5 Easy Steps for the Best SFP’s

The 5 easies are a brief set of 5 simple rules to create the best SFP that works
from factory, through the supply chain and to our Woolworths Supermarkets.

1 Easy to Identify

 Recognise in DC’s and stores


 Clear simple graphics inline with Style Guide
 Barcodes visible and printed on minimum of 4 sides
 Correct symbology ‘SHELF READY CARTON’ on top panel

2 Easy to Open
 No carton cutter/knife required for opening,
except tray and shrink
 No tape or straps covering perforations
 Pull tabs (finger holes) on panels where required
 Perforations tear easily and cleanly
 Quick to open (less than 5 seconds)
3 Easy to Replenish
 Cartons are designed to match shelf facings
 Product is stable when packing on shelf
 Carton doesn’t exceed 12kg for SFP
 Inline with category shelf requirements and dimensions

4 Easy to Shop

 Customer can remove and replace the product with ease


 Product must be easily identified by the customer
 Product branding/colour creates brand blocking on shelf
 Unit of measure should be on carton if front lip covers it

5 Easy to Recycle/Breakdown

 Secondary component should be easy to collapse

Styles of SFP’s
Products that are not self standing, that are unstable from
Cartons 1. U-Shape front-to-back. Categories that best utilize a U-Shape:
Medicinal, Biscuits, Stationary, Confectionary

Products that are intended to be stacked on top of eachother


2. Dual U-Shape
in an off location: Serviettes, Cups, Plates, Seasonal lines

3. U-Shape For any products that need the slightest vertical support.

4. Standard Wedge Products that are self supported.

Trays 5. Standard Tray Products that are self supported.

 TUN barcodes should meet GS1 specifications and must not be obscured to allow for
easy scanning in the DC environment.
 Barcodes must be positioned min. 32mm from the carton base and 19mm away from
any edge and/or side crease - except if box is too small to allow
Barcodes direct printed onto board
 ITF-14 only
 Must be printed between 80-100% magnification. Some exceptions are allowed for
smaller shippers where the barcode size cannot be achieved.
Barcodes on print and apply labels
 TUN barcodes must be 50-100%
 Either GS1-128 or ITF-14 are acceptable for print and apply labels.

Pallet Requirements
 Australian & New Zealand 2D pallet stacking patterns are required to be printed on all
SRT/outer carton packaging. Top panel preferred or base of tray.
 AU: 1165x1165mm NZ: 1200x1000mm
Pallet Configurations
 Pallets must be stable and efficiently configured within the pallet space, with NO overhang
 Minimum 80% Pallet Area Utilisation otherwise it may be rejected
Pallet Labelling
 Each pallet rquires a minimum of 2 labels, one on each of the fork lift access sides of the pallet.

Pallet Heights
The following maximum pallet heights include the height of the timber pallets (150mm):

The above are maximum height ranges based on outer carton gross weight (not the
inner case picks)
For square outer cartons (i.e box length equals width), pallet height should not exceed 1.5m
When inner cartons are packed into an outer box, pallet height must not exceed 1.5m
Max pallet weight is 1300kg (including weight of the pallet). Versacold max pallet weight
is 1000kg (including weight of the pallet)

Corrugated Board: When choosing a flute it is important to consider the gross weight, size
and logistics. ‘B’ and ‘C’ flute are most commonly used for regular slotted cartons and
perforated cartons. ‘A’ flute or a dual flute should be used for cartons with heavier products or
floor ready displays.

‘F’ and ‘E’ flute are more commonly used for light weight product and should be used
for inner case picked cartons.

Outer cartons and hoods must be strong enough to withstand shelf stacking and supply
chain transportation

Fragile Symbol

The Fragile symbol should be used for all glass product, fragile
bakery products or anything that is high risk in the supply chain

Limited Quantity Symbol

Any dangerous goods, gas or liquid should have


the limited quantity symbol a minimum of 2 sides (39x39mm WxH)

Woolworths Branding

In order to simplify and create visual


harmony across all SRT’s across the
supermarket, a choice of 3 point sizes
for product title are recommended
based on the height of the SRT. =X

Shipper Artwork Checklist - these are the elements that are
checked when approving artwork

Criteria Requirements

Dieline Must be the same dieline as what is approved in dieline review stage
Refer to guidelines (page 5)
Barcode Size ITF-14 > 80% Print & Apply (ITF-14 or GS1-128) > 50%
Extreme cases (small products) may not allow these sizes.
This is okay in this instance.
Only 2 accepted -
Barcode Symbology ITF14: if printed directly on shipper or print & apply - more robust
GS1-128: can be used only on print and apply label.
Barcode Position Min 32mm from the bottom and 19mm from side. helps to be marked
on artwork. Sometimes not do-able in extreme circumstances

Barcode number As per OBSA (business award)

Number of Barcodes Minimum 2 on vertical sides

Item Reference Number As per OBSA (business award)

Pallet Diagram Check one is pictured for Aus and NZ (if travelling to Aus and NZ)

State contents of the shipper Eg. 12 x 1.25L or 4 x 185g.
