KUALA LUMPUR: Several PKR leaders,
believed to be aligned to party deputy president
Datuk Seri Mohamad Azmin Ali, are
demanding a reconciliation meeting with
president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Its vice-president, Zuraida Kamaruddin, said
the issues to be discussed with Anwar were
“sensitive” and therefore not suitable for
discussions “in a big crowd” at regular
meetings.
“We want to meet Anwar before we resume
attending regular party meetings,” she said after
attending a “plogging” (picking up rubbish
while jogging) event in Pandan Indah
yesterday.
Zuraida said these leaders want to give their
views to set the course for the party to go
forward. “We will attend the regular meetings
again when the direction for the party is clear,”
she said.
Azmin is among those who have skipped
regular party meetings.
Anwar had previously stated that all elected
and appointed leaders could attend the political
bureau meeting every Wednesday and monthly
meetings of the central leadership council.
In response to Anwar’s statement, during an
interview with Bloomberg, that he could
become the nation’s eighth prime minister by
May next year, Zuraida said “we leave it to God
to decide”.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians, suffocating from
the effects of the weeks-long haze, can expect
to see clear skies and breathe clean air before
the end of the week.
Malaysian Meteorological Department
director-general Jailan Simon said the
transition of the southwest monsoon to the
northeast monsoon, which begins today, will
bring thunderstorms and rain across the
country.
“There will be low-speed winds from
various directions and that can cause
thunderstorms,” he said yesterday.
The transition marks the end of the
southwest monsoon that began on May 6. The
northeast monsoon will last until early
November.
Jailan said thunderstorms, heavy rain and
strong wind are expected in the evenings and
nights in the west coast and interior of the
peninsula during this period.
The same weather conditions are expected
in the west coast of Sabah as well as the west
coast and central parts of Sarawak.
The Department of Environment said there
were seven hotspots in Sarawak – three in Sri
Aman and four in Miri – as of yesterday.
According to the National Disaster
Management Agency, peat fires continued to
burn in several parts of Sarawak yesterday.
The army and other agencies have been
engaged in firefighting operations.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement
Agency also carried out water bombing
operations in Sri Aman.
With the expected change in weather, cloud
seeding operations have been halted but will
resume next week if the hazy conditions
persist.

statement, the closure involves 30 schools in
Kuala Langat and 27 in Klang, affecting a total of
68,025 students.
“The closures are being done based on the
API reading at Johan Setia station, which was
above 200 as of 2pm yesterday.
“Therefore, all the schools that are not listed
(as part of the 57) will resume as usual on
Monday,” the statement said.
It said schools in areas affected by the haze
may postpone the Form Three Assessment (PT3)
Listening Test for Malay Language, English and
Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Muasirah until Oct 31.
Schools in districts or areas that were
recording API readings of more than 200 could
postpone the test, it added. However, the test,
which scheduled for three days beginning today,
would still proceed in districts or areas that are
not affected by the haze with strict monitoring by
the state education department, district
education office and schools.
According to the Department of
Environment’s website, as of 11pm yesterday,
the API reading in Kuala Selangor was 178, Shah
Alam (167), Petaling Jaya (162), Klang (152) and
Banting (134).
The API reading between 0 and 50 is
categorised as good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to
200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy) and

Penang offers to help Sumatra fight fires

will be stopped with immediate effect.
In a statement yesterday, Home
Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said
this was decided during a committee
meeting to improve the NRD’s delivery
system on Sept 18.
He said late registrations can only be
carried out at the NRD headquarters in
Putrajaya as a form of check and balance.
Muhyddin added that other
measures were also decided during the
meeting, including increasing the
frequency of spot checks on all NRD
divisions, rotating NRD officers every
two years, and reviewing all birth
certificates that have yet to be claimed.
Unclaimed birth certificates would
be deactivated to prevent any forms of
abuse.
He said NRD had proposed that
DNA information be incorporated into
birth certificates in the future to further
enhance security.
On Sept 12, Penang NRD assistant
director Mohd Faizul Arifin, 34, was
among six individuals charged in court
over 32 charges related to the alleged
illegal issuance and sale of birth
certificates and identity cards to
foreigners.
Faizul together with four men, Loh
Chan Cheong, 34; Chien Guan Chai,
36; Yap Cheng Wah, 43, and Mohd
Faizal Tan Abdullah, 66, were each
charged with two counts under Section
26E of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons

