Windows 95 was a major release of the Windows operating system by Microsoft in August 1995. It featured a redesigned user interface with a Start button and desktop, as well as new capabilities like plug-and-play hardware installation and a 32-bit architecture allowing faster performance and larger memory capacity. Windows 95 was also able to run most existing Windows and DOS applications while providing improved system responsiveness, networking support, and ease of use. However, it still had some interface inconsistencies and weaker protection against buggy applications compared to other operating systems.

an operating system released by Microsoft in August 15, 1995. It is the biggest release of Windows and still one of the most successful software releases ever. Windows 95 features • Windows 95 offered a completely new environment when compared to Windows 3.11 with its new Start button and desktop. • Below are some of the other new features Windows 95 introduced, most of which are still used with current versions of Windows • Plug-and-Play - Plug and play allowed hardware devices to be automatically installed into the computer with the proper software. Does not require jumpers to be used. • Device Manager - Introduced Device Manager to help list and control computer hardware. • 32-Bit - A 32-bit operating system allowing the computer to run faster and more efficiently, as well as support 32-bit applications. • Registry - Combines the power of multiple configuration files into two registry files, allowing the system configurations to be located easier. • Memory - Windows 95 has an improved memory handling processes compared to Windows 3.11. • Right mouse click - Allows access and text manipulation by utilizing the right mouse button (right-click) instead of only one button. ADVANTAGE OF WINDOW 95 • Provide better system responsiveness and smoother background processing since it is a 32-bit protected mode operating system. It allows pre-emptive multitasking and multithreading support for Win32 applications. • Protect the user's current investments. Other than Win32 applications, most Windows 3.x applications and DOS applications run on it with faster speed and improved system stability.
• Provide more efficient file and print
support with faster disk/file access and printing. • Provide a newly redesigned graphical interface that is not only easier to learn and use, but more efficient and more customizable. • Improve user friendliness as it allows longer filename support (up to 255 characters). MS-DOS 8.3 filenames are still maintained and tracked by Windows 95 for compatibility with existing Win16 and MS-DOS based applications. • Simplify the switching among multiple programs by means of the task bar and lets the user launch applications and open documents more easily.
• Enhance multimedia support with built-in
support for sound, midi, fast CD-ROMs and digital video playback. • Support better network connectivity with simpler and enhanced network support for NetWare, Windows NT Server, Internet and most major network standards. • Reduce time spent on technical problems and simplify systems management since Windows 95 renders Plug and Play support. DISADVANTAGE OF WINDOWS 95 • Items dragging and dropping works on most folders except the Control Panel, Printers, or Dial-Up Networking folders. This inconsistency in the interface may confuse some users. • Cannot pre-emptively multitask Win16 applications because it uses the same System Virtual Machine (VM) model as in Windows 3.1 to run Win16 applications. • System protection against buggy applications is weak as compared to other 32-bit OS such as Windows NT and OS/2
