ABB has developed a new generation of high voltage switchgears
for Railway applications.

HV substation primary equipments are based on hybrid bus bar (hybrid technology). This combination of gas-
modules for 16,7 Hz, which come from 50-Hz-Module insulating technology with air-insulating bus bar leads

specification. characteristic of the PASS-Systems is the modular
building method, which makes it possible to summarize

way. The PASS M0-16,7 Hz described here is the 2-phases
variant for 123-145 kV/16,7 Hz, developed for traction
PASS concept differs from pure gas-insulating use, it is available in single bus bar but also double bus
switchgears (GIS) due to the connection to air insulating bar variant.

The PASS-M0 Circuit Breaker (Q0)

is based on auto-puffer, self-blasting
switching principle, well proven being
same components used also in other
ABB circuit-breakers model.
Motor drive MD 300 is used as circuit-
breaker drive. This completely new
drive consists of a servo actuator and
electronic control, which take over
the supply and control the motor.
The driving power needed is stored
in a bank of capacitors. The control
supervises position and switching speed
of the drive system, during opening and
closing of the circuit-breaker, through
motor rotation position signals control.

PASS M0 combined disconnector and

earthing switch (Q1+Q82) is moved by a
common motor drive.
With this patented principle turning just
one contact all disconnecting and earthing
positions are realized. By assembly of a second
disconnecting switch on the same axle a
combination for double bus bar is available.

4
PASS M0 Fast Earthing Switch (Q81) is also
available. It consists of two separate poles driven
by mechanical drive. Energy needed for fast
closing operation of earthing switch is stored in
two springs.
PASS M0 FES can carry out two closing operations
at 40 kA - 100kA peak, without any reduction of
insulation level

PASS-M0-Current transformers (T1) are cast

resin insulated and are mounted externally on the
bushings.

PASS-M0-Voltage transformers (T5) are inductive

and gas-isolated, they are accommodated in a
separate gas compartment, flanged on to the
module.
In order to meet the requirements to be fast
erected, avoiding dismantling of the modular
device on site, the instrument transform ers are
implemented in such a way that they do not have
to be dismantled for transport.

PASS modules are connected by SF6-air-bushings with sheds are vulcanized and form together only one component,
overhead lines and bus bars. so that no humidity can penetrate into the layer between the
PASS M0-Bushings consist of a cylinder of glass-fiber two materials. Silicone sheds are water-rejecting and assure
reinforced with epoxy resin, on which the silicone rubber protection from contamination.