PETALING JAYA: Young people, who are
considered prime contributors to economic
growth, are spending way beyond their means,
and this has brought many of them to the brink of
bankruptcy.
According to the Department of Statistics, this
category – which number about 9.4 million –
makes up about half of the Malaysian workforce.
Yet, many of them are heavily in debt, Bank
Negara’s Credit Counselling and Debt
Management Agency (AKPK) corporate
communications head Mohamad Khalil Jamaldin
told theSun.
He said 13.8% of the 289,936 participants in
AKPK’s debt management programme are aged
20 to 30.
And the fault is mostly their own.
A 2015 survey by Asian Institute of Finance
(AIF) of more than 1,000 young professionals aged
20 to 33 – referred to as Generation Y or “Gen Y” –
showed that many of them rely on high cost
borrowings with 38% having personal loans and
47% having credit card debt.
Worse still, 58% of them had neither the
capability nor knowledge to manage their
finances properly, according to the survey.
The same study also showed that a staggering
70% tended to service only the minimum monthly
payment on their credit cards, and 45% also did
not service their debt on time at some point.

parties should limit children’s use of
electronic devices to avoid damage to
their eyesight, says Malaysia Crime
Prevention Foundation (MCPF) senior
vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
He said global research has
concluded that children should not be
exposed to electronic gadgets, such as
tablets, smartphones and televisions,
more than two hours a week to avoid
serious implications on their eyes.
This means children should only be
allowed to play with such devices for 17
minutes a day.
In March 2017, the Education
Ministry told the Dewan Rakyat that
prolonged use of electronic gadgets
was one of the major contributors to
visual impairment among students.
A report by the ministry revealed
that 6.3% of Year One pupils, 4.1% of
Year Six pupils and 2.7% of Form Three
students had visual impairment in 2017.

‘Iran will seek and destroy any aggressor’

DUBAI: Iran will pursue any aggressor,
even if it carries out a limited attack, and
seek to destroy it, the head of the elite
Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday,
after attacks on Saudi oil sites which
Riyadh and US officials blamed on
Tehran.
“Be careful, a limited aggression will
not remain limited. We will pursue any
aggressor,” the head of the Guards,
Major General Hossein Salami (pix),
said in remarks broadcast on state TV.
“We are after punishment and we will
continue until the full destruction of any
aggressor.”
US President Donald Trump on
Friday approved sending American
troops to bolster Saudi Arabia’s air and
missile defences after the Sept 14
attacks. Iran denies involvement in the
attack, which was claimed by Yemen’s
Houthi movement, a group aligned with
Iran and currently fighting a Saudi-led
alliance in Yemen’s civil war.

Pelosi, who called it his “latest
outrageous attempt” to circumvent
Congress.
“These unacceptable actions are

Police in Teknaf town said the
refugee couple, Dil Mohammad,
32, and his 26-year-old wife
Jaheda Begum, were members
of a Rohingya “bandit group”.
Authorities claim the gang
killed a local ruling party official,
Omar Faruk, in a refugee
settlement in southeastern
Bangladesh last month.
At least 13 Rohingya refugees
have been killed in alleged
gunfights between criminals and
officers since Faruk’s murder on
Aug 22, police inspector Ali
Arshad said.
“Eleven of them were
involved in Faruk’s murder,” he

as an attempt to deny ordinary

chairman); Ibrahim Tuan Man (vice-
chairman); Annuar Musa
Takiyuddin Hassan (secretary-general);

latest rebranding – not reinvention – of
Malay/Muslim politics aiming at
takeover of the government after GE15?
Four years ago when the 1MDB and

for his fellow Malays.
He began his post by noting: Ok,
UMNO is history. In its current flavor,
state and form . . . UMNO is no more. No
point talking about what could have
been . . . or the endeavors of many –
including yours truly – to make the party
see the light, to reform and renew and
remain relevant in contemporary politics,
to cleanse itself of corrupt criminals

