2. Designing your question pages

2.1. Managing the question pages

The number of question pages in a questionnaire is unlimited, and you can structure the
length to best suit your project’s needs. You may change the order of individual pages in
your questionnaire by dragging them.

Each question page consists of three tabs, with the initial view opening to the editing
tab, ( ) and possibilities to choose the settings ( ) or the delete ( ) tabs.

your page with the title you wish it to have or
leave it unnamed.

Copying pages
Copy pages from your existing questionnaires
by choosing the copy an existing page button. If
you copy the same page several times into your
questionnaire, remember that all question
elements need to be named uniquely.

Removing pages
You can delete unnecessary pages by choosing
the delete tab and confirming the action.
Deleting a page will remove all the elements you
have created for that page.

Tip: When designing your questionnaire, you’ll be able to check in on its preview at
any point by clicking the ‘open questionnaire’ button at the upper left corner of the
questionnaire editing view. The preview of the questionnaire will open in a new tab
of your browser. Refresh this page to see the changes made in the editing view.

2.2. Questionnaire elements on question pages
Elements are the building blocks of your question pages. You may use them to gather or
relay information and to structure the questionnaire with supporting text or pictures. Like
separate question pages, also individual elements have their own properties bar with tabs
for the general settings ( ) and for editing ( ), deleting ( ) and copying ( ) their
content.

Adding and removing elements

Add new elements with the add content button
( ) in the page’s editing view. The amount of
elements on one page is not limited, but
consider dividing long pages in order to better
structure your questionnaire. You can modify
the order of elements in one page or between
pages by dragging them.

You may remove any elements by clicking them

and choosing the Delete tab.

Copying elements
Duplicate any element by choosing the Copy tab
in the elements properties. The duplicated
element will appear on the same page
underneath the copied element.

Remember to name your new element

individually, as all the question elements need
to be identified by distinct names (paragraphs
of text can be identical).

10
2.3. Element options on question pages

Drawbutton
When you want your respondents to point,
locate or describe places, areas or routes
on a map, add a drawbutton element on
the page. Choose between point, line or

you wish your respondents to locate.

2.4. Additional settings for questionnaire elements

Detach answers from other data

If you wish to detach the answers of one
question element from the other data of the
questionnaire, tick the Disconnect answer from
other data box in the question element’s
settings tab. This feature enables you to collect
data on the respondents’ identity (for example
for a raffle or a mailing list) while preserving
their anonymity regarding other responses.

Obligatory questions

You can define all the interactive question

elements as obligatory to answer by choosing
the Prevent changing page until answered box
in the element’s settings tab. As suggested by
the name, this option does not allow moving
forward in the questionnaire before questions in
the element have been answered to.

Consider carefully when it is necessary to use

this feature – respondents might find it
distracting on questions they are not able or
prepared to answer. Do not set questions within
drawbuttons to be obligatory, as the obligatory
elements are only shown within drawbuttons.
Note that also the multiple choice grids cannot
be set to be obligatory.

3. Language settings
Learn here how to manage the language settings and translations of individual
questionnaires. If you wish to change the language of your user interface, click here.

Take a first look at how questionnaire translations are managed in a short User Guide clip.

Default language
Every questionnaire has a default language for
the management of the questionnaire. The
default language will be the language you chose
while creating the questionnaire. It is
recommended not to change the default
language, as this will affect the questionnaire’s
structure and how the responses are saved in
Maptionnaire.

Manage translations
You can translate your questionnaire into any of
the languages listed under Language settings.
These are the language options supported by
the questionnaire’s user interface. Make sure to
translate all the questions and texts you have
produced in order to complete the translation.

You are able to manage and modify your

translations in the Translate menu. All the
languages selected from the list will be shown
with their individual translation templates.

4. Spatial settings
The base map options in Maptionnaire are highly customizable, and support for example
maps published in WMS-servers. Maptionnaire collaborates with all the major web based
map providers, such as MapBox, Bing and Google Maps.

