CHAPTER 2 COUNTERMEASURE AGAINST TROUBLES

2.2 Rise in Bearing Temperature

The bearing temperature is usually measured at the bearing box and it is normally less than 40℃ above the
ambient temperature. But it fluctuates depending on the point of measurement, ambient temperature, cooling
water temperature, viscosity of the lubricant used and so forth. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the
tolerable temperature based on the lubrication, method of measurement, ambient conditions and so forth
without much considerabtion of “less than 40℃ above the ambient temperature”.
If the temperature is stable, it generally does not cause overheating even at quite high temperatures, but it is
necessary to keep an eye on the relation between the oil temperature and the bearing temperature, and watch
for rapid increases in the bearing temperature. Especially when a stable temperature suddenly starts to rise, it
is necessary to find out its cause even if the absolute value of the. temperature is low.

2. 1.1 Causes of Bearing Temperature Rise and Countermeasures

The cause of bearing temperature rise is often associated with vibrations, and it is necessary to include the
causes of vibrations in the following measures.

Cause Countermeasure

1. Cooling Water

a) Failure in cooling water supply ○Supply cooling water immediately.

b) Rise in cooling water temperature ○Increase the flow (within the limit) or fit a cooler.

2. Lubricant Oil

a) Degradation of lubricant ○Change oil.

b) Lubricant mixed with water ○Change oil.

c) Lubricant mixed with impurities ○Change oil.

3. Trouble in Oil Supply

a) Malfunction of oil pump ○Repair and readjust. Replace with new one if necessary.

b) Low oil level in oil tank ○Supply new oil.

c) Clogged oil strainer or oil filter ○Clean it.

CHAPTER 2 COUNTERMEASURE AGAINST TROUBLES

Cause Countermeasure

d) Reduced performance of oil cooler ○Increase cooling water. Clean the tube or replace if necessary.

e) Mistaken operational oil piping valves ○Normalize the valves. Lock the handle if necessary.

4. Incorrect Alignment ○Realign.

5. Vibration ○Refer to the previous section.

6. Damage in Bearing ○Reline babbit or replace the bearing.

2.3 Unusual Sound

Unusual sounds are mainly caused by the following reasons. As most unusual sounds associated with trouble,
it is necessary to disassemble immediately, check the cause, and repair the trouble.

1)Contact of rotor

2) Vibration of casing

3) Damage in bearings

4) Foreign material introduced

2.4 Reduced Performance

The performance of the blower generally drops because of changes in the operating condition and long
continuous operation. The effect of long continuous operation should be taken care of by periodical inspections
and repairs.

1. Reduced speed of rotation ○Check on meters.

(Power Supply Frequency)

2. Inadequate opening of inlet and outlet valves ○Check the pressure difference across each valve, and
 adjust the opening indicator.

3. Malfunction of meters ○Check and calibrate them.

CHAPTER 4 MAINTENANCE

4.3 Lubrication
4. 3.1 General Remarks on Lubrication

1) Lubrication is most important in operation and maintenance of a machine. The durability and maintenance
cost of machines depend greatly on the quality of lubricant even if they are operated in the same conditions.

2) The lubricant used for trial operations should be changed as soon as possible.

3) Prevent dust when changing lubricant. Dust in lubricant causes scars, wear, and overheating of the bearing,
and great care should be taken when the lubricant is changed in a dusty place.

4. 3.2 Lubricants Used

Refer to the “Lubricating oil and Grease List”
1) When there is no lubricant, the user particularly wants to use the one to be used is what we recommend for the
purpose, and the use of ones equivalent to those we recommend is advisable. Contact with your
lubricant supplier.

2) It is recommended to check the oil condition 500,100,and 2000 hours after the start of the operations.
Check it every 2000 hours after that.

3) The times of lubricant change and refill given are only for your reference, and the decision should be made on
the advice from the lubricant supplier, or referring to the guide supplied by the lubricant manufacturer.
