USING EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE FOR TEACHING AND
LEARNING

Educational software is a term used for any computer software which is made for any
educational purpose. It encompasses different ranges from language learnig software to
reference software, atec. The purpose of all this software is to make some part of education
more effective and efficient (Wikipedia). The term “Educational Software” is used to refer to
software designed to support learning (Lyras : 2014). Education software is computer
software with the primary purpose of teaching or self-learning. Using computer software and
hardware in education and training goes back to the early 40s, when American researchers
were able to develop flight simulators that used analog computers for generating simulated
onboard instrument data.

More and more educational software organizations, both online and offline are
coming up to help fill a need for more personalized, interactive educational experiences for
students and teachers alike. There are numerous benefits to these systems and, most
importantly, education software is a cost-efficient solution for educational organizations that
want to manage information and data regarding their students in an organized way. The
following metaphors are chosen as they represent major theoretical perspectives and software
developments in educational multimedia :

1. Software as a tool
2. Software as an instructor
3. Graphic Software
4. References software

These days, education software constituents of the identity of a school as they could
deliver all the associated tasks. Software at present even provides the facility and access to
parents for a bird’s view of the progress of their children in the classroom.

1. SOFTWARE AS A TOOL
There are many types of software and they are produced and used for a purpose. In
education, the most versatile function of software is instrumental. It is used for
performing a certain function such as calculating, drawing, editing, proofreading,
communicating, etc. Word processing is the most widely used software in education.
Students use them to write assignments, produce documents, and communicate with
others. For example, word processing software can perform many complex functions,
such as text editing, statistical analysis, communication and design. Apart from the
versatile software programs for general purposes such as WORD, EXCEL, ACCESS,
PowerPoint and Publisher, some software programs are designed for specific purposes
such as SPSS, STRATA and SAS for statistical data analysis, NVivo and Atlas-TI for
qualitative data analysis, and EndNote for referencing.

2. SOFTWARE AS AN INSTRUCTOR
This metaphor represents the instructionist view of teaching and learning. When
software is used as an instructor, its primary role is to teach learners to develop
knowledge and skills. Drill-and-practice is a common feature of instructional software
as it reflects strongly the Initial-Response-Evaluation (IRE) model, teachers could
include drill and practice software for strengthening the current skill set of students.
This software is beneficial when teachers prepare students for tests and exams. Which
consists of three sequential stages :
a. Initial stage: Instructors introduce the content in terms of definition, description
and explanation.
b. Response stage: After having been exposed to instructions, learners are expected
to gain knowledge or skills and know how to translate new knowledge or skills
into practice
c. Evaluation: Teachers evaluate learning through responses given by learners.

3. GRAPHIC SOFTWARE
Students could use graphic software for capturing, creating, and changing images that
are available on the web, on the program itself, or online images available. It is
particularly useful for building online presentations. Example : Adobe Potoshop,
Corel Draw.

4. REFERENCES SOFTWARE
Teachers could include reference software in research projects. Reference software
allows students access thesaurus, encyclopedia, atlases, and dictionaries.
Benefits Of Educational Software
Educational software integrates multimedia content and provides users a high
interactivity level. With countless online resources, technology can help improve teaching.
Teachers can use different apps or trusted online resources to enhance the traditional ways of
teaching and to keep students more engaged. Virtual lesson plans, grading software and
online assessments can help teachers save a lot time. This valuable time can be used for
working with students who are struggling. What is more, having virtual learning
environments in schools enhances collaboration and knowledge sharing between teachers.
Finally, it also promotes a productive learning environment.
CONCLUSION

The use of software in education can make personal interest for students. Because in
this era full of technology, students and teachers must be able to use the best technology
possible. Using software also becomes more fun and efficient. Software can help encourage
active participation in the class which is also a very important factor for increasing
knowledge retention. In addition, technology can also develop students 'learning interest and
students' curiosity. Software education can also save school time, effort, and resources. and
moreover, software can be used in every subject.
