Some people looking for a free pet are great pet owners and YORK STATE

adoption application. While some rescues have lengthy applications, most

The Cape Disappointment
Light is a lighthouse
on Cape Disappointment
near the mouth of
the Columbia River in
the U.S. state of
Washington.
In 1848, a lighthouse was recommended to be located at Cape
Disappointment in what was then the Oregon Territory. An
appropriation of US $53,000 was made in 1852. After the
lighthouse was designed, a first-order Fresnel lens was
ordered. When the lens arrived it was found to be too large for
the tower. Rebuilding the tower took an additional two years.
The first lighthouse in the Pacific Northwest was finally lit on
October 15, 1856. In addition to the light, the station was
equipped with a 1,600-pound bell powered by a striking
mechanism. The keeper's residence was about a quarter-mile
away.
The lighthouse had several shortcomings. The fog bell was
sometimes inaudible due to the roar of ocean waves. It was
discontinued in 1881 and moved to West Point Light in Seattle,
and eventually to Warrior Rock Light near Portland. Also, the
light was not visible to ships approaching from the north. This
problem was corrected by building a lighthouse at North Head,
two miles from Cape Disappointment.
The lighthouse was electrified in 1937. In 1956, the Coast
Guard intended to close the station, but retained the light when
the Columbia River bar pilots protested. The light was
automated in 1973. An observation deck was built for the Coast
Guard to monitor traffic and bar conditions. The grounds are
open to the public through Cape Disappointment State Park.
Everglades National Park protects the southern twenty percent
of the original Everglades in Florida. The park is the largest
tropical wilderness in the United States, and the largest
wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River. An average
of one million people visit the park each year.
Most national parks preserve unique geographic features;
Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a
fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands
and forests fed by a river flowing 0.25 miles per day out of Lake
Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. The park is the most
significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North
America and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the
Western Hemisphere. Thirty-six threatened or protected species
inhabit the park, including the Florida panther, the American
crocodile, and the West Indian manatee.
Everglades is the third-largest national park in the contiguous
United States after Death Valley and Yellowstone.

Pamukkale is Turkey’s leading mineral-bath spa because of its natural splendor. Hot
calcium-laden water flows over a cliff, and as it cools down it forms vivid travertines of hard,
white calcium that form pools. Named the Cotton Fortress in Turkish, it has been a spa since
the Romans built the city of Hierapolis around a sacred warm-water spring.

FIFTY YEARS OF HAIRCUTS AT ROSS PARK CAROUSEL

That's how Todd Fink
describes his experience.
On Tuesday, August 27,
he went for his last haircut
from Lynn Rae at his
barber shop, an Owego
institution. After 57 years
of service to Owego and
the surrounding area,
Lynn Rae has retired.
Todd's parents took him
for his first haircut at the
age of 2, and he's been
a loyal customer of Mr.
Rae's for 50 years.
Lynn spoke fondly of his many
customers...he estimates that
he's had 50-100 'regulars'
over the years. His first shop
was on North Ave, next to the
Community Shop, before
purchasing the building at the
138 Main St. location. His
philosophy is that the real
reason to cut someone's hair is to enhance their looks,
and a good cut accentuates and frames their face.
(Closed in 2018 for restoration)
