Central Idea of the poem

‘The Rain’ is a deeply symbolic poem in which upper leaves of tree represent the upper and
affluent class and the lower leaves represent the poor of the society. The sunshine symbolizes the
day when the darkness of poverty will come to an end and there will be a fair distribution of
blessings of nature.
Summary

The poem “The Rain” has been written by W.H.Davies. In this short poem the poet describes a
reality of life through illustrating a serene view of rain. He says that he hears the leaves drinking
rain. The leaves on top are full of water of rain. The upper leaves, after quenching their thirst,
pass on the drops to the lower leaves. It means that the rich people should help the poor. The
poet says the sun will come out after raining and will brighten up each rain drop. It will be a
lovely sight. The poet means to say that there would be equality in the society just like the
sunshine which spreads all over the world equally. This poem has symbolic meanings and a
beautiful message for rich people.

Context: This beautiful and short poem describes the scene of rain. The scene is
explained quite mesmerizingly by the poet.
Explanation: The poet hears the sound of falling rain on leaves. The leaves seem to be
drinking water. The top leaves are growing in plenty; therefore rich. The lower leaves are
growing thin; therefore poor. The rain is falling in heavy showers on the top rich leaves.
But the rain water is falling drop after drop on the lower thin leaves. It looks as the rich
people give alms coin after coin to the poor. However, the music produced by the falling
rain on the leaves is soft and sweet.

(2) And when the sun comes out,

After this rain shall stop,
A wondrous light will fill
Each dark, round drop;
I hope the Sun shines bright;
It will be a lovely sight.

My mother loves me very much. She always takes care of my health. She cooks food that I like
but she warns me against over eating. She gives me good clothes. She is against costly clothes.
She reads me books regularly. I am a bit weak in English, so she has employed a teacher for me.
She reminds me to study daily.

In the ups and downs of life, such moments come when man feels quite hopeless. He finds
darkness all around him and his power to face it disappears. This is against the dignity of man.
All the progress that the world has made is the result of the determination and perseverance that
Allah has bestowed upon man. Man should never lose heart; rather he should face the failures
manfully. Surely Allah will bless him with success.

Once upon a time, a jackal lived near the bank of a river. There were many fields of melons on
the other side of the river. The river was deep and wide. The jackal wanted to eat his fill. He
could not cross the river. One day, he said to his friend, camel, '' I shall be very thankful to you if
you take me to the other bank of the river". The camel agreed. The jackal jumped onto the back
of the camel. The camel waded across the river and reached the other bank. The jackal went into
the fields of melons and began to eat melons with relish.