Iran – neither military action nor economic sanctions
IT would be utterly immoral of the
United States to launch a military
attack upon Iran if it is true that one of
the missiles that damaged an oil
refinery in Saudi Arabia on Sept 14
had a casing bearing a number that
suggested that the weapon was made
for Nato forces. The alphabets
preceding the number denote the
type of missile it is and one of its uses.
The picture of the missile was
inadvertently supplied to the media
by the Saudi Defence Ministry.
A theory that has emerged in the
wake of the picture of this missile is
that the assault on the oil refineries in
Saudi’s Eastern Province could have
been a false flag attack initiated by
John Bolton who was sacked by US
President Donald Trump as national
security adviser around that time. It
was his way of orchestrating a
“parting shot” which he could then
blame on Iran – a state that he has
always targeted in pursuit of his neo
conservative agenda of emasculating
Israel’s regional adversaries to ensure
the latter’s supremacy and
hegemony.
A false flag attack would exonerate
Iran which has consistently
maintained that it had nothing to do
with the attack on the refineries.
Besides, Iran does not stand to gain in
any way from such action. Its
preoccupation is with getting
crippling sanctions imposed on it by
the US lifted immediately.
A false flag attack would however
raise a question or two about the
Houthi (Ansar Allah) claim that it
destroyed the Saudi refineries.
Indeed, if anyone in the region has a
reason to act against the Saudi
regime, it would be the Houthis and
the people of Yemen in general.
Since 2015 at least 50,000 bombs
and missiles have been dropped in
Yemen by the Saudi military and its
regional allies. More than 15,000
asphyxiating it to a gory demise.
And, possibly with the 1MDB scandal
as the tipping point of his total
disillusionment, he admitted: It was to
no avail. We failed ... and failed
spectacularly as the “parti ...” got
intractably hijacked ... propped by a flaky
collection of self-serving ... and hangers-
on wallowing in the muddy road to self-
destruction ... .
It is significant that despite his lack of
faith and his disenchantment with what
many in his circle regarded as the only
political vehicle capable of leading the
Malays to a better future, he remained
optimistic of the fate of his community.
He reassured his fellow bloggers and
friends in the following terms:
The Malays will do just fine ... once we
rid ourselves of the opiate of false security
offered ... at great socio-economic cost
amid an induced sense of perpetual
vulnerability to looming threats of
imagined pendatang bogeymen lurking
in every nook and cranny of the land.
We must realise the ludicrousness of
the threat of impending doom of the
Orang Melayu ... IF the ... were to lose
power. We must be emancipated from
this culture of irrational fear, of crippling
institutional dependency, of inability to
take charge and be responsible for our
own welfare, our own destiny.
Since that post he has not written
again.
Was his disillusionment as a
nationalistic opinion leader complete as
he helplessly watched Umno’s leaders
circle the wagons and find ways to
absolve the party and its leaders of
children, women and men have died.
Farms, hospitals and schools have
been bombarded.
The daily attacks have spawned
the worst humanitarian crisis in the
21st century. Preventable diseases
such as cholera have spread and
malnutrition and starvation haunt
tens of thousands of families. It has
been estimated that a child dies every
10 minutes in Yemen as a result of all
this.
It is this terrible catastrophe that
the world should address.
False flag attacks divert attention
from the root causes of a catastrophe
ignited by the Saudi and US elites
years ago. Those causes in turn are
related to geopolitics, power and
hegemony. The ordinary Yemeni has
paid a huge price.
If a military assault on Iran is not
going to help the ordinary Yemeni
neither will the tightening of
economic sanctions against the
people of Iran. Already the sanctions
re-imposed upon that country since
the US withdrew from the six-nation
nuclear deal have led to a great deal of
pain and suffering within the
populace. The sick including children
have been deprived of much needed
medicines. Military action and
economic sanctions it is obvious only
exacerbate dire situations. Whenever
it is initiated by a mighty power in
collusion with its allies and agents, it
fails to achieve its objectives. Take US-
helmed military campaigns aimed at
furthering its own often diabolical
agenda. The US attempt to crush what
was in reality a nationalist movement
in Vietnam in the sixties and early
seventies resulted in its own
ignominious defeat.
Under the banner of Nato, it took
control of Afghanistan in October
2001 and in the process ignited a war
of resistance which after 18 years has
undoubtedly enhanced the Taliban’s