Choose a base map from our collection of default maps or upload your own map or picture
to be the template of your questionnaire. Note that the map options work currently only in
online mode. Get started by checking out a User Guide clip on base map options in
Maptionnaire.

4.1. Setting up a default base map

Define the location and scale of your base map in the Questionnaire Editor under the
heading Location at the beginning. This base map serves as the template for all of your
questionnaire pages. If you wish to customize the base maps of individual questionnaire
pages, move to their settings tabs or learn how to create a map jump with a multiple choice
question.

23
Locate your base map and
choose its scale
Drag the base map in the window of the
Questionnaire Editor to the location of your
choosing. Set in a zoom level in the zoom level
box of the map window - the right level depends
on the scale of your questionnaire. Good values
are often found in integers from 8 to 14, but
you’ll find the right one by experimenting a bit.

Check the scale and location by entering the

questionnaire preview from the upper left
corner of the editing page and adjust if needed.

Choose your base map

Explore the collection of default base maps and
choose one or several that best serve your
project’s needs. Consider especially the scale
and generalization varying between these maps
- what features do you need your respondents
to be able to locate?

You can change the default base map under the

heading Maps in the Questionnaire Editor. If you
don’t change it, the default base map will stay
as the pre-set MapBox base map.

As you see, you may choose several map

simultaneously as long as they are set in the
same coordinate system. Choose several base
maps, and your respondents will have the
possibility to pick the base map they wish to use.

4.2. Setting up your own base map
Sometimes setting up your own base map or template is what your project needs. You can
bring your own base map data to Maptionnaire straight in the Questionnaire Editor in
raster (image files such as .jpg, .png or georeferenced Geo TIFF -files) or vector form
(shapefiles). You may also import map templates from other online servers.

If you wish to customize the base maps of individual questionnaire pages, move to the
settings tab of individual question pages.

Managing personal maps

After being uploaded on Maptionnaire, all
your own map data will be shown in the list of
default maps in the Questionnaire Editor and
in the listing of map data in the Management
of maps menu under the Maps header.

Once uploaded, your data will be available for

use in all of your questionnaires. You can
delete your maps in the Management of maps
menu by choosing the delete button. Once
deleted, the map will be deleted from all of
your questionnaires.

use Maptionnaire’s default coordinate
systems if you wish to use your WMS map
together with the default base maps.

Overlays and transparency

If you wish to set your map to appear over
another base map, select overlay or mutually
exclusive overlay. Choosing the latter means
that the layer is visible only by itself, not in
combination with other overlays. Select

Uploading images as maps
You may upload images in basic image formats
(.jpg, .png etc.) by choosing create new in the
Management of maps menu. From the popup
menu choose normal image file. Give your map
a name and find it with the browse option. If you
are using a satellite or aerial picture, mark the
adjoined box.

Remember that basic image file formats are not

georeferenced, and cannot be bound to any
geographical coordinate system.

Uploading a georeferenced
raster image (Geo TIFF)
You may upload georeferenced raster images in
Geo TIFF format from the Management of maps
menu by choosing georeferenced raster image
from the create a new map popup menu.

Upload your map and name it. If you wish to

support your Geo TIFF file with an optional
World file (.tfw) you may add it here – make sure
to use one if your image is in any other
coordinate system than those supported by
Maptionnaire. You can see these default
systems in the dropdown list under Coordinate
Reference System. If you are using also a base
map, remember to set the image to the same
coordinate reference system.

29
You can also choose to set your Geo TIFF image
as a mutually exclusive overlay, but do this only
to images with no transparency. If your Geo TIFF
is transparent, don’t click on Is a photograph as
this will change the picture to a non-transparent
format.

Tip: You may create a Geo TIFF file from a

raster image with the Georeferencer plugin
available for QGIS.

Uploading vector data

(Shapefile)
You may upload vector data by opening the
Management of maps menu under Maps, and
choosing create a new shapefile. Maptionnaire
supports currently only vector data in the
shapefile form (.shp). Be sure to set your data to
the currently supported EPSG:4326 coordinate
system.

Shapefiles cannot have popups. If you have a
