El curso busca introducir a los estudiantes los principales acontecimientos del desarrollo económico
mundial de los siglos XX y XXI. Se abordarán hechos, económicos y políticos, que han incidido en
el desarrollo de la economía mundial, tales como las guerras mundiales, la Gran Depresión, los
procesos de descolonización en África y Asia, el auge y decadencia de la Unión Soviética, la crisis
latinoamericana de finales del siglo XX, hasta la crisis económica y financiera actual. A partir del
estudio de dichos eventos históricos se pretende dar cuenta de interrogantes sobre el desarrollo y
crecimiento económico mundial como: ¿En qué consistió la estructura económica de la Alemania
Nazi? ¿Cuáles fueron las características del modelo económico soviético, las causas de su fracaso
y las características de la transición hacia la economía de mercado? ¿Cómo logró Estados Unidos
posesionarse como la potencia económica mundial del siglo XX? ¿Cuál fue el papel del sector
industrial estadounidense en dicho proceso? ¿Cuáles son las causas económicas y políticas del
éxito de la economía China desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX a nuestros días? ¿Cuáles han
sido las causas de las crisis financieras más importantes del siglo XX y XXI, sus repercusiones en
la economía mundial y las lecciones aprendidas?
De esta manera el curso busca expandir y complementar los conocimientos generales de los
estudiantes sobre la historia económica, así como aplicar las herramientas teóricas de la disciplina
en la interpretación económica de los hechos históricos del mundo moderno.
2. Objetivos de la materia
Se espera que al final del curso los estudiantes tengan un conocimiento general del desarrollo de la
economía mundial del siglo XX y de los desafíos económicos del siglo XXI. Así mismo es un
objetivo que los estudiantes apliquen su conocimiento teórico y desde una perspectiva histórica
puedan realizar una interpretación y un análisis crítico de los acontecimientos.

4. Metodología
El curso constará de dos clases magistrales a la semana en las que el profesor ilustrará los
principales problemas y preguntas históricas de la economía mundial. El profesor guiará la
discusión sobre las interpretaciones económicos de dichos hechos, para lo cual la lectura juiciosa
de los textos obligatorios y la participación de los estudiantes es esencial.
Se realizarán sesiones interactivas con la herramienta de Response Cards, en las que los
estudiantes participarán activamente en la respuesta de preguntas sobre la interpretación
económica y política del desarrollo económico mundial y la posterior discusión sobre dichas
preguntas y respuestas.
5. Competencias
A partir de una lectura juiciosa, la atención y participación en clase, al final del curso se espera que
los estudiantes:
Nota: Los controles de lectura (sesiones interactivas) se realizarán cuando el profesor lo considere
pertinente y será a juicio del profesor indicar con previo aviso a los estudiantes las fechas de dichas
actividades.
Reclamos: Los reclamos deben realizarse por escrito, en los siguientes 10 días hábiles luego de ser
entregado el documento. La revisión puede aumentar, disminuir o reafirmar la calificación. La
argumentación del reclamo debe ser clara y debe basarse en los elementos del curso.
La aproximación de la nota final del curso se hará al decimal superior más cercano. Así, si al
computar todas las notas del semestre de un estudiante el valor obtenido –después de redondear del
tercer decimal hacia adelante- es 3.01 se aproxima a 3.1, si se obtiene 4.24 se aproxima a 4.3,, si se
obtiene, 4.91, se aproxima a 5.0, etc.
