‘The Rain’ is a deeply symbolic poem in which upper leaves of tree represent the upper and
affluent class and the lower leaves represent the poor of the society. The sunshine symbolizes the
day when the darkness of poverty will come to an end and there will be a fair distribution of
blessings of nature.
Summary
The poem “The Rain” has been written by W.H.Davies. In this short poem the poet describes a
reality of life through illustrating a serene view of rain. He says that he hears the leaves drinking
rain. The leaves on top are full of water of rain. The upper leaves, after quenching their thirst,
pass on the drops to the lower leaves. It means that the rich people should help the poor. The
poet says the sun will come out after raining and will brighten up each rain drop. It will be a
lovely sight. The poet means to say that there would be equality in the society just like the
sunshine which spreads all over the world equally. This poem has symbolic meanings and a
beautiful message for rich people.

growing thin; therefore poor. The rain is falling in heavy showers on the top rich leaves.
But the rain water is falling drop after drop on the lower thin leaves. It looks as the rich
people give alms coin after coin to the poor. However, the music produced by the falling
rain on the leaves is soft and sweet.

will indeed be a lovely sight.

Transitive Verb
A transitive verb is one that is used with an object: a noun, phrase, or pronoun that refers to the
person or thing that is affected by the action of the verb.
Examples:
I admire your courage.
We need to maintain product quality.
I couldn’t face him today.
She loves animals.
In the following sentences, admire, maintain, face, and love are transitive verbs:
Intransitive Verb
An intransitive verb does not have an object.
Examples:
The baby was crying.
I work for a large firm in Paris.
They laughed uncontrollably.
We talked for hours.
In the following sentences, cry, work, laugh, and talk are intransitive verbs.
A. Pick out the verb in each sentence and state whether it is transitive or intransitive

A Rainy Day
A rainy day is a delightful phenomenon of nature. It brings us great joy. Rain swallows heat and
breathes new life into a dull and dreary atmosphere. One afternoon, a cool wind began to blow.
Soon after this, the dark clouds covered the sky. It flashed and thundered. Then, it began to rain
heavily. I was very happy. The streets were full of water. The rain stopped after an hour. The
weather became pleasant. The children also came out. Some children began to bathe in rain
water. Some children began to float paper boats. Some children splashed the water on each
other. Nature also looked beautiful. Fields and gardens looked fresh. The birds, animals and
human beings heaved a sigh of relief. A rainbow appeared in the sky. Some people went out to
enjoy the beautiful scenes of nature. They were happy to see trees and plants in their natural
color. Everything was looking green and gay. The earth appeared really green.

Village Life
Most of the people in the world reside in villages. In Pakistan 70% of our population still lives in
villages. The main occupation of people living in the villages is agriculture. The farmers get up
early in the morning and plough their fields with the help of oxen. His children and wife also
help him in his work. The farmers make up the backbone of a nation’s economy because we get
vegetable, fruits and corn for our daily use. Pakistan exports a large quantity of agricultural
products to other countries of the world.
Village life is calm and serene. There is no rush of traffic. The villages are free from noise and
air pollution. The villagers lead a relatively stress free life and people are not that much
concerned with how they look, what they wear and how slim they are as in city life.

The people usually enjoy healthy life as they eat fresh and nutritious food. The vegetables are

In the ups and downs of life, such moments come when man feels quite hopeless. He finds
darkness all around him and his power to face it disappears. This is against the dignity of man.

Once upon a time, a jackal lived near the bank of a river. There were many fields of melons on
the other side of the river. The river was deep and wide. The jackal wanted to eat his fill. He
could not cross the river. One day, he said to his friend, camel, '' I shall be very thankful to you if
you take me to the other bank of the river". The camel agreed. The jackal jumped onto the back
of the camel. The camel waded across the river and reached the other bank. The jackal went into
the fields of melons and began to eat melons with relish.