to have deepened.
All the activities
pronouncements from the new coalition
and
indicate that the battle lines on which
they will contest GE15 will solely be
focused on the renewed exploitation of
racial and religious sentiment with the
focus of attack on the Democratic Action
Party.
Drawing on the clear electoral
majority of Malay voters – to be
considerably augmented in the next
election by young Malays voting for the
first time. The Election Commission
still in the seat of power, supported by
the Hezbollah, Iran and Russia. Syria
has proven yet again that it is not
possible to accomplish regime
change through military means
orchestrated by external actors.
Economic sanctions however
harsh have also not succeeded in
bringing governments that value their
independence and integrity to their
knees. An outstanding example of a
nation that has withstood US
sanctions and enhanced its
sovereignty is Cuba.
One of those rare occasions when
sanctions have worked is the global
movement against Apartheid South
Africa in the eighties. There was a
universal moral principle underlying
those sanctions that transcended any
self-serving agenda which was one of
the reasons that explained its success.
One can argue that such a principle is
also present in the Boycott, Divest

a conservative Islamic and hardline

Despite Saudi turmoil, new oil shock unlikely

NEW YORK: The past week’s sudden surge in
oil prices brought to mind the nightmare of
shortages, but it’s not too likely motorists will be
queueing to fill up around the world, analysts
say.
All it took was a Sept 14 strike on key oil
infrastructure in Saudi Arabia to abruptly leave
the world’s main supplier producing just half its
normal amount.
That sent the price of Brent crude flying 15%
higher in a single day.
The price on a barrel of crude has come back
down since then and by Friday was trading
around US$65.
Given the slowdown in the global economy
and the abundance of crude produced
worldwide, the prospect of a US$100 barrel, for
now, doesn’t look too likely.
“In essence, the world is far better equipped
to handle oil shocks than it was in the ‘70s,“
explained Harry Tchilinguirian, the head of
commodity research at BNP Paribas.
In 1973, after an embargo by the
Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting
Countries (Opec) against Israel’s allies in the
midst of the Yom Kippur War, and in 1979, after
the Iranian revolution, crude oil prices soared in
just a few months, bringing developed
economies to their knees.
“Currently, an oil shock would hardly have
the same devastating effects” because countries
grew accustomed to such events, economists at
Commerzbank said in a note.
On top of that, “central banks would not react
to a supply shock with massive interest rate
hikes to combat rising inflation,“ they said.
Most importantly, however, economies have
reduced their dependence on oil.
Consumption in the United States, for
example, rose from 17.3 million barrels per day
(mbd) in 1973 to 20.5 mbd in 2018, an increase
of only 18% even as the country’s real gross
domestic product jumped 230%.
In Germany, households spent only 2.6% of
their budget on fuel in 2018.
Many economies have taken strides away
from heavy oil consumption, thanks to transport
and energy-efficient industries, and alternative
sources such as natural gas or renewable energy.
When oil prices held well above US$100 a
barrel between 2011 and 2014, it did not lead to
economic collapse. The world has also now
become less dependent on a few huge
producers.
The first oil crisis led to the creation in 1974 of
the International Energy Agency, which requires
OECD countries to keep in reserve the
equivalent of at least 90 days of their net imports
of crude.
On top of that, oil production has branched
far beyond the Middle East, said Tchilinguirian,
referring to North Sea oil exploited since the
1980s, deep-sea exploitation off the coast of
West Africa and Brazil, and the oil sands of
Canada.
The United States, long deeply dependent
upon imports, has become a major producer
and exporter thanks to shale oil and new
technologies.
Such factors help smooth things out in the
event of a major disruption like the attack on

