1. A square plate is immersed in water with one of the diagonals vertical as shown in
Fig. 3.1. If the width of the plate is 2 m, find the pressure force on one side and the
location of centre of pressure. (Ans. 23.286 kN, 1.721 m)

2. A cubical tank has sides of 1.6 m. It contains an oil of density 900 kg/m 3 for the
upper 1 m depth. The lower remaining part is filled with water. For one vertical
side of the tank, find the total pressure and position of centre of pressure.
(Ans, 18364.32 N, 1.072 m )
3. A triangular plate of height 3.6 m and base 2 m is submerged in is submerged in
water in such a way that its plane makes an angle of 30 with the free water
surface. The base of the plate is parallel to the water surface and at a depth 1.5 m
below the water surface. Find the total pressure force on the plate and the position of
centre of pressure. (Ans. 84.758 kN, 2.475 m)

4. Find the horizontal and vertical components of the force acting on the radial gate AB
as shown in Fig. 3.2. The width of the dam is 2 m. Also find the force P required to
open the gate when (a) the weight of the gate is neglected, and (b) the gate
weight if 25 N and is acting at 1.6 m from the centre.

5. The parabolic gate shown in Fig. 3.3 is 2m wide and pivoted at O; c = 0.25 m-1, D = 2
m, and H = 3 m. Determine (a) the magnitude and line of action of the vertical force
on the gate due to the water, (b) the horizontal force applied at A required to maintain
the gate in equilibrium, and (c) the vertical force applied at A required to maintain the
gate in equilibrium. (Ans: (a) FV = 73.9 kN ; x =1.06m,
(b) FAH = 34.8kN ; (c) FAV = 30.2kN)

7. An open rectangular tank of 4 m long, 3m width and 2 m deep is initially half-filled
with water. If the tank is accelerated horizontally along the longer side at a constant
value of 2.4 m/s2, determine the new position of water surface and the pressure at the
bottom of the tank at the front and rear edges.

(Ans. 5.01 kN/m2, 14.609 kN/m2)

8. An open rectangular tank of 7 m long, 5 m width and 4 m deep contains water to a
height of 2 m. The tank accelerates horizontally along the length. What is the
maximum acceleration that can be given to the tank without causing spill over?
(Ans.5.606 m/s2)

9. A rectangular container, of base dimensions 0.4m X 0.2m and height 0.4m, is filled
with water to a depth of 0.2m; the mass of the empty container is 10 kg. The container
is placed on a plane inclined at 30 0 to the horizontal. If the container slides without
friction, determine the angle of the water surface relative to the horizontal.
(Ans: α = 30 )
