1.What is the primary reason of the author in writing the document? How was it produced?

The document was all about the expedition of Magellan and his colleagues through the
chronicle of Pigafetta, the author of the document. The primary reason of the author in writing
such document is to record and have documentation with regards to what they had experienced
and discovered along their journey to different places. These includes memorable people, dates,
events and even cultures and traditions of different tribes they had met along their way. It was like
a diary of their journey, a written travelogue to be exact. It was produced through narrative writing
then publicizing it. He wrote everything on his journal leaving a record of their circumnavigation
which now contributed a lot for it is considered as one of the most important documentary evidence
relating the geographical discoveries of the Sixteenth Century.
2.What is the main theme in the document? Explain briefly.
We must explore to discover beautiful things. A well spent journey that leads to discovery
will always be worth it. Explore, discover and most importantly, make an evidence. They say an
event without evidence doesn’t occur/exist at all. So, as much as possible. Leave footprints, it
might help someone in the future.
3.What specific information of importance is provided in the text? Explain its importance to
the understanding of Philippine history.
After reading the document, we have realized the importance of it to further understand
Philippine history. How our ancestors have lived in the past. How their system of governance
works, what are their customs, values, traditions, practices and beliefs before the colonizers came.
Our ancestors before follow the monarchy system where a Datu or a King rules over his tribe to
create a more organized and peaceful society. He will represent the tribe for he is capable and
knowledgeable enough in doing so. It was also mentioned in the document of how the author
together with his troops made friends with the ancient Filipinos, traded some products and foods
as a sign of friendship and alliance. We can conclude that it’s in the nature of Filipinos to be
hospitable and trusts easily. Reflectively, we, Filipinos are really fond of collecting things that are
new to our eyes, we tend to love and adore materials and things made by other countries than of
ours. As of now, we can really say that we have accustomed to what our colonizers have thought
us. We can’t deny the fact that we are influenced by them, a lot. Sad but that’s reality. It’s never
too late though, it will always be up to you if you’ll going to go with the flow or resist it and take
action. The choice is yours to make.
4.What light does it shed on people, their politics and economy, religion and cultural
practices? Analyze the text.
The document was not just all about an expedition to expand territories, spread christianity
and discover islands to name after them but most inportantly it is a recorded circumnavigation
which gives an extraordinary record of traditions, customs and cultural and linguistic features of
populations all over the world that were unknown until that moment.
5.What is your personal evaluation on the impact of the document in the understanding of
the 16th century people and their culture in the islands?
The 16th century people shows how they live in the simple way, how they love their culture, how
they show their values, how they give courtesy to each other in the island. It gives an impact to us.
As a Filipino, we follows/shows the real Filipinos, therefore we must give the importance of our
cultures and we must prolong or continue of what our ancient does.

What I have realized with regards to the understanding of the 16th century people specifically the
ancient Filipinos is that this document made it clear for us to know of how our ancestors have lived
in the past. Their system of governance in which they are ruled by a Datu or a king who is
knowledgeable and competent enough to lead and represent their tribe. It was also written there
the traditions and cultures of our ancestors in the past, how good they were at drinking wine or
tuba, how they traded goods to foreign people as a sign of friendship, how they dress and how
hospitable they were when there are visitors which are still evident these days. Reflectively, despite
the fact that we are colonized by many powerful countries for a long period of time before, the true
value and identity of being a Filipino will always prevail.

The journal of Pigaffeta brings a great impact especially to the Spaniards. Through his journal it
gives them the idea to conquest east countries particularly Philippines for it stated in his journal
that our country is abundant of gold and spices that is scarce in their country. By this it will be
their edge to be the highest and powerful among all the European country. The expansion of their
Roman Empire will be easy to them through the help of Pigaffeta's Journal. Also, Pigaffeta's
Journal plays a big role in Philippine History. Towards his documentation it helps to the historian
of the Philippine to trace the events on the past especially when and how Magellan arrived in the
Philippine. And how Catholicism invade the Philippines. This written evidence is very essential to
each and every one of us to be informed and educate of what we are in the past, of what Filipinos
during Magellan entered the Philippines. And also, through this written evidence it tells that how
wealthy Filipino are but until now we are still in the process of progressing.

My personal evaluation on the impact of this document in the understanding of the 16th century
people and their culture in the islands is to treasure the importance and value of the Philippine
history .The documents helps me understand how important to respect different people along the
way .It helps me to know , that despite in their different cultures that they had ,they stand up for
what they believe and respect each other .it was also stated in the document that how rich and
abundant they have. They exchange their goods and give others for what they had. People in this
century known as the friendly and willingly showed their different islands openly.
-RIZA PUN-AN
Within the context I have read, I learned the culture of the 16th century people. Trade was
existed on that time in which people who navigate in different islands, they give what they have
as an exchange to the resources from the group of people in the island they traveled. They do this
because they need provisions to their everyday expedition in the world.