announced by Finance Minister
Lim Guan Eng, the theme for this
year’s budget is “Shared Prosperity:
Engendering High-Quality Inclusive Growth
Towards High Income Economy”.
Growth across Asia is set to moderate this
year and next year against the backdrop of
slowing global demand and persistent trade
tensions. The Malaysian Institute of Certified
Public Accountants (MICPA) lauds the
government’s intensified efforts to achieve
sustainable high-quality growth for the benefits
of every segment of our society. With this
objective in mind, we highlight below a wish list
for Budget 2020:
A simplified tax system for small businesses
to contribute to the country’s tax base
Small businesses such as hawkers, small
contractors and petty traders often do not have
sufficient resources to maintain complete
books of accounts for tax purposes. A simplified
system of taxation may be considered for small
businesses whereby their income may be
ascertained as a reasonable percentage of their
turnover. Different percentages may be applied
for different types of businesses, based on
statistics compiled by the government in
consultation with business chambers. This
would allow small businesses to significantly
ease their cost of doing business and burden of
tax compliance. At the same time, the country’s
tax base can be quickly broadened by the
participation of small businesses.
For small businesses that decide to maintain
complete books of account for tax purposes,
they should be allowed to do so without
adopting the simplified method of computing
their income so long as they consistently do the
same for future years.
Deduction of financing cost incurred on
purchase of real property for Real Property
Gains Tax (RPGT) purposes
Since Jan 1, 2010, interest paid on loans taken by
a purchaser to acquire a real property is no
longer deductible for RPGT purposes when the
property is sold. For the majority of property
buyers, without financing they would not be
able to buy their properties. In other words, the
interest expense incurred by them is very much
a significant and inevitable cost of acquisition. If
the interest expense is not allowed in
computing their gain liable to RPGT when the
property is sold, the gain is artificially inflated by
the disallowance. This can result in unfair
financial burden given that the RPGT payable if
the property is sold within three years of
ownership is at the rather high rate of 30%.
In order that RPGT is charged on the actual
gain derived from the sale of a property, it is
proposed that the financing cost be allowed in

Encouraging SMEs to scale up through

In 2017, SMEs contributed 37.1% to Malaysia’s

to encourage SMEs to actively grow their
businesses and raise their competitiveness
through strategic acquisitions. In particular,
SMEs need to re-position themselves to seize
opportunities from the digital economy.
A mergers and acquisitions (M&A) scheme
may be introduced under which a SME which
acquires the ordinary shares of another
company within a qualifying sector will be
given an M&A allowance equivalent to 25% of
the value of acquisition subject to a cap of RM10
million for each year of assessment. Double
deduction can also be granted on transaction
costs on qualifying share acquisition, subject to
an expenditure cap. The objective is to spur
SMEs to scale up and actively participate in the

Tax relief for interest incurred by first-time
house buyers
With effect from the year of assessment 2009, a
Malaysian citizen and resident is granted a tax
relief for interest paid on a loan taken to
purchase residential property (limited to only
one unit) provided he has not derived any
income from the property. The relief is up to a
maximum of RM10,000 for each year of
assessment for a period of three consecutive
years and is given only if the agreement for the
purchase was executed on or after March 10,
2009 but not later than Dec 31, 2010.
In order to assist Malaysians to own their
first residential home, we propose that the
interest relief above be re-introduced for first-
time buyers of residential properties priced up
to RM1 million, taking into account the prices
of residential properties in the country’s main
cities. At the same time, measures should be
considered to introduce a higher margin of
financing, longer loan tenure and lower interest
rates for first-time buyers within this category.

