Study goals
Our MA in Linguistics and Applies Language Studies designed for people who want to know more
about how foreign or second languages (particularly English) are learned, and how different kinds
of classroom practice might affect proficiency. Students will learn about different approaches to
understanding language and language acquisition, and will be taught the methods that can be used to
investigate language learning and teaching.
The MA Program in Applied Linguistics and Educational Technology is comprehensive in its scope
and designed to introduce students to the theoretical, empirical and practical dimensions of applied
linguistics and the use of technology in teaching English. The Program emphasizes both theory and
practice.
Its interdisciplinary core curriculum includes courses in:
• Basic theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics
• Psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics
• Discourse analysis and research methods
• ESL/EFL methodologies
• Educational technologies and e-learning
The program is thus designed to enable students to understand the diversity of issues inherent in the
study of language and TEFL so they are well prepared to teach and do research in applied linguistics.
Students pursuing the MA in Linguistics and Applies Language Studies have a wide range of
opportunities, including conducting research, working with community-based organizations, or
preparing to teach in various contexts, such as public or private schools and language. Students can also
go on to pursue doctoral work in such fields as linguistics, education, and literacy studies. Prospective
students need not have teaching experience to be considered for acceptance into the program.
The program operates on a cohort model whereby all participants complete the same program of study
over a two-year period.

Developing Researcher Competence

In recent years, there have been a number of changes in Moroccan language planning and policy
whereby more focus has been granted to languages (Standard Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, Amazigh, and
foreign languages especially French and English. In particular, the explicit research element has
increased and become obligatory. It is within this framework that all the course units on this MA
program « Linguistics and Applies Language Studies » involve a research element of one sort of
another. The main is to improve students research competence. This Developing Research Competence
is a main goal of all subjects of the Master program where this explicit research requirement is most
obviously located. The title – Developing Research Competence – intentionally focuses on the
researcher and their developing competence rather as well as focusing on research methodologies and
training in them.

DRC is a compulsory course objective in all modules for students in this Linguistics and Applies
Language Studies MA programme. It is usually taken towards the latter part of the taught component of
these programmes, just prior to the Dissertation for which it is preparatory – the self-generated topic
that participants explore in it is usually closely linked to their Dissertation topic.

Aims —
The modules of this MA are conceptually divided into two components. The first is concerned with
developing the participants’ researcher competence through the planning, designing, implementing
and writing-up of a small-scale study (usually linked by topic to their Dissertation) and to link this
endeavour to critical reflection on how the experience of this study contributes to their developing
research competence. The course aims to:

- Provide a conceptual understanding of the principles and practice of Linguistics and Applies
Language Studies and education-related research and to foster an awareness of a variety of research
approaches, methods, and techniques;
-Explore the uses of technology in education and education-related research;
-(mainly in relation to Applied Linguistics axe of this MA) to explore how research may be undertaken
into the various modules of this MA;
-Encourage critical reflection on the process of planning, designing, implementing, and writing-up
Applied Linguistics and education-related research; and
-Encourage critical reflection on the process through which the researcher develops their competence in
education and/or education-related research.
The second component is concerned with deepening participants’ knowledge and understanding of the
methods and methodologies of data collection and data analysis. To this end, they will study modules
related to this. As incorporated into these courses, the aims of this component of the course are to:
-Introduce the principles and practice associated with one or more research approaches, methods, and
techniques;
-Introduce the principles and practice associated with one or more areas of data analysis; and
-Reflect critically on the appropriacy of particular approaches, methods, and techniques for specific
research activities.
