SECOND CONDITIONAL

El segundo condicional habla de condiciones que aún se podrían cumplir, ya que

alude al presente, aunque la posibilidad de que ocurran parece más remota que en
el caso del primer condicional: I’d go if you came along (Yo iría si tú vinieras
conmigo).

La teoría
Al construirlo usamos el pasado simple:

If + sujeto + pasado simple + sujeto + would + infinitivo (sin to)

If I were a rich man, I would buy a magic pill to learn English in a week.

Aunque muchos nativos dicen If I was…, lo correcto es usar siempre were para
todas las personas gramaticales con el verbo to be cuando se trata de
condicionales.

Aquí, como en el primer condicional, tampoco es necesario empezar con if. Eso sí,
si ves if y would en la misma oración, ahí pasa algo.

La práctica
Empezamos con frases que contienen were. Ten cuidado de no decir /güer/,
sino /uée/. Repite en voz alta o estarás perdiendo el tiempo. Di las frases
contrayendo would y sin contraerlo, para practicar la pronunciación.

Si fuera hombre, me dejaría barba. If I were a man, I’d grow a beard.

Si (él) fuera nuestro jefe, le llamaríamos If he were our boss, we’d call him
señor sir.

Si fuéramos guerreros, ¡combatiríamos el If we were warriors, we’d

mal! fight evil!

Sigamos con la forma negativa. Wouldn’t se pronuncia /uúdent/.

No le gustaría (a ella) si le pasara

She wouldn’t like it if it happened to her.

No lo harían si no lo disfrutaran. They wouldn’t do it if they didn’t enjoy it

¿Qué ocurriría si un día no tomases café por la mañana? Crea 3 finales para la
frase If I didn’t have coffee in the morning,… ¡No aflojes! Verás qué bien te
sentirás luego.

¿Te importaría si me quitara las Would you mind if I took off my

botas? boots?

¿(Yo) Le caería bien (a él) si fuera mi

Would he like me if he were my boss?
jefe?

¿Heriría (yo) tus sentimientos si no Would I hurt your feelings if I didn’t

viniera? come?

Para terminar la práctica, transforma en preguntas las 6 primeras frases. Por

ejemplo: Would we call him sir if he were our boss?
