Students Satisfaction to the Services Rendered by the School Library of

Santa. Teresita National High School.

CHAPTER I

Background of the study

Most students depend their studies in researching where in they are

seeking and gathering data's and information especially in libraries that will

greatly help them. School libraries are where most students look for answers to

be familiar with. Now a days, there is a great chasm in terms of searching

answers because we know that we are in a modern society now. On the other

way, we are now dealing with the satisfaction of every students from the school

library. (Wilkins & Balakrishnan,2013)

Libraries hold printed materials including different books, periodicals,

newspapers, report and many more. This significantly can contribute to the

students in terms of their performance task especially those who lack in such

field of their studies. On the latter part, lacking of facilities or building for the

students to study and gather information.

According to Kotso (2010) libraries support research process by collecting,

preserving and making available anarray of information resources relevant to

their research community. Academic library plays a virtual role in teaching and

learning of an academic. It alms are to collect, process, preserve and

2

disseminate documents and information to serve the user community. In order to

make the resources available to its user easily and conveniently different types of

facilities and services are being rendered from Library.

This research investigate the relationship between students satisfaction to

the services rendered. This will help students and future researcher's to be

knowledgeable about the satisfaction the school library can give to every student.

The researchers wants to propose ideas to satisfy students by the services

rendered of the STNHS Library.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to assess the problems encountered as correlated to

students performance and their satisfaction on the services rendered by the

school library, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the level of effects of problems encountered in school library

by G12 students in terms of

1.1 Availability of resources

1.2 Physical condition of the library

1.3 Attitude of the librarian

2. To what extent do the problems encountered by the school library affect

the students performance in relation to:

3

2.1 Written work

2.2 Performance task

2.3 Quarterly assessment

3. Is there a significant relationship between the problems encountered

and the satisfaction of every students on the services rendered by the school

library?

4. What plan of action can be done in order to improve the services offered

by the school library?

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This study centered on the satisfaction of 102 grade 12 students on the

services rendered by the school library of Sta. Teresita National High School, in

the school year 2019-2020. This study is limited only to the satisfaction of by the

school canteen as correlated to their performance.

Significance of the study

The result of the study would be a great help, and importance in different

aspect to the administrator, canteen administrator, parents or guardian, students,

researchers as well as the future researchers.

Administrator. They will know the operation of school library in terms of

students satisfaction, whether good or not.

4

Librarian. They will be aware of the satisfaction of students where in it is

correlated to students performance.

Parents/ Guardian. They are able to know how school library satisfy every

students when they are gathering data's and information to help them in their

tasks.

Students and also Researchers. They will be aware about the impact and

satisfaction which is rendered by the school library. They are able to suggest

making their school library better.

Future researchers. The future researcher will benefit in this research by using

our research as secondary data. This can help a lot in them particularly if their

topic is somewhat related to this researcher.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE SYNTHESIS AND HYPOTHESIS

This chapter presents the review of the literature and conceptual

frameworks, synthesis and hypothesis drawn from the literature reviewed. Also

included in this study is the definition of terms.

Conceptual Framework

Important and relevant concepts about problems encountered as

correlated to G12 students satisfaction on the services rendered by the school

library are discussed in this story.

Satisfaction

This study examined school library services and satisfaction of students in the

Federal Government Girls College Owerri, Imo State. The Survey method was

adopted for the study and the population of study was 2756, out of which a

sample of 281 was drawn. Two sets of questionnaire (one for management staff

and one for students) were used. The data collected were analyzed using

descriptive statistics and Chi-square technique at 0.05 significance level.

Findings of the study showed that different types of services are provided for

students’ satisfaction; that students used the library for many reasons but mostly

to read library textbooks; that library staff are very effective in providing library

services, students are satisfied with most of the library service. This study
6

examined school library services and satisfaction of students in the Federal

Government Girls College Owerri, Imo State. Findings of the study showed that

different types of services are provided for students’ satisfaction; that students

used the library for many reasons but mostly to read library textbooks; that library

staff are very effective in providing library services, students are satisfied with

most of the library services provided except library hours. (PC Akanwa, Ijeoma F.

Mbagwu).

Services

Services are the non-physical, intangible parts of our economy, as opposed to

goods, which we can touch or handle.Services, such as banking, education,

medical treatment, and transportation make up the majority of the economies of

the rich nations. They also represent most of the emerging nations’ economies.

School Library

A school library (or a school library media center) is a library within a school

where students, staff, and often, parents of a public or private school have

access to a variety of resources. The goal of the school library media center is to

ensure that all members of the school community have equitable access "to

books and reading, to information, and to information technology. A school library

media center "uses all types of media... is automated, and utilizes the Internet [as

well as books] for information gathering.School libraries are distinct from public

libraries because they serve as learner-oriented laboratories which support,

7

extend, and individualize the school's curriculum... A school library serves as the

center and coordinating agency for all material used in the school.

Resources

A resource is a main source or supply from which a benefit is produced and it

has some utility. Resources can broadly be classified upon their availability —

they are classified into renewable and non-renewable resources. Examples of

non renewable resources are coal, crude oil natural gas etc. Examples of

renewable resources are air, water, wind, solar energy etc. They can also be

classified as actual and potential on the basis of level of development and use,

on the basis of origin they can be classified as biotic and abiotic, and on the

basis of their distribution, as ubiquitous and localized (private resources,

community-owned resources, natural resources, international resources). An

item becomes a resource with time and developing technology. Typically,

resources are materials, energy, services, staff, knowledge, or other assets that

are transformed to produce benefit and in the process may be consumed or

made unavailable. Benefits of resource utilization may include increased wealth,

proper functioning of a system, or enhanced well-being. From a human

perspective a natural resource is anything obtained from the environment to

satisfy human needs and wants. From a broader biological or ecological

perspective a resource satisfies the needs of a living organism (see biological

resource).
8

Librarian

A librarian is a person responsible for selecting, organizing, and delivering

information materials in a variety of formats such as electronic databases,

primary source materials, or printed books. Librarians also teach people to find

and evaluate information found on the World Wide Web using Internet search

tools and strategies. Librarians may work in different areas. Purchasing

materials, putting them into categories, teaching, assisting people with questions,

and working with information technology are a few of the possible

specializations.A librarian is a person who works professionally in a library,

providing access to information and sometimes social or technical programming

to users. In addition, librarians provide instruction on information literacy. The role

of a librarian varies across different types of libraries and locations.

