Introduction

Electromagnetism as the main theme in the development of systems involving

magnetic and electric fields that have moving charges, these movements are
evaluated by means of waves since it is the means of propagation

In the development of this activity, we will evaluate the intervention of

electromagnetic waves, mathematical models and their applications. Submitting to a
series of exercises proposed by Universidad Nacional A bierta y A distancia – UNAD.

Questions: (write with your own words)

1. What do you mean propagation medium open for electromagnetic

waves?
The instantaneous intensity of an electromagnetic wave, that is, the energy that per
unit of time passes through the surface unit, placed perpendicular to the direction of
propagation is: I = c · eoE2. The average intensity that propagates is just half of the
previous expression.
The intensity of the electromagnetic wave when spread in space decreases with the
square of the distance and as "I" is proportional to E2 and therefore to sen2Q.
Therefore there are preferential propagation directions

2. Within the propagation mediums, what is mean by the tangent of

losses?
The velocity of propagation of a wave is the magnitude that measures the speed at
which the disturbance of the wave propagates along its displacement. The speed at
which the wave propagates depends on both the type of wave and the medium
through which it is propagated
The speed of propagation can be measured as the time necessary for one point of the
space is again a crossing by zero or a maximum of the signal.
3. Of what physical variables does the value of the tangent of losses
depend?

The term e
−jβz indicates wave propagation according to a velocity
of phase vp = ω / β. For this reason, β is called propagation constant.
On the other hand, the factor e
−αz indicates that the wave attenuates as it
propagates, so that α is called the attenuation constant

4. How are the propagation medium classified from the tangent of losses?

5. What are the propagation parameters of the waves through a medium?

With the exception of surface waves in a liquid, the disturbance (be it

a deformation, a pressure or the displacement of a volume) propagates with
a speed that depends on the elastic properties of the medium. These waves
Elastic are also called sound. In vulgar language the sound is
related to auditory sensation, i.e., vibrations in the auditory membrane
caused by an elastic wave that propagates through a gas, a liquid or a
solid. However, our nervous system is only sensitive to frequencies.
between 16 Hz and 20 kHz. Outside these limits the sound is not audible
for humans, although the corresponding elastic waves are followed
calling sound. The physics of frequency elastic waves above 20
kHz is called ultrasonic. The science that deals with generation methods,
Sound propagation and reception is called acoustics.

Application exercises:

1. Calculate the tangent of losses Tan (δ) and the angle of losses δ of the medium
chosen in Table 1, if through it travel an electromagnetic wave E of frequency
f =CCC MHz . Note that CCC are the first 3 digits of your identification number:

σ σ
tan ( δ )= = =¿
ω ε 2 πf ε r ε o