Telcos’ revenue outlook weighed Labuan sees tremendous growth

revenue outlook caution for the
National Fiberisation and
Connectivity Plan (NFCP)

who may be leasing TM’s fibre
network at correspondingly
lower rates,” AmInvestment
Bank said in a report.
Under the 11th Malaysia
Plan, gross national income
(GNI) is expected to reach
RM47,720 by 2020. An entry-
level package amounting to 1%
of GNI translates to only
RM40/month. This is half of
TM’s Unifi Basic currently
priced at RM79/month for 60GB
data versus Celcom’s
RM80/month for 30Mbps,
Maxis’ RM89/month for
30Mbps, Time dotCom’s
RM99/month at 100Mbps and
Digi’s RM99/month at 50Mbps.
For further comparison, TM’s
2Q19 Unifi arpu average was
higher at RM177/month.
AmInvestment Bank said
given TM’s role as the national
broadband provider, the group
will likely bear up to half of the
NFCP cost, which translates to
RM2.2 billion over the next five
years. Besides TM’s own capex
requirements, the NFCP rollout
alone translates to 19% of FY20
forecast revenue – already

forecast capex target of 18% and
8% in 1HFY19.
Additionally, the thrust of the
NFCP towards connecting the
rural population could mean
that revenue accretion from
these investments will be
minimal.
“The earnings impact to TM
will snowball as its capex
mounts up to 2025 as higher
borrowing costs and
depreciation charges will
gradually erode the group’s
earnings. Doubling TM’s annual
capex of RM2 billion currently
will slightly cut its net profit by
3% in FY20 but gradually
worsen by 10% in FY21, 19% in
FY22, 30% in FY23, 48% in FY24
and 49% in FY25 under a worst
case scenario. Nevertheless, we
highlight that part of the NFCP
spending may already be
included in TM’s existing capex
programme.”
The research house said
these costs exclude additional
5G spectrum fees and rollout
capex. While 5G standards are
expected to be finalised in April
next year, these trials cover the
usage of the 3.5GHz bandwidth
and 22 millimetre wave lengths.
5G spectrum allocation has not
been determined at this stage as
it depends on the results of the
trials, state of the ecosystem and
device/equipment availability.
“While the Malaysian
Communications and
Multimedia Commission
(MCMC) alluded to a fair price
for the spectrum to facilitate the
rollout of this vastly faster
service, we expect these
additional fees and capex,
which could be up to 10 times

raise the gearing levels of
mobile operators,” it opined.

with the assertion that

Sarawak, Sabah and the
Federal Territory of
Labuan as well as
Brunei and Kalimantan
(Indonesia) should
brace itself for the push
and demand for
growth.
Penang–born Mah
said that the
designated capital is likely to be situated
near Tawau in Sabah so the growth
within the region is expected to be
phenomenon.
In view of this, LFSA, which is the
country’s sole mid-shore banking facility
and regulator, is keen to position itself as
a prime participant in the development
process of a new capital, especially since
it has a unique range of banking
services.
Presently, the population base of
Jakarta is expected to touch 10 million –
making it one of the biggest
cosmopolitan cities in Asia and likely the
biggest in Asean.
Mah said that LFSA has the potential
to become a major financial services
centre as it shares the same time zone
with Asia’s financial hubs – such as
Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Its emphasis on digitalisation and
digital currency in the banking system
was also helping its cause to
compliment the Asian financial hubs.
Presently, some 200 companies
registered in Penang are using the LFSA
to cement its international dealings, said
Mah.
“There is room for more growth. LSFA
is also seeking for talents, including from
Penang to help grow our
potential. Labuan is also a
duty free entreport.”

