design. There are pairs of shapes that embrace each other. See if you can find
them.
• Embrace the magic of nature by looking through the hand-made telescopes
revealing previous views of space in the Discover The World Room!
• Embrace colours in the Friendship Room–spin the colour wheel or the floor
cylinders to see how primary colours create new colours. Open up the octagon
and discover how many small triangles it is made out of.
• Embrace touch in the Family Room with the mosaic dinner table. Touch and
feel the table, creating using the mosaic technique. How was it made? Can
you recognise and name the types of food on it?
• Embrace your future self in the Self Room “trying on” different characters!

best viewing spot for the wall piece is outside Koh Seow Chuan Concourse Gallery.

These lanterns are inspired by the traditional damar kurung
lanterns, typically hung in front of homes during the month of
Ramadan. Each lantern represents five facets of democracy:
Collaboration, Love, Equality, Care and Peace.

Stand or sit on the floor markers to activate lanterns. Remember to

keep a safe distance from the lanterns as they are fragile!

The various lanterns require different numbers of people on the

markers to ignite their lights and colours. Encourage your child to
make new friends to activate the lanterns!

Some questions to ask your child:

• Why do you think the artist titled the work after fireflies?
• Look at the designs and characters on the lanterns. What do they
look like? What do you think they are doing?
• Listen closely to the gentle gamelan soundscape of each lantern.
What do you hear?

Discuss the idea of democracy with your child. What is democracy? Is

Singapore a democracy? Why are the five values represented by these
lanterns needed for democracy to exist?

HOW TO ENGAGE? IMAGES

You are invited to sit on a family of ducks, or ride the wooden sampan,
to imagine what life in Singapore was like in the 1950s. You are also
invited to play with traditional games such as wooden blocks and
chapteh. Please return these games to the original locations after use.

Some questions to ask your child:

• Imagine living in a village. What sights and sounds are there?
• If this sampan could transport you anywhere, where would you sail
to? Who would you bring with you on your journey?
• What animals would you like to raise? Will there be ducks?
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY IDEAS
Fun Activity: Role play a pair of characters from the original painting: together
with your child, ick a pair of characters that appeal to you the most. Situate
yourself within the installation, for example sit in the sampan or on the ducks.
Then, imagine yourselves as the characters and have a conversation. Try having
different conversations as other characters too!
