Moral Analysis of Eye in the Sky (2015)

.
1) In the scene where Lieutenant General Benson argued with the Colonel Powell about

the estimated collateral damage to the area of effectivity of the hellfire missile, he portrayed

utilitarian moral principle when he insisted to engage the weapon to kill the suicide bombers and

the innocent child who sells bread near the area of effectivity, knowing that the lives of 80 people

are at stake if they would not do it immediately. Lieutenant General Benson has made the people

in the room realize that their decisions should be measured in terms of the pleasure or satisfaction

it would produce in the end. He imposed that a good consequence defines a good decision.

2) The character who portrayed natural law or Kantian (deontological) moral principle is

Angela Northman. It is justified in her conversation with James Willett when she was asked the

question “And you would save her and risk killing 80 others?” she replied “Yes, I would save her

and take that risk.” The situation in this scene was, they already know that there is a 65-75% chance

of fatal injury to 80 people if the bomb vests are detonated in the urban area while only one

innocent child gets to be saved. Angela Northman had shown in her character to believe that a

morally good action arises from good will and a morally good action defines a good decision.

3) The decision of firing the hellfire missiles to the target location was morally justifiable.

In my own viewpoint, it is unnecessary to save only 1 life by risking the lives of 80 others because

in the worst case scenario, we would end up losing greater number of lives. In the movie, they

were successful in killing the target in exchange to this was innocent civilians ended up being

injured and killed in the collateral damage of the explosion. The most pertinent moral theory in

the movie is Utilitarianism because the satisfaction of many people was fulfilled when they fired

up the hellfire missile destroy the whole house, killing the suicide bombers, including the innocent

civilians near the area of effectivity.
