Note from Teacher - 1 This week is an exciting one in our class! In mathematics, we
will be starting a unit on rational numbers, including fractions,
decimals, ratios, and proportions. To provide some more

dynamic help to our students while tackling these topics, we
will be using two technology programs to enhance learning: The
Splash Math - 3 Fraction App and Splash Math. I am confident that these
programs will aid in learning and concept development. In this
newsletter, I will be telling you some more information about
these programs so that you are familiar with what we will be
working on in class.

If possible, I would encourage you to test these apps out for

yourself to see what we will be working on and to support our
scholars throughout their learning!

The Fraction App
The Fraction App is an
interactive technology
program that allows students
to lead the way in discovering
patterns and facts about
fractions and math processes
(addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division).
This program can be run on
Apple devices and on the web.
The program is based on
visual models the students
create. For example, students
can use a bar or a circle and
select how they want to divide
the bar or circle into equal
parts, thus representing a
fraction. They can shade or
color in part(s) of the visual
model they create.
The Fraction App also allows
students to more directly
connect what they are learning
with rational numbers to real
life. For example, the top
screenshot on the right of this
page shows how a teacher
used The Fraction App to ask
a problem about time.The
pattern of shaded parts
representing the numerator
and all parts representing the
denominator is enforced here.
What I especially like about
the program is that it allows
students to keep their thinking
organized. Through the use of
different colors and labels
using the toolbar at the bottom
of The Fraction App screen,
students can accurately track
which fractions represent
which parts of a problem. In
this way, students can visually
compare multiple fractions on
one screen, which will be
particularly helpful when we
complete multi-step problems
with fractions.
In addition to the design being
appealing to the agency of
students, I found this program
to be useful when modeling
Equivalent Fractions, as
shown in the bottom
screenshot on the right.
Students might then use the
program to write a math
sentence comparing
quantities.
Overall, The Fraction App will
be useful for our class
because it is driven by the
students, who are able to
provide evidence through
visual models for their
thinking.

Splash Math
Splash Math is a program that
is used for the K-5 curriculum
in order to assess and track
the progress of the student.
Splash Math runs interactive
games that adapts to the way
the child learns. The parent
and/or teacher is actively
involved in monitoring the
progress of the student, either
through emails or in the
Splash Math iPhone App. This
will yield important information
I will be able to use while
planning my lessons because I
will know areas that need
extra practice or homework to
reinforce learning. I like how
the program both adapts to
the student's performance and
how the student is
participating in meaningful
math concept work.
This program will be helpful
especially when we work on
the topic of fractions greater
than 1, which is an area
students tend to get confused
with. The visuals allow for a
smooth recall of knowledge to
adding fractions to facilitate
progress. Aligned with
Common Core Standards, the
games and applets under this
topic
help students recall what they
have already learned in
previous math lessons. For
example, the game might ask
a student which Improper
Fraction a visual model
depicts (see the screenshot on
the right). Students would use
their knowledge of adding
fractions to determine the
answer. If the student answers
correctly the applet gives him
or her a coin. If the student
answers incorrectly, the game
will advise him or her of that
and allow the student to try
again. The progression of
tasks is logical and
cumulative, just like the
curriculum we use.
This program can be found
online (on your mobile phone,
tablet, desktop computer, or
laptop). It is visually appealing
and entertaining, as well as
educational. Each child will
start an account in our first
class of this week (it's free!)
and students will be able to
access their account at school
and at home to practice. When
you get to the site, the grade
levels are listed across the top
of the page, and there are
many choices for activities by
topic.

matemáticas, estamos empezando una unidad de los números
rationales, incluyendo fracciones, los decimales y
proporciones. Para proveer más ayudo dinámico a nuestros
estudiantes cuando están trabajando en la unidad, vamos a
usar dos programas de tecnología para mejorar la aprendizaje:
programas van a ayudar el aprendizaje y el desarrollo de
conceptos. En este boletín, voy a darte más información sobre

The Fraction App
The Fraction App (la aplicación
de fracciones) es un programa
de tecnología interactiva que
permite a los estudiantes liderar
el camino en el descubrimiento
de patrones y hechos sobre
fracciones y procesos
matemáticos (adición, resta,
multiplicación y división). Este
programa se puede ejecutar en
dispositivos Apple y en la web.
El programa se basa en modelos
visuales que los estudiantes
crean. Por ejemplo, los alumnos
pueden utilizar una barra o un
círculo y seleccionar cómo
desean dividir la barra o el
círculo en partes iguales, lo que
representa una fracción. Pueden
sombrear o colorear en las
piezas del modelo visual que
crean.
La aplicación de fracciones
también permite a los
estudiantes conectar más
directamente lo que están
aprendiendo con números
racionales a la vida real. Por
ejemplo, la captura de pantalla
superior a la derecha de esta
página muestra cómo un
profesor usó La aplicación
Fracción para preguntar un
problema sobre el tiempo. El
patrón de partes sombreadas
que representan el numerador y
todas las partes que representan
el denominador se aplica aquí.
Lo que más me gusta del
programa es que permite a los

Splash Math
Splash Math es un programa que
se utiliza para el plan de
estudios K-5 con el fin de evaluar
y realizar un seguimiento del
progreso del estudiante. Splash
Math ejecuta juegos interactivos
que se adaptan a la forma en
que el niño aprende. El padre y/o
profesor participa activamente en
el monitoreo del progreso del
estudiante, ya sea a través de
correos electrónicos o en la
aplicación Splash Math para
iPhone. Esto producirá
información importante que
podré usar mientras planeo mis
lecciones porque sabré áreas
que necesitan práctica adicional
o tarea para reforzar el
aprendizaje. Me gusta cómo el
programa se adapta al
rendimiento del estudiante y
cómo el estudiante está
participando en un concepto de
matemáticas significativo.
Este programa será útil
especialmente cuando
trabajamos en el tema de
fracciones mayores que 1, que
es un área con la que los
estudiantes tienden a
confundirse. Los objetos visuales
permiten una recuperación fluida
del conocimiento para agregar
fracciones para facilitar el
progreso. Alineados con los
Estándares Básicos Comunes,
los juegos y applets bajo este
tema
ayudar a los alumnos a recordar
lo que ya han aprendido en
lecciones de matemáticas
anteriores. Por ejemplo, el juego
podría preguntar a un alumno
qué fracción incorrecta
representa un modelo visual
(consulte la captura de pantalla
de la derecha). Los estudiantes
usarían su conocimiento de
agregar fracciones para
determinar la respuesta. Si el
estudiante responde
correctamente, el applet le da
una moneda. Si el estudiante
responde incorrectamente, el
juego le aconsejará de eso y
permitirá que el estudiante
vuelva a intentarlo. La progresión
de las tareas es lógica y
acumulativo, al igual que el plan
de estudios que usamos.
Este programa se puede
encontrar en línea (en su ¿Cual fracción representa la parte sombreada?
teléfono móvil, tableta,
computadora de escritorio o
portátil). Es visualmente
atractivo y entretenido, así como
educativo. Cada niño iniciará una
cuenta en nuestra primera clase
de esta semana (¡es gratis!) y los
estudiantes podrán acceder a su
cuenta en la escuela y en casa
para practicar. Al llegar al sitio,
los niveles de calificación se
enumeran en la parte superior de
la página y hay muchas opciones
para las actividades por tema.
