SOCIALIZATION
Socialization is the process through which people are
taught to be proficient members of a society. It describes
the ways that people come to understand societal norms
and expectations, to accept society’s beliefs, and to be
aware of societal values.

Socialization is not the same as socializing (interacting

with others, like family, friends, and coworkers); to be
precise, it is a sociological process that occurs through
socializing.
Gender Socialization
Gender socialization is the process through which children learn
about the social expectations, attitudes, and behaviours associated
with one’s gender.

As children attain a sense of their own gender identity (i. e.,

knowing whether they are a girl or a boy), they pay heightened
attention to information related to gender, and especially to same-
gender models. This gender awareness, in combination with an
early exposure to gender from multiple sources of socialization
such as parents, siblings and peers, has immediate consequences
on children’s attitudes and behaviours toward members of their
own and other-gender group.
