CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Safety is everyone concern but one of the most risk in the roads that has

been observed in streets and highways are the motorcycles. A majority of riders

are not aware that riding without side mirrors is a violation of traffic rules that’s

why having a side mirror in all motorcycle is some of the safety technique to

avoid accidents. Besides having a side mirror in motorcycle is not only to ensure

traffic discipline but also to reduce fatal accidents. It has been observed that the

most motorcycles plying the streets and highway of the city are not fitted with

side mirrors. Side mirror allows you to look behind you by moving just your eyes

(Grace Belostrino 2009 Land Transportation Office Traffic Associate Instructor).

A pair of side mirror will help you not accidentally swerving into the traffic

coming up behind you're trying to get a look at. You can almost look behind you

and in front of you at the same time because it just takes a small eye movement

rather than a huge head movement to go from looking ahead to looking behind

and back. The only advantage of a mirror is that you don't have to move your

head as much to see what's behind you. You still have to scan your head around a

little to "sweep" the scene behind you and you still have to take your attention

momentarily away from what is in front of you (Ray Mark Pacaldo 2015).

Motorcycle side mirrors are available to improve visibility and enhance safety for

motorcycle riders. When you consider that approximately 80 percent of

motorcycle accidents cause injury or death, you realize the importance of

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature by the researchers for the

better understanding of the study and also the conceptual framework and

definition of terms.

City Ordinance 821 is an ordinance prescribing the mandatory use/

installation of side mirror to all motorcycles, tricycles and other similar vehicles

plying the streets and highways of Puerto Princesa City.

The number of fatalities in motorcycle-related accidents has been

increasing and is the highest for the past Five Years, according to a motorcycle

safety group.

In Metro Manila alone, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants

Association (MDPPA) has recorded an average of 66 accidents daily, with almost

half of total number of accident victims losing their lives. In 2015 alone, 37

percent of the accidents ended up fatal, higher than the 35 percent recorded in

2014.

This is the highest in the past Five Years, MDPPA said. The total number

of motorcycle-related accidents, however, slightly decreased from 24,110 in 2014

to 23,949 last year. The group sourced its data from the Metropolitan Manila

Development Authority’s (MMDA) Metro Manila Accident Recording and

Analysis System Database.

MDPPA vice-chairman Magnus Mateo said it is alarming that motorcycle

accidents have become more deadly despite fewer accidents recorded last year.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter consists’ the discussion of research design used, the

respondents in the study, the research locale, sampling procedure,

instrumentations, data collection procedure and procedure for data analysis.

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted at Robinson’s Parking Area located at national

highway, Barangay San Manuel, Puerto Princesa City. Robinson’s place Palawan

is a shopping mall owned and operated by Robinsons malls, the second largest

mall operator in the Philippines. It is the 31st in the Robinsons mall chain and

the first largest full service mall in the province of Palawan. The 16-hectare mall

houses a 300-seat food court, Al fresco dining outlets, fashion boutiques,

especialty shops, banks, an amusement centre, service outlets and cell phone and

gadget shops. It is located 5 kilometres North of Puerto Princesa City proper

along the North National Highway (www.robinsonsmalls.com_palawan.php,

September 15, 2012).

CHAPTER IV

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the findings, analysis and interpretation of the data

on the awareness of the motorist in the implementation of the side mirrors

installation to all motorcycle (City Ordinance 821) in Puerto Princesa City.

Demographic characteristics of the respondents

Table 1a shows the frequency distribution of the demographic profile of

the respondents in term of age, sex, educational attainment, civil status, ethnic

affiliation, and types of driver’s license.

In terms of age, most or 37 (24.7%) of the respondents are within 27 to 31

years old, 27 or (18.0%) of the respondents are within 22 to 26 years old, 22 or

(14.7.0%) of the respondents are within 32 to 36-year-old, 12 or (8%) of the

respondents are within of 17 to 21 18 or (12%) of the respondent are 17 to 21 years

old, 14 or (9.3%) are within 47 to 51 years old, 12 or (8%) are within 37 to 41 years

old and 42 to 46-year-old and finally 8 or (5.3%) are from 52 to 56 years old. It

implies that respondents are already in their legal age and mature enough to

understand the awareness of the motorist in the implementation of the side

mirrors installation to all motorcycle (City Ordinance 821) not only as a notice

but they need in their daily lives.

In terms of sex, majority 124 or (82.7%) are male and 26 or (17.3%) are

female. It reveals that male dominated the female respondents. It implies that

more male are aware about the city ordinance 821 than female respondents.
CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, conclusions and recommendation of

the study.

Summary

This study was conducted to determine the level of awareness of the

motorists in the implementation of the side mirrors installation to all motorcycles

(City Ordinance 821) Descriptive method was employed to gather information

about the study. A total of 150 respondents were engaged through convenient

sampling. A questionnaire was used and Frequency counts, Percentage, means

and Pearson Moment Correlation test (Pearson-r) were used to interpret data.

Result revealed that most 37 or (24.7%) of the respondents 27to 31 years

old 27 or (18%) are 22 to 26 years old, 22 or (14.7 %) are within 36 to 36 years

old, 18 or (12%) are 17 to 21 years old, 14 or (9.3%) are 47 to 51 years old,12 or

(8%) are both 37 to 41 years old and 42 to 46 years old and lastly 8 or (5.3%) are

52 to 56 years old.

As to gender, majority 124 or (82.7%) are male and 26 or (17.3%)

are female. In terms of educational attainment, most 66 or (44%) are college

level, 62 or (41.3%) are high school graduate, 14 or (9.3%)are college graduate, 6

or ( 4.0%) are high school level, and 2 or ( 1.3%) are elementary graduate.