branch in Labuan.

approved for them to
conduct digital banking
activities in the Labuan

It was reported that a core strategy of
CCB is building a digital financial
ecosystem with the use fintech to
empower customers’ access to their
banking needs.
Since its formation 29 years ago, the
Labuan International Business Financial
Centre is now home to 55 banks, 217
insurers, 61 trust companies and more
than 300 leasing companies as well as
43 commodity trading companies.
Earlier, LFSA hosted an awareness
talk on its role at the Wawasan Open
University (WOU) main campus here.

Bargain hunting in HSI calls continues in bearish market

THE overall warrants turnover for last
week was RM342.3 million, a
decrease of 1.4% from the week prior.
Hang Seng Index (HSI) warrants
remained the biggest contributor,
making up 80.6% of turnover.
Last week, one of the major
developments was the benchmark
interest rate cut by the US Federal
Reserve (Fed) by 0.25% to a range of
1.75% to 2% last Wednesday. This was
the Fed’s second rate cut since July
this year, amid global economic
growth concerns and muted inflation
pressures. A top Fed official signalled
on Friday that further interest rate
cuts could come before year-end.
Hours after the Fed’s quarter
point cut, the Hong Kong Monetary
Authority (HKMA) lowered its
benchmark interest rate by a quarter
point, in line with the Fed’s move, to
2.25% from 2.5%. The HSI entered
into a bearish state as it fell five days
in a row, registering the longest losing
streak in six weeks, as the latest move
added to investors’ worries about the
impact of the continuing violent
protests on the city’s economy. Week
on week, the index plunged 3.4%.
Last week, investors net bought a
total 51.2 million units of call
warrants over the HSI, and net sold
55.3 million units of put warrants
over the HSI. Call warrant HSI-C7F
continued to be investors’ favourite,
taking up the top position in last
week’s warrants space as its traded
value rose 10.6% to RM49.1 million.
Put warrant HSI-H6T came in a close
second, with its traded value
recording at RM49 million. HSI-C7F,
which tracks the movement of its
underlying index, plunged 33.3% on
the week, while HSI-H6T, which
moves in an opposite direction from
5.4% week on week as it closed at
RM1.75 last Friday (+0.6%). Call
warrant FRONTKN-CD became the
most active warrant over Malaysian
counters, with investors trading a
total 17.7 million units; FRONTKN-
CD’s price rose 5.3% on the week.

