Selection Tools
Rectangular Marquee
• Select the Marquee Tool by clicking
on top-left icon in the toolbar. Take
a good look at your icon and notice
the black arrow on its lower-right
corner. That means that additional
options can be selected by holding
down the left-mouse over the icon.
Now four kinds of Marquee are
shown. Select the one named
Rectangular Marquee.
Elliptical Marquee
• Let’s go back to the Marquee tools
and select the Elliptical Marquee
Tool. Do the same to our Options
Bar and image, click anywhere in
the image and drag the mouse to
the other end. Notice that this time,
our Selection Edges show an
ellipse. This is perfect for selecting
round and elliptical objects like the
moon and discs.
Single Row Marquee and
Single Column Marquee
• These two selection tools are
different from the first two because
you cannot control the size of the
selection, just the position. By
clicking on the image with one of
these two tools, you can select a line
of pixels from your image. Dragging
it will only change its location.
Lasso Tool
• This selection tool is actually quite tricky
for beginners. Try using the Lasso Tool on
our image. Click and drag on an image’s
outline and try to trace out the whole
image. Once you release the mouse, the
selection will close up. If you are using a
conventional mouse, chances are your
selection is crude. Not that easy, right? The
Lasso Tool works by following the
coordinates of your cursor, so without a
steady hand, you will your selection a little
shaky on some points. Though we can
select the form of the statue better, let’s try
tools more suited for the job.
Polygonal Lasso Tool
• First click on an edge of the statue,
let’s say the topmost. Drag your
cursor to the rightmost portion of
the statue and click it. Notice the
thin line that appeared? Now your
selection isn’t done yet. Click on
another edge of the statue, and
another, until you’ve encased the
statue in the thin line.
Magnetic Lasso Tool
• Lasso tools provide versatility
because of the direct control of the
cursor, but the Magnetic Lasso Tool
doesn’t just give you direct control,
instead it reads the contours on its
own while following the direction of
your cursor.
Magic Wand
• Among all the tools we have
used so far, what seems
easiest to use for this image,
the Magnetic Lasso Tool right?
Yes, it is easy to apply but
none can be faster for this job
than the Magic Wand.
Quick Selection Tool
• The Quick Selection Tool is like a
using the Magic Wand only with
this, it uses the properties of
brushing and automatically reads
the contrast and those near it. Try
using the Quick Selection Tool to
see the difference.
Crop Tool
• This tool is applied similar to
the Rectangular Marquee
Tool, but it deletes everything
in your document window
outside the selected area,
including parts of the
document window itself.
