With this PATTERN/PHOTO TUTORIAL you will be able to make an adorable little panda bear
hat with earflaps or without, a perfect gift for a new baby or your little ones photographic shoots!
You can custom make it for a boy or girl. Flower instructions are included.
But, first there are few things that you may need to know before we start:
Abbreviations:
beg = begin
ch= chain
rnd= round
hdc= half double crochet
dc= double crochet
sc= single crochet
sl st= slip stich
Materials:
This pattern is very simple, but I recommend that you read the basic instructions before you start.
This hat are made crocheting in rounds, each round will begin with a number of chains which
will count some times as the first stitch, and is ended by joining the last stitch with the top of the
beginning chain creating concentric circles –slip stitch.
The photo tutorial shows how to make the 3-6 months size. If you are making a size other than
6-12 months you can still follow the same instructions… the variations are explained at the end
of this pattern base on every size
These are equivalent crochet terms and abbreviations. Only the names differ, the stitches
themselves are identical.
Round 3. Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first st, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in the following stitch. Repeat
from * to last st. sl st in top of first st to join. (24 sts)
Round 4. Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first st, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat
from * to last st. sl st in top of first st to join. (32 sts)
Round 5. Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first st, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat
from * to last st. sl st in top of first st to join. (40 sts)
Round 6. Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first st, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. Repeat
from * to last st. sl st in top of first st to join. (48 sts)
Round 7. Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first st, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts. Repeat
from * to last st. sl st in top of first st to join. (56 sts)
Round 8. Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st. sl st in top of first st to join. (56 sts)
Round 9-21. Repeat Round 8. Make sure you end every round having 56 sts.
Round 22. Attach your black yarn. Ch 1, sc in each st. sl st in top of first st to join. (56 sts)
RIGHT EARFLAP
Before you start the earflaps I want to tell you that you will be using the following st:
“Sc next 2 sts tog” Every time your pattern call for this stitch you are going to insert hook
in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook, Figure 1), insert hook in next
stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops
on hook (Figure 2)—1 stitch decreased (Figure 3).
LEFT EARFLAP
EDGE
The edge of the hat is very simple… you will Ch 1, and sc in each st around. At the end of the
earflap you will want to make 4 sts, this is with the purpose of giving the edge of the earflap a
round shape. sl st in top of first st join. Fasten off leaving a small tail of yarn that you will
weave between stitches to secure the end.
Use your finger to shape the hat, lay the hat in a flat surface and compare to the picture above.
If your hat has a weird shape… recount your stitches base on the size of the hat that you are
making, count your rounds, check your gauge. If you are using a bulky type of yarn take in
count that your gauge will be different affecting the size of the hat.
EARS
Make two
Round 1. Using white yarn. Ch 4 (count as first dc), work 14 dc in first ch. Sl st in top of ch-3
to join. Fasten off. (15 st)
Round 2. Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st in top of first sc. (15 sc) ) Fasten off.
Round 3. Attach your white yarn. Ch 1, sc in each st. sl st in ch-2 to join. (15 sc) Fasten off
leaving 8" tail to sew ear on.
NOSE
Start by working a loop using one string of your cotton yarn. Ch 3.
Round 1. Work 10 hdc in first chain. sl st on top of first st join. (10 sts) Fasten off and
leave a tail long enough to later sew the nose to the hat.
Round 2. Ch 1, work 2 sc on each of next 2 sts, hdc and dc in next st, 2 dc in each of the next 4
st. dc and hdc in next st, sc in each of the last sts. sl st on top of first st to join. (20 sts) Fasten
off and leave a tail long enough to later sew the eyes to the hat.
.
FLOWER
Star by working 2 ch using your pink yarn.
Round 1.- Ch 1. work 5 sc in first chain. Sl st in top of first sc.
Round 2.- * Ch 4, 3 dc in same st, 3 ch and sl st in same base sc. Sl st in to next st and repeat
from * to make 4 more petals. Fasten off weave and secure ends.
BRAIDS
Cut 24 pieces - 38” lengths of yarn and divide into 2 groups of 12 ( 4 of each color). Fold one
bunch of 12 in half and push the folded end through the bottom space of the earflap. Pull the two
ends, each of 12 strands, through the folded loop and pull up neatly, keeping the two ends the
same length. Braid these 24 strands gently and tie an overhand knot near the end to stop the
braid from unraveling.
