Vocabulary
Idioms/meaning/context clues
1. Money Talks- you mean that people with a lot of money have power and influence.
2.Passion- to have a strong feeling of need or desire for someone, something, or some
activity.

3.Diversity- the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc.
4.Bashing- The act of criticizing or slandering someone or something.
5.Stand on your own feet- to be able to provide all of the things you need for living
without help from anyone else.

6.Swept everyone of the feet- to sweep someone off their feet. phrase [VERB
inflects] If someone sweeps you off your feet.

7.Let the cat out of the bag- you reveal something secret or private, often
without meaning to.

8.Green with envy- Full of desire for someone's possessions or advantages; extremely
covetous.

9.Driving me up- To drive to a place that is north of one's current location.


10.Down in the dumps- down in the mouth. Discouraged, depressed, or sad.
11.Walking an eggshells- To be overly careful in dealing with a person or situation
because they get angry or offended very easily.

12.The best of both world’s- C1 a situation in which you can enjoy the advantages
oftwo very different things at the same time.

13.Indigenous- abandon their own culture, customs, or way of life and adopt those of the
country or region they are living in.

14.Ostracizing- to exclude, by general consent, from society, friendship, conversation,


privileges, etc.

15.Serenety- Use serenity to mean the quality or state of being calm and peaceful.
Language and Grammar
1.Conjunctions- a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in
the same clause (e.g. and, but, if ).

2.Parallel- side by side and having the same distance continuously between them.

3.Faulty Parallelism- Faulty parallelism is a construction in which two or more parts of a


sentence are equivalent in meaningbut not grammatically similar in form.

4.Adverb- a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a
word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc.

5.Cohesive Devices- Cohesive devices are words used to show how the different parts
of a text fit together.

6.Pronoun- a word that can function by itself as a noun phrase and that refers either to the
participants in the discourse (e.g., I, you ) or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in
the discourse (e.g., she, it, this ).

7.FANBOYS- the mnemonic acronym FANBOYS can be used to remember the coordinators
for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.

8.Correlative Conjuction- A correlative conjunction is a type of conjunctionthat


functions in a pair, with both words working together to balance words, phrases, or clauses.

9.Subordinate Conjuntions- a conjunction that introduces a subordinate clause,


e.g., although, because.

10.Gerund Phrase- A gerund phrase is a phrase consisting of a gerund and any


modifiers or objects associated with it.

11.Infinitive Phrase- An infinitive phrase is a group of words that uses an infinitive (“to”
+ verb).

12.Transitional- In English grammar, a transition is a connection (a word, phrase,


clause, sentence, or entire paragraph) between two parts of a piece of writing, contributing to
cohesion.Transitional devices include pronouns, repetition, and transitional expressions.
