Course Description:
This course presents a survey of computer applications and their use in the health technology
fields. This course will allow students in the health technologies field to learn how to interact
with computers and software application packages. Students will become skilled in the use of
Windows 10, Office 2019: PowerPoint Word, Excel, and Access.
Discussion of the major components of a computer, an introduction to software application
packages including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and database, and an exposure
to a personal computer operating system.
Hands-on experience includes: using Windows 10 operating system, a word processor,
designing and implementing spreadsheets, designing and implementing a database, and
producing presentations.

Important Dates:
Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6:00pm – 7:00pm IRC 107 an on-campus class orientation. Your
attendance is required. Bring both textbooks to the orientation.

Grading:
All grades will be posted in Canvas. To see your grades, click on Grades in canvas.

Grades will be calculated as follows:


50% - 4 Lecture Exams
35% - 13 Lab Assignments:
15% - 12 Homework Assignments

Homework Assignments (15%):


There will be twelve (12) homework assignments. Homework assignments can be found
by clicking on Modules. Homework will consist of assigned multiple choice and
true/false questions found at the end of every chapter along with a critical thinking
question, which should be answered in AT LEAST one paragraph (minimum of 5
sentences). Showing comparison tables are also acceptable with at least 4-5 points
stated in each column.
Lecture Exams (50%):
Four lecture exams will consist of multiple-choice, true-false, and fill-in questions based
on the material covered in the textbook chapters. The wording of the exam questions will
be the same as in the textbook. A sample test will be made available prior to the first
exam. There will four lecture exams covering material from the lecture textbook. All
exams will be delivered online via Canvas under the correct Week in Modules. They will
be available for two days: all day on some Monday (12am) through Tuesday
(11:55pm). You will be able to log in any time on those two days to take the exam
however; the exam has to be completed by Tuesday evening at 11:55pm. You will
receive one attempt at the exam and the exam is timed for 90 minutes. There will be NO
makeups for the lecture exams unless it is a true emergency or an extreme
circumstance. In both of these cases, you must provide documentation verifying the
emergency or circumstance that caused you to miss the exam. Other than those two
exceptions, if you miss an exam, you will receive a zero on that exam.

Lab Assignments~ (35%):


There will be 13 lab assignments from the spiral textbook. The assignment exercises
measure how well you have mastered the topics in those particular assigned
sections. The Guided Projects are practice exercises, which are provided for you to learn
the material in order to prepare for that particular assignment. You are only graded on
the INDEPENDENT PROJECTS as the submitted assignment.

Letter grades will be determined as follows:


A 93 - 100
A- 90 - 92
B+ 87 - 89
B 83 - 86
B- 80 - 82
C+ 77 - 79
C 70 - 76
D 60 - 69
F below 60

Late Policy:
No HW, Lab assignments/exams will be accepted late.

Cheating Policy:
With online learning, just as with face-to-face traditional classes, students are expected to
adhere to Middlesex County College's Integrity Policy and behave in an ethical and moral
manner while completing all assignments and exams in this course. The work you hand in
must be your own and cheating is inexcusable. Anyone caught cheating or attempting to
cheat will receive no credit on the assignment and a second attempt will most likely result
in an "F" for the course. Depending on the circumstances of the incident, Student Code of
Conduct charges may be filed.

If you need to use a computer at the college:


You MUST use one of the PCs in a Computer Science computer room to work on the lab
assignments:
JLC222 and JLC224
IRC107, IRC108, IRC111, IRC113, IRC114 and IRC115

IRC 115 is an OPEN LAB from 9am-9pm (Mon.-Fri.) – bring your student ID to
enter the room to work on assignments.
The other PCs situated around the Edison campus might not be upgraded to our CS
computers.
Student Technical Assistants (STAs) are available to help you with your assignments
whenever the Computer Science computer rooms are open. The STA is located in the in the
open Lab is IRC 115. No classes are scheduled in IRC 115- you must show your
student ID to enter the open lab to work on your assignments.
