ABSTRACT

English has always been one of the official languages of the Philippines

and according to the website; Britishcouncil.ph it is spoken by more than 14 million

Filipinos. This paper deals with the usage of English language to a normal

employee, how is it important and if he uses jargons.

This paper aims to investigate the relationship of English language and a

typical employee based on his/her lived experiences. As its title implies “Eng-

Grown” ,which derived from the words English and Grown, the main purpose of

the study was to describe and get the response of the employees directly from their

point of view on how are they affected by the continues growth of English and how

are they affected in order to come up with a reflection that would be beneficial to

students and their profession in the future. The methodology used in gathering data

for this paper is an interview that was set like a casual talk to the interviewee. The

participant in the study was from the salon namely, Airbrush 21 Salon and Spa

located at Brgy. Uno Calamba City, Laguna. There are different professions that

need highly competency in English. But in this study, the researchers found out that

not only the white collar workers are required to learn English but even those blue

collar workers like manicurist, therapist and other jobs are both required knowledge

of English but in different ways. In this case of our interviewee, knowledge of

English is required but a very high competency level was not necessarily required.

Knowing the terminology of their field and having the understanding and courage

to use the English language were seen as more important. Mastering grammar or

pronunciation were not the most important factors but instead the main idea was to

able to communicate comprehensibly. Therefore the study revealed that there is a

relevant relationship between the English language and an ordinary employee

working at a salon.

Keywords: blue collar workers, English language, communicate comprehensibly,

competency level

CHAPTER 2

THE INTERVIEWEE

Filipinos are recognized as one of the most hardworking people in the

world. They work simultaneously having or more jobs in a day. They work just to

provide the needs of their family to survive. In the Philippines, most of the workers

in the cities are the people from provinces. Though it‟s a good choice to live in

province people prefer to live in cities in order to provide daily needs. Other cities

are now absorbing some of the industries from Metro Manila. By moving to these

emerging cities, people may be able to look for companies that require their skill set.

They also choose to work in cities than provinces because of high salaries. But not

all people manage to find job that have high salaries especially if those people are

not degree holder.

Those who work in salon and spas and do services such as "manicurist

and pedicurist" - the one who do manicures on hand and feet providing treatments

to groom fingernails and toe nails and the "massage therapist" - treat client by using

touch to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. These two jobs work full time but

some have variable schedules and work part time.

CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND REFLECTION

This chapter includes the key points from the interviewee (summary),

the interviewers‟ takeaways from those key points (conclusion), and the

interviewers‟ individual realization on the benefits of the output relative to their

future career.

SUMMARY

 The conducted interview shows the part of minority who‟s not fluent in using

English language.

 The interviewee, Sharon admitted that she‟s not good at using the English

language and based on her story whenever she had foreign clients, ”Hindi ko po

sila kinakausap. minsan na-oo nalang ako kasi di ko naman sila

naiintindihan...” she also mentioned that she‟s a highschool undergrad. This

implies that the lack of education affects the performance in using the language.

 “…nakaaway ko yung kumare ko si Gelo ang yabang yabang na kung

magsalita sa akin, nanakit pa! ... Makipagmeeting ka sa employer hindi ka

Department of Business Education 23

pwedeng manakit, mangurot, mangganyan tapos ginaganun ka (unethical

act) parang di sya nag-aral ba! Parang ninanakdawan (belittled) nya

kami, na masahista lang talaga kami…”. Sharon shared how she was unfairly

treated ny one of her friend that turned into manager that degraded her

personality.

 The interviewee‟s TESDA trainings helped her enhance her knowledge about her

work as she had these terms; Foot Massage, Hand Massage, Body Massage and

Shiatsu.

 “…kelangan talaga na matuto ka rin sa english kasi hindi lahat lahat

tagalog dito pumapasok.”. This clearly shows the importance of the English

language at work.

 English has been part of life of an individual, though it is not require to have high

competency in using the language for a manicurist, as long as the employee can

convey and communicate.

 English language is not just relevant to a licensed professional but also to any

typical employee.
City College of Calamba
Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Calamba
Department of Business Education 24

CONCLUSION

 Not all the users of English language are fluent in using it.

 The researchers barely realized that education; its essence in the continuous and

life-long learning from elementary until the tertiary level is important. It is where

the knowledge about English language introduced and continuously develops.

 As these minority showed the percentage of not fluent in using the language due

to their deficiencies because they are lack of education the disadvantages arose.

This implies the impact of education; it‟s been used as an asset of every individual

somehow, creates a wall between people who has high and low competencies and

those with high competencies overpower the others. Meaning, the ability of

someone in English can improves and excels one's chance of getting a job.

 In today‟s world, education is very accessible. From the disadvantage arose,

treatment to overcome this has risen. TESDA and other trainings or seminars can

hydrate those that were affected to the knowledge that they thirst from.

 The interviewee clearly stated that English is very essential in her work. As they

work with their colleagues, customers or clients, boss, and partners from other

countries to understand each other, so they can form effective and productive

working relationships.
City College of Calamba
Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Calamba
Department of Business Education 25

 Level of competency in using the English language varies in different professions.

For example, Certified Public Accountants are essential in decision making and

analysis they are required with the higher level of competency than these typical

employees. The most important thing is they can all comprehend and understand

each other‟s point while using the English language.

 The result of this research is a proof that both professional and non-professional

workers need the English language. It is proven that having an English ability or

good communication skill is an advantage.

REFLECTION

SILVESTRE, CRISTINE JOY

According to ate Sharon, “Ah oo, kelangan talaga na matuto ka rin sa

english kasi hindi lahat lahat tagalog dito pumapasok no? Sosyal nga ano dito

costumer, mga yayamanin... Yung iba nagpapanggap mahirap, nagtatricycle,

mayaman pala”.

