet steel. In no case shall the material be less than
2 mm thick. Joints shall be welded galvanized and reinforced where necessary and galvanized
after fabrication.
Box shall be of sufficient size so that gutter spaces shall conform to the provisions of the National
Electrical Code and in no instance shall they be less than 100 mm (four inches) on all sides.
Box shall be provided with at least 4 studs’ supports for the interior of the panel boards to be
fastened to.
Outside of surface mounted box shall be given a coat of zinc chromate primer and one coat of
gray enamel.
Trim or panel boards front shall be made of cold rolled sheet steel not less than 2.5 mm thick.
Trim shall have doors with concealed hinges and have flush type combination lock and catch or a
multiple point contact with vault type handle for doors over 1200 mm high. Each lock shall be
provided with two (2) milled type keys. All panel boards shall be keyed alike.
Directories under glassine shall be provided on the doors.
Directories shall be typed to identify panel boards and indicate clearly circuit number and
description of the associated branch circuit and shall have at least 3 lines for each circuit on
power and distribution panel boards. If trim without doors are requested, nameplates shall be
mounted as directed later by the Engineer.
Trim shall be so constructed as to cover and overlap dead front shield which covers all terminals
and bus-compartment to torn a dead front panel.
Trim shall be provided with rotating trim quarter turn clamps, which engage the flange of box for
fastening. Use of screws engaging holes in the flange of the box for fastening trim will not be
acceptable. Clamp heads screws for flush mounted cabinets shall be oval -head and shall be
countersunk and flush with trim.
Trim shall be given a coat of zinc chromate primer and one coat of gray enamel.
Buses shall be 98 % pure electrolytic copper and be based on a total temperature rise of 30
degrees and a maximum current of 800 A per square inch of cross-sectional area, clamped
contact surfaces of not more than 150 A per square inch.
Buses shall be rigidly supported on molded insulators and shall be so designed that branch circuit
devices can be removed without disturbing adjacent units or additional machining, drilling or
tapping. Phase bussing shale be full -height of design space. Necessary bussing, drilling and
blank plates shack be provided for installation of future circuit devices where so indicated on the
Drawings.
Buses shall have sufficient capacity to carry the maximum short circuit duty of the main protective
device which is at least the maximum short circuit at the point of application without showing any
signs of deterioration and shall have a normal current rating equal to at least the frame size rating
of the main broker or twice the maximum connected load in case no protective device is indicated.
All screws and bolts used for making copper connections shall be equipped with block washers.
Riveted bus connections will not be acceptable.
Mains shall be equipped with solder less pressure type connectors and have means to prevent
swiveling of connectors.
Solid neutral bar shall be insulated and shall incorporate one solder less box type connector for
the neutral wire of each Branch circuit and one for the main incoming neutral wire. Neutral shot be
fully sized and rated as phase bus bars.
Aluminum shall not be used for any interior panel boards parts.
Back pan or mounting frame on which buses and branches are mounted shall be of galvanized
steel forming a rigid support for components and parts. Reinforcing of back pan shall be By
flanging.
The operating handle of each circuit breaker shall have a 2 mm diameter hole to fasten a tag to it.
All panel boards shall be provided with a ground earthing connector or bar with a sufficient
number of terminals and shall be welded to the cabinet.
1.5 MOULDED CASE CIRCUIT-BREAKERS
Moulded case circuit breakers shall be selected in conformity with the Specification and as shown
on the Drawings.
Circuit -breakers shall be totally enclosed in a moulded case construction and shall be provided
with a front operated handle mechanism for manual operation of the main Contacts, in addition to
the automatic operation under over current conditions. Multi-pole breakers shall have a single
handle mechanism for simultaneous operation of all poles.
Each poke of the circuit -breaker shall have a thermal bimetallic inverse -time delay over-current
element for small overloads and an instantaneous magnetic over current trip element for operation
under short circuit conditions.
Circuit -breakers shall have quick -made, quick -break switching mechanism with positive trip -free
operation so that contacts cannot be held closed against excess current under or automatic
operation. Contacts shall be of non-welding silver alloy and shall be adequately protected with
effective arc-quenching devices.
The minimum interrupting ratings of the circuit -breakers shale be at tee terminal in accordance
with IEC recommendations, whether so specified in the schedules or not.
Frame sizes (or continuous current ratings) indicated shall be the minimum accepted ratings
based on a fully-rated interrupting duty (non-current -limiting) 'as shown on the Drawings. The trip
current rating (amperes) indicates the nominal rating at which the thermal overload element
operates.
When tripped by either the thermal or magnetic trips, the operating mechanism of the circuit -
breaker shall assume an intermediate position clearly indicated as TRIPPED between ON and
OFF positions.
Non-interchangeable trip breakers shall have their covers seated and breakers with
interchangeable trips shall have the trip unit sealed to prevent tampering.
Circuit -breakers of 25A frame size and larger shall have adjustable over current instantaneous
trips and be of the interchangeable trip type.
Thermal over current trips shall be ambient-temperature compensating to allow for an ambient
temperature higher at the breaker than at the protected circuit or device. Compensation shall be
applicable between 10 C. and 50 C.
Circuit breakers shall have a number of auxiliary contacts of necessary types to perform all the
control, interlocking and remote indication functions required.
