1 General

1.1 Scope
This specification together with the referenced codes and standards covers MV switchgear (also referred
as main circuit breaker or MCB) requirements, which are relevant for use with ACS 2000 4 kV variable
speed drives.

1.2 Standards
The safety requirements for the frequency converter are based on the following standards::
• National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70
• UL 347A
• ISO 13849-1
• IEC 60204-1

1.3 System description

ABB ACS 2000 used in this project, includes an Active Front End (AFE) for AC to DC conversion, a DC-
link with Capacitor Bank Unit(s) and an Inverter Units (INU) for DC to AC conversion. ACS 2000 is a
Direct-to-Line (transformerless) Five Level Active Neutral Point Clamped (ANPC-5L) Voltage Source
Inverter (VSI). The control principle on the INU is Direct Torque Control (DTC), which means that the
switching frequency is not constant, only the average switching frequency is controlled.

2 MV switchgear requirements

2.1 Application
The MV switchgear is defined as a switching device to disconnect the power supply whenever required
by the process or when a fault occurs.

2.2 Device types

Typical devices used as MV switchgear are:
• Vacuum circuit breakers
• SF6 circuit breakers
• Fused contactors or motor control centers

2.3 Electrical requirements

• Service voltage UN 4.16 kV
• Number of poles 3
• Short time withstand current ISC, rms 50 kA

2.4 Auxiliary supply
The following control and signaling auxiliary voltage and current ratings are supported.

2.4.1 DC control voltage rating

Control voltage Switching current Continuous current
24 VDC 8A 6A
48 VDC 1A 1A
125 VDC 0.4 A 0.4 A

2.4.2 AC control voltage rating

Control voltage Switching current Continuous current
24 VAC 8A 6A
48 VAC 8A 6A
120VAC 8A 6A
230VAC 8A 6A

2.5 Features

2.5.1 Auxiliary contacts

The switch needs to be equipped with one auxiliary open indication and one auxiliary close indication
that are used as status feedback to the drive.

2.5.2 Interlocking
In order to comply with UL requirements and to ensure proper lock-out, the disconnect device has to be
equipped with a Kirk Key that is matched to the interlocking mechanism of the drive.

3 MV switchgear control

3.1 Opening and closing commands

The frequency converter needs to have direct and exclusive control over the disconnect switch. The
close, open and / or trip command has to be wired directly from the frequency converter to the MCB. It is
not permitted to wire the trip command through any PLC or DCS system if it is not certified to meet SIL 3
level requirements.

3.2 Time over current (TOC) coordination

The ACS 2000 frequency converter is equipped with high speed line fuses in order to protect the
converter semiconductors. In case a fused contactor or a protective relay is used for converter primary

cable protection, the time over current (TOC) characteristic has to be coordinated with the fuses installed
in the drive.
