Main Source of Income

Over the years, main source of income is gradually replaced by non-agricultural activities particularly
in Calamba City. The industrialization brought economic boosts complemented with the influx of work-
force specifically on technical skills. As evident in graph-H1, main source of income for Calambeños
come from wages and salaries contributed by the non-agricultural sources.
Alternately, entrepreneurship is the best resort for people who have the ability and guts to plunge into
the business world. Similarly, businessmen were more into non-agricultural trades, comprising 97% of
people engaged in entrepreneurial activities once more living agricultural potentials behind.
On the other hand, there are other sources comprised of various activities. This ranked second but far
behind the proportion of salaries and wages. Derived income from this includes cash receipts, gifts
and other forms of assistance abroad which provided the highest contribution among other sources of
income.
The prevailing condition holds true for Laguna except that proportion of individuals earning from agri-
culture was much bigger in Laguna. (15.5% compared to 1.2% in Calamba). This is a proof that many
towns and cities in Laguna are still engaged in agricultural activities and only a few including Calamba
was developed industrially.

is higher by about 4,232 people and the average income per family in San Pedro is higher by
Php12,569 pesos. Moreover total family expenditures as compared to total income in Calamba
City (85.7) is 10% higher as that of San Pedro (75.7). San Pablo has the highest rate of spend-
ing habits (91.0%) while Biñan recorded only 74.9%.

Distribution of Expenditures
Money spent for food took the big part of household expenditures. A little more than 2/5
(43.2%) of income were used-up on food either consumed at home or outside. Education and
Medical Care which are next two most important considerations in life ranked 7 th and 13th re-
spectively. Vanity interfered since personal care and clothing were given priority over educa-
tion and health. It is however surprising to know that rentals of real property came next in the
expenses of households. This somehow gives weight to the migrating families staying on
rented places and also an eye opener that many households still do not have their own house
and lot.

Although recorded income per capita per month of Calamba City appears low, this is compara-
bly higher compared to the poverty threshold set for Laguna in 2001 and for Calabarzon in
2003. Benchmarks for both are Php12,940 annually or Php1,078 per month and Php14,616
annually or Php1,218 per month respectively. These imply how Calamba fairs high enough
from the benchmarks by about Php2,510 and Php2,370.85 compared to Laguna and Calabar-
zon respectively.