Written Work

The most common forms of written assessment are essays and essay based

exams. Other forms of written assessment include lab reports, dissertation,

reflective diaries, portfolios, and case studies.Written assessments can cause

difficulties for many different students including: students with specific learning

difficulties (e.g. dyslexia) who may have difficulty with spelling / grammar or

structuring essays. Students learning through a second language who may have

difficulty with spelling / grammar and academic writing. Students with significant
9

external responsibilities, certain disabilities, or personal pressures, who may

have difficulties with organisation and time management.

Performance Task

A performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students to

perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency.

Performance tasks yield a tangible product and/or performance that serve as

evidence of learning. Unlike a selected-response item (e.g., multiple-choice or

matching) that asks students to select from given alternatives, a performance

task presents a situation that calls for learners to apply their learning in

context.Performance tasks are routinely used in certain disciplines, such as

visual and performing arts, physical education, and career-technology where

performance is the natural focus of instruction. However, such tasks can (and

should) be used in every subject area and at all grade levels.

Quarterly Assessment

Quarterly Assessment measures student learning after each quarter; come in the

form of objective tests, performance-based tests, or their combination.

Research Literature

The following related studies have provided the researchers with some insights

to the problem and have helped then enriched the interpretation of the findings of

the present study.

10

Galiher (2011) and Darling (2010), used GPA to measure student performance

because the main focus in the student performance for the particular semester.

Some other researchers used test results or previous year result since they are

studying performance for the specific subject or year (Hijazi and Naqvi, 2011 and

Hake, 2012).

Many researchers have discussed the different factors that affect the student

academic performance in their research. There are two types of factors that

affect the students‘ academic performance. These are internal and external

classroom factors and these factors strongly affect the students‘ performance.

Internal classroom factors includes students competence in English, class

schedules, class size, English text books, class test results, learning facilities,

homework, environment of the class, complexity of the course material, teachers

role in the class, technology used in the class and exams systems.External

classroom factors include extracurricular activities, family problems, work and

financial, social and other problems. Research studies shows that

students‘ performance depends on many factors such as learning facilities,

gender and age differences, etc. that can affect student performance (Hansen,

Joe B., 2010). Harb and El-Shaarawi (2011) found that the most important factor

with positive effect on students' performance is Parental Involvement. For

scholastic as well as digital libraries the user serves distinctive classes of users,

for example, students, examine researchers, instructing/non-teaching staffs, and

executives with fluctuated data requests. Libraries are assistance based

11

associations built up for the arrangement of important data assets and quality

administrations to address and fulfill their users' satisfaction with PG and UG

students and faculties. The examination is to attain a user's satisfaction on library

for the most part, investigates the satisfaction of library resources and services

analyze with students and faculties. To start with we gather information from the

institution based on user result and we need to examine the user satisfaction.

The information gathering depends on user questionnaires and respondents.

Here the satisfaction level is examined and it is clarified in the underneath

procedure. (International Journal of Applied Engineering Research 13 (22),

15443-15450, 2018)Well-resourced and functional school libraries are important

resource centres for teachers and learners, particularly in historically

disadvantaged communities where other information services such as public or

community libraries and multipurpose centres are few or virtually non-existent.

However, only a minority of the schools in South Africa have well-stocked and

well-staffed school libraries. In the Limpopo Province, the situation leaves much

to be desired because only 2.3% of the state schools have well-resourced and

functional school libraries. Importantly, for the different school library facilities to

be functional, an approved school library policy with endorsed school library

standards and models is essential. Amazingly, there is no approved and

legislated national school library policy in South Africa to support a progressive,

constructivist and resource-thirsty curriculum. (University of South Africa, 2014)

12

Synthesis

These studies are related to the present study in the sense that each study dealt

on "Students Satisfaction to the services rendered by the School Library of Santa.

Teresita National High School.”

However, each study bears differences in terms of respondents and place of

focus.

Also the study is somehow similar to the previous study. They are similar in

terms of variables. Looking for the level satisfaction on the services rendered by

the school library.

However, they are different in terms of respondents and were the research was

being conducted. The present study uses the grade 12 students in Sta. Teresita

National High School.

Synthesis of the Literature

The foregoing literature's presented were selected on the basis of their

significance in promoting a directional path for this study. Out of review, the

researcher also identified some gaps in the literature pertinent to this construct

which provided justification in the choice of the topic, particularly the “Students

Satisfaction to the services rendered by the School Library.”

13

Conceptual Framework

The concepts derived from the different sources like books, journals and studies

conducted provided insights which are made possible the emergence of a clear

vision of the conceptual framework of this study.

The IPO Model was adapted to strengthen the concepts presented. The input

included the problems encountered in the school library in terms of availability of

resources, physical condition of the library and the attitude of the librarian. Also

the level of satisfaction on the services rendered by the school library in terms of

written output, performance task and quarterly assessment. The process of

finding the relationship between the satisfaction of the students to the services

rendered by the school library is through a survey questionnaire. The proposed

action plan will widened the knowledge of students about the satisfaction to the

services rendered by the school library.