of the human gut
influences our health for
life, and new research has
shown that it may be crucially
shaped by the way we come into
the world.
A seven-year study published
recently shows babies delivered
by caesarean section have fewer
gut microbes from their mother,
and more bacteria from the
hospital environment, than those
delivered vaginally.
And it also found differences
between the gut environment –
known as the microbiome – of
babies whose mothers received
antibiotics during birth,
compared to those who didn’t.
The authors believe it could
provide evidence that birth is a
defining moment for the human
immune system, which is shaped
by our gut bacteria.
“The hypothesis is that the
moment of birth might be a
thermostatic moment for the
immune system ... which ‘sets’ the
immune system for life,” said
author Nigel Field, a clinical
associate professor at University
College London, at a presentation
of the research recently.
But the researchers caution
that while the findings published
in the journal Nature are “ground-
breaking”, the implications are
unclear.
Differences in the gut bacteria
of newborns evened out by the
time they were weaned, and there
is no definitive evidence yet that
the altered microbiome is tied to
the childhood conditions more
often seen in babies delivered by
caesarean.
Looking at lots of poo
The study examined tens of
thousands of faecal and blood
samples collected from mothers
and babies in Britain.
“There was a lot of poo flying
around,” conceded author Peter
Brocklehurst, professor of
women’s health at the University
of Birmingham.
It examined in more detail than
ever before what kind of bacteria
were in babies’ guts in the early
days of life, with further sampling
weeks and months later.
It found that babies born
naturally acquired bacteria found
in their mother’s guts, but babies
delivered by C-section were
instead colonised by
“opportunistic pathogens” from
hospitals.
These pathogens are not
immediately harmful, but can
cause sickness if the immune
system is weakened, or if the
bacteria moves to other parts of
the body.
The researchers cautioned that
the study was not yet a reason to
alter childbirth practices.
“We are quite keen that we
don’t cause any upset or distress
to women because we don’t know
what the consequences of these
findings are,” said Brocklehurst.
“They could be associated with
long-term outcomes for the baby,
but we don’t know that yet.”
More work to be done
One of the study’s findings
overturns a previous theory about
how a newborn’s gut is colonised
by the mother’s bacteria.
It had been thought that
bacteria from the mother’s vaginal
canal was key to the process, but
examination of the newborn
microbiome showed few of the
bacteria present there were from
the vagina.
So where do the bacteria come
from?
“It may not be a coincidence
that you’re born with your mouth
close to your mother’s anus,” said
Brocklehurst.
“That’s almost certainly where
they pick up those bacteria ... so of
course, if you’re born by
caesarean section, you don’t go
anywhere near that area.”
The authors cautioned the
work is only an initial foray into a
highly complex field, with many
questions remaining, including
the role that antibiotics play in
altering
microbiome.

In Britain, all mothers
delivering by caesarean are given
antibiotics, making it hard to tease
apart the effects due to the
delivery method rather than the
medication.
It is clear that delivery does
play a role, the authors said, as
evidenced by previous research in
countries where antibiotics are
not routine during C-sections.
But further work is needed to
separate out the different impacts.
The authors also want to
examine how home births affect
the microbiome, and to follow a
larger cohort of babies over a
longer period to look for links
between delivery method and
illnesses like asthma and diabetes.
Brocklehurst said that might

HESE days, it’s rare for a TV
to be used for nothing other
than watching TV. From
online TV boxes to streaming
apps, the TV set is already home to a
diverse range of entertainment
platforms – and it’s barely getting
started.
All the latest trends in TV sets were
on display at this year’s IFA consumer
electronics trade fair in Berlin.
While the sales figures for
televisions, satellite receivers and TV
boxes are falling, the range of digital
channels is growing – and the
technology of the sets coming on the
market has improved enormously.
Even better quality
Manufacturers have been saying it for
years, but the picture is actually
getting better and better on modern
televisions.
According to IT association
Bitkom consumer electronics
consultant Sebastian Kloess, picture
improvement is now one of the most
important topics in the industry.
Using machine learning, the
displays are now showing deep black
night skies, bright and clear colours
as well as great contrasts.
“The device knows what signals I
get and how I can use them
optimally,” explains Kloess.
That means that modern 4K
screens can display good-quality
image material, even if it actually has
a lower resolution or was not filmed
with extended colour and contrast

resolution (HDR).

Mourinho is a brilliant pundit.
Perhaps, in retrospect, this
should have been no surprise.
Watching Mourinho in his semi-
regular appearances on Sky Sports this
season, you’re struck by two things.
First, the sheer magnetism of the
oratory.
Mourinho may not be to everyone’s
taste as a manager, but he’s a genuinely
gifted speaker: the tone, the cadence,
the way he pauses for just a second to
string along the viewer when he wants
to make some important, life-affirming
point. It’s the same quality that great
politicians or preachers possess.
But perhaps the biggest revelation
of all is the sheer gulf in understanding.
This is only really apparent when you
set Mourinho alongside someone like

tarnished pride and an ego to match his
own.
And so, who better to restore them
to primacy? Only Jose fits the bill, and
at the sort of club where eyeballs are as
important as trophies, Mourinho’s
broad, pendulous celebrity may just get
