THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

Time after Pentecost, Lectionary 25

September 21st, and 22nd, 2019 PRELUDE Chorale Partita on Gather Us In Wells
Holy Communion (Now the Feast) WELCOME

INVOCATION

INTRODUCTION In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Consideration of and care for those in need (especially those “at our gate,”
visible to us, of whom we are aware) is an essential component of good GATHERING SONG: Gather Us In (ELW 532)
stewardship. It is in the sharing of wealth that we avoid the snare of wealth.
It is the one whom death could not hold—who comes to us risen from the GREETING
dead—who can free us from the death grip of greed.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags the Holy Spirit be with you all!
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. And also with you!
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
CANTICLE OF PRAISE
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all
cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.

We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

O God, give us grace to set a good example to all among whom we live, to
be just and true in all our dealings, to be strict and conscientious in the
discharge of every duty; pure and temperate in all enjoyment, gracious and
generous and courteous toward all; so that the mind of Jesus Christ may be
formed in us and all may know that we are his disciples; in whose name we
pray.
Amen.
at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours.” 8Then my
cousin Hanamel came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with
the word of the LORD, and said to me, “Buy my field that is at Anathoth in
the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours;
buy it for yourself.” Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
9And I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and
weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver. 10I signed the
deed, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money on scales. 11Then I
took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions, and
the open copy; 12and I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah
son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, in the presence of
the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, and in the presence of all
the Judeans who were sitting in the court of the guard. 13In their presence I
charged Baruch, saying, 14Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and
put them in an earthenware jar, in order that they may last for a long time.
15
For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and
vineyards shall again be bought in this land.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
The word of the Lord.
O God, rich in mercy, you look with compassion on this troubled world. Thanks be to God.
Feed us with your grace, and grant us the treasure that comes only from
you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. PSALM 91:1-6, 14-16
Amen.

Please be seated. Refrain:

In the year before Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians, when the siege had
already begun, Jeremiah, imprisoned in the king’s palace, purchased a

SECOND READING: 1 TIMOTHY 6:6-19

Timothy is reminded of the confession he made at his baptism and of its

implications for daily life. His priorities will be different from those of
people who merely want to be rich.

Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; 7for
we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it;

but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. 9But those
who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless
and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the VERSE:

OFFERTORY The Lone Wild Bird Johnson/Wells
RITE OF ANOINTING FOR HEALING
OFFERTORY HYMN: As the Grains of Wheat (ELW 465)
“The order for healing is an expression in worship of the church’s ministry
of healing. Each person may come to receive a word of blessing and prayer
for healing and forgiveness, along with laying on of hands and an
anointing. These signs, first given in baptism, tell us again that we are
sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who
is health and salvation for the world.

In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that
come through the scientific community nor does it promise a cure. Rather
the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with
strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and
peace and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.”

Brothers and sisters, James writes: “Is any one of you sick? Let him call the
elders of the church to prayer over him and anoint him with oil in the name
of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well;
the Lord will raise him up.”

I invite you to come forward for anointing and prayer in the name of the
Lord.

Worshippers may come forward.

The minister will anoint each with the sign of the cross, praying: OFFERING PRAYER

our lives may reflect your generosity; through Christ our Lord.
Please rise and greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ. Amen.
DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lord’s body
PREFACE and blood, each time the words “Do this for the remembrance of me,” are
spoken.
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Holy God,
our Bread of life, our Table, and our Food,
you created a world in which all might be satisfied by your
abundance.
You dined with Abraham and Sarah, promising them life,
and fed your people Israel with manna from heaven.
You sent your Son to eat with sinners
and to become food for the world.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, a blessing. Pastor will be glad to discuss Holy Communion and Holy
and gave it for all to drink, saying: Baptism with you!
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. LAMB OF GOD
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore,
his life given for us
and his rising from the grave,
we await his coming again to share with us the everlasting feast.
By your Spirit nurture and sustain us with this meal:
strengthen us to serve all in hunger and want,
and by this bread and cup make of us the body of your Son.
Through him all glory and honor is yours,
Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit,
in your holy Church,
both now and forever. Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER

Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Jerome was a biblical scholar and translator, but rather than translating the
original Hebrew and Greek scriptures into classical Latin, he worked in the
commonly-spoken Latin of the day, creating a version called the Vulgate.
