TEACHING PLAN 2

Health Promotion Teaching Plan

This paper will contain the contents of a teaching plan that is necessary for the
completion of the Health Promotion Teaching Plan Assignment. The paper will be split into
assignment areas to include: introduction, assessment, teaching plan (learning outcomes,
teaching strategies, content outline, and evaluation), and the conclusion.

Assessment

Assessment Data

The population that I have chosen to do my teaching plan on is head start children. The
children are ……. (Make sure to include age, gender, environment, language preference,
learning style, etc) The healthcare topic that I have chosen to teach is ………………. (Make sure
you describe the topic in detail. For instance: mouth care to include tooth brushing, flossing,
tongue hygiene, etc) It is important to understand their prior knowledge on this topic so I can
establish the content in my teaching plan. I will gather previous knowledge by………

Assessment Interpretation

The assessment information reveals………. (Make sure to include Developmental factors

related to the group. Consider both Piaget and Erickson, Teaching principles that are congruent
with the age of the group and the setting, Health promotion needs of the group. Primary,
Secondary, Tertiary Prevention, Actual and potential risk factors making the need for these
teaching appropriate, and anticipated barriers to learning)
Teaching Plan

Learning Outcomes

The learning objectives for the head start children are:

1. After showing the u-tube entitled “Yuck Mouth,” the head start children will be able to
verbalize (cognitive) a.) how many times a day they should brush their teeth.
b.) when they should brush their teeth.
TEACHING PLAN 3

2. After reading the book entitled “Mr. Teeth and Mrs. Floss,” the head start children will
choose (affective) the proper equipment with the mouth part it cleans on the activity sheet.
3. After completion of the teaching session, the head start children will demonstrate
(psychomotor) proper tongue brushing technique on the dinosaur.

Teaching Strategies and Learning Activities

The teaching strategies that I have chosen are based on the age of the children (Preschool)
at the head start. The appropriate teaching/learning strategies of this age is also considered when
choosing activities. According to Piaget the head start children fall into the preoperational stage
which includes: egocentric; thinking is literal and concrete; precausal thinking (McLeod, 2010).
According to Erick Erikson’s stages, the head start child is in initiative vs. guilt which is defined
as taking on tasks for the sake of being involved and on the move; learning to express feelings
through play (Hall, 2012). Some salient characteristics of the preschool age group includes both
cognitive and psychosocial ideas and activities. The cognitive characteristics include; animistic
thinking, limited sense of time, egocentric and transductive reasoning. The psychosocial
characteristics include; separation anxiety, play is his/her work, fears loss of body integrity, active
imagination and interacts with playmates (Roberts & King, 2012). The teaching strategies for the
head start children should include activities that; build trust, allow for manipulation of objects, use
positive reinforcement, encourage questions, provide simple drawings and stories, focus on play
therapy and/or stimulate the senses (Thompson, Carter, Simpson, & Hill, 2016). Normal attention
span by age of children ages 4-6 years old typically can attend to one activity that is of interest to them
for around 12-16 minutes at a time and should generally be able to filter out small distractions occurring
simultaneously in the environment (AAP, 2016).

After reviewing the information listed in the prior paragraph I have chosen to show a u-
tube video for ………. (list all the strategies and activities you would do).

Content Outline

The content outline is a list of the content that will be taught along with the time frame to
complete the activity. The outcome that will be met with each activity will also be addressed.

Evaluation

It is important to evaluate both the teacher and the learner since….. (be sure to include the
following: Describe what you would do to evaluate your teaching. How would you compare the
actual outcome with the learning outcomes? What might you use as evaluation materials?)