English is an important tool especially when it comes to work. It plays a

major role in communicating to other people. English is also one of the most used

language in the world. It helps the workers to communicate to foreign people. Also,
City College of Calamba

it helps them to understand and generate sentences. And at the same time, you‟ll

improve your vocabulary and comprehension skills without even feeling like you‟re

studying. A good knowledge of English allows you to communicate effectively with

international clients, helping them to trust you resulting in strong and lasting

business relationships. You could get ahead of other candidates when you are

applying for a new job or a promotion by being proficient in English. Speaking

English opens up a wide range of new opportunities both in your career and in your

na matuto ka rin sa english kasi hindi lahat lahat tagalog dito pumapasok no? Sosyal

nga ano dito costumer, mga yayamanin..." . It clearly showed that all types of

workers are required to know how to speak in English.

language is, in performing job even you are classified as a blue collar worker. As

future CPA, my future career would most likely require me to do presentations and

write formal emails to clients, business partners, bosses and even my subordinates.

Through this experience it gave me an insight that we should learn how to speak

and write in English language as it is being a near-mandatory requirement for any

kinds of jobs. Also, it helps me to better understand how the real world works and

as a future professional this will help me to lead in a good path that possesses

VELARDE, ARIANNE

We all know that having the ability to communicate using English

language is important. It can boost our confidence and by that we can be competent

enough.

The interview that was conducted which entitled, "Engrown: The Lived

Experiences of Salon Workers towards the Use of English Language at Work" aims

to know how important English is in the nature of the job of a manicurist and

massage therapist.

Our interviewee, Ate Sharon believed that knowing how to

communicate using English language is really important. When Trixia asked her if

English is important for her, she answer without hesitation saying, " ah oo, kelangan

talaga na matuto ka rin sa english kasi hindi lahat lahat tagalog pumapasok dito no".

By that, we realized that it is really important in every nature of a job. It is because

we are in a globalized era wherein people of different nationality are everywhere and

English language as the universal language should be taught and learned.

As a Certified Public Accountant, it is really important that we are well-educated

and is fluent in English language. We, CPAs is in a profession wherein we need to

communicate with people/clients who may not understand tagalog especially our

foreign clients. As I said, we are in a globalized era and the possibility to talk with

people with different language is big. In addition, English is also known as the

Business Language and we Certified Public Accountants in the world of business.

BANATICLA, TRIXIA MAE

English language played important role on different fields, it could be in

Science and Technology, Medical, Law, Business, Economics and so on. As

globalization hits our generation and promotes interconnectedness among nations,

English language served as our bridge to communicate and one of our tools in

development. This became one of the reasons why we tend to acquire such

knowledge to master this language. Even ordinary people are expected to learn the

language for as they work, English also becomes part of their lives.

From the conducted interview with an ordinary salon employee, it

implies the essence of using English language at her work. As she started to work

originally as a massage therapist she tends to encounter clients from different social

classes and nationality. This means that she needs to learn how to speak using

English language. Whereas it is the Lingua Franca which allows us to transcend

information, communicate and understand each other. And as she learns the

language, she also attended training that helped her to expand her knowledge.

The short talk we had done reflected on how important to learn the

English language. This language is important to a typical employee, much more to

licensed one‟s specifically to Certified Public Accountants. Whereas, CPAs are

important in decision making, so analytical, logical, and critical thinking are relevant.

Also, they work with high-end clients dealing with businesses. It is part of one‟s life,

it creates job and opportunities, it helps us to become better person and it spice up

our personalities.

communicate is a huge asset to many companies and industries, making this ability

very valuable skill. A good knowledge of English allows us to communicate

effectively with international clients and it makes your skill set more attractive to

In the Philippines, most industries and organizations hired applicants

that is knowledgeable in English because as one of the countries who speak good in

English it is a very important language that can be used to transact business from

different countries and it help us to understand and talk to them effectively. As Ate

Sharon even though she is an undergraduate of high school being a therapist and

manicurist need a training so that it makes them more skilled worker and

competitive just like the people who is degree holder.

As a student who is going to work in the future, it helps us as an eye

opener that Ate Sharon is one of the people who works hard to earn and money

and to provide the needs of her family even though she's not with them because she

said on the interview that she lives in the province and go here to look for a job that

could fit her qualifications and also that the busies world required learning the

English language for us to be able to communicate well with other countries.

work with their colleagues, customers or clients, boss, and partners from other

countries to understand each other, so they can form effective and productive

working relationships. Just like in the case of the interviewee who is a manicurist

and therapist, as she stated "Ah oo, kelangan talaga na matuto ka rin sa English kasi

hindi lahat tagalog dito pumapasok no. Sosyal nga ano dito, customer, mga

yayamanin..." Meaning, if her job required the use of English since there is a

possibility of having a foreign customers, what more those jobs that works in a

´ “Naku… Talaga namng gustong gusto kong gumraduate eh, wala na

gahol na sa ano, sa edad thirty two na going thirty three nap o eh”. Ate Sharon our

interviewee told us her willingness to finish her studies. It‟s sad that she‟s not able

to achieve her dreams, just because of her responsibility with her family she didn‟t

continue her studies. This gave me the realization on how lucky I am that I have a

chance to finish college and find a stable job after I finish this course, As a future

Certified Public Accountant ( C.P.A.). It‟s very important for me to be fluent in

English as I were going to communicate with different people, clients, customers

and workmates. It‟s important for us future CPA,s as English is the language of

businesses and it‟s use to prepare the financial statements of the company that we

are going to work to, it‟s important for us as we are going to make decisions for the
