LESSON PLAN

Learning area: Mathematics Year level: 1

Strand/Unit Title: Measurement Time: 12:15- 1:00
Lesson topic: Length Lesson: 8

AIM: The aim of this lesson is for students to measure and compare the lengths of objects
using informal units of measurement.
ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD: Students measure and compare lengths using informal
units of measurement.
CONTENT DESCRIPTORS: Measure and compare the lengths of objects using uniform
informal units (ACMMG019).

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Objective: Students will individually complete tasks where they will measure and compare
lengths of objects using two different informal units; unifix cubes and match sticks.

Know: Students will know the requirements for accurate measurement i.e. use a baseline, no
spaces or overlapping.
Understand: Students will understand that in order to compare the lengths, the unit of
measurement must be the same size.
Do: Students will be able to measure and compare different lengths using informal units.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
This lesson is used as a summative assessment and therefore students will be marked against
the assessment rubric which is linked with the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards.

Observation and note taking will also be conducted throughout the lesson to assess:
> Which students are unable to measure lengths using the correct techniques.
> Which students can measure lengths using the correct techniques.
> Which students are extending themselves by measuring in centimeters for the last activity.
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS

5 mins INTRODUCTION (whole class on floor) RESOURCES

As a class, we will brainstorm through discussion X25 Activity booklets
what we have learnt in this measurement unit: Unifix cubes
What does it mean if we are measuring the length Matchsticks
of something? Rulers
Why do we need to measure?
When would we use measuring?
What units of measurement can we use to measure
something?
What do we need to remember when measuring?
- Measure from the baseline
- Do not leave spaces
- Do not overlap

10 mins EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class on floor)

Introduce the booklets the students will be
completing.
Explain each page:
The first page is measuring 3 objects with unifix
cubes and then ordering the lengths from shortest
to longest.
The second page is measuring 3 different objects
with match sticks and then ordering them from
shortest to longest.
The third page they do not have to complete but can
attempt if they want to as it is measuring the same
3 objects but in centimeters using a ruler.
25 mins EXPLORATION/PRACTICE
Students will complete this activity independently.
Limited teacher help will be available as this task is
designed to assess the student’s abilities however
appropriate guidance will be given when necessary.

Differentiation
The main two activities in this lesson are not
differentiated by readiness levels as it is being used
as a summative assessment and therefore assessing
all students against the same task and criteria.
The discussion at the beginning of the lesson is
intended to support students, by reminding them
what they need to remember when measuring, to
ensure they go into the activity with a clear
understanding of the task.
The task is designed as a booklet rather than one
large piece of paper so the students can focus on
one task at a time and not get overwhelmed.
The unit of measurements are units the students
have worked with before therefore providing
familiarity.

Extension
An optional extra activity has been added to the
task to extend the students who are at a higher
readiness level. It requires them to measure in
centimeters using a ruler which is not yet expected
of Year 1’s
5 mins CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect on
floor)
The lesson will conclude with a class discussion on
the floor.
Students will share what they found challenging
about the activity.
