We've been working on this for the past six months and we're so excited to finally
be show casing Beneath It All as our first show that we've directed and produced
from scratch. Through the journey of Beneath It All, we've come across so many
road bumps and hardships but the idea of 'giving up' never came across our minds
as we felt so drive and motivated to work on this project. On the other hand, we
had the lovely opportunity to see so many 'hidden talents' in British School Jakarta,
even though a minority are not in the performing cast or backstage crew – we feel
so happy to have met new people and have created friendships through this
project. We feel super thankful for all that's happened, good or bad.

As you're reading this right now, you're currently in the theatre we've been working
in ever since March of 2019. To however and whatever that will happen in the
show tonight, we all believe it'll all come from our hard work and dedication
towards this musical and story. Thank you to our wonderful cast, backstage team,
Ms Fisher and Mrs Caine, Pak Tedy, Pak Eko, Pak Luis, Pak Oscar, and the rest
of the performing arts faculty for being so patient and supportive of our show!

We hope you can take something out of this show, and most importantly – sit
back, relax and enjoy the show!

Sincerely,
Sascha, Andhira, Tori and Abi

DIRECTOR'S NOTE
SYNOPSIS
ACT 1
Lacey Feldstein is starting senior year with a clean slate. Growing up with social anxiety, she's
had a hard time fitting in the social hierarchy of Jakarta Prep School.

Her best friends; Michael Cooper and Nellie Anderson introduce Lacey's story as they invite the
audience to come along and unravel the story together ('A Cautionary Tale'). Lacey is awakened
to find Michael in her room so he can pick her up for school. The two reunite after a long summer
holiday with a quick round of their favourite game (‘Two Player Game’).

Lacey, left alone in the hallway, prepares herself for the monstrosities of high school (‘Beautiful’).
As she heads to math class, change — and possibly love — is in the air as the new kid walks in,
Andy Watson. Capturing the eyes of every boy and girl in that room, Lacey experiences what we
call, love at first sight (‘I Can Hear The Bells’). She steps out her comfort zone for this new boy
and actually… talks to him (‘Beautiful (Reprise)’). Snapped out of her daydream as Ms Noelle
Gray, introduces herself to the class. Jealousy fills the air as Nellie observes each of every move
and word exchanged between Lacey and Andy from the back of the class (‘Stupid With Love’).

Lacey completely forgets about her plans with Michael, leaving him disappointed. Lacey feels
gutted parting ways with Andy for the day ('Fight For Me') but the moon and stars align somehow,
when Andy offers Lacey to come over to study at his home. They got to know each other as they
'studied'. Things escalated in a matter of moments as sparks fly between the two.

Lacey asked her mother, Mallory, if she could stay past her curfew to hang out with Michael to
finish their history project, a request Mallory hesitantly accepted. Little did she know, Lacey was
off to the new kid’s party, where she calls Michael to drag him along with her. Despite the two of
them being complete introverts. As the call ends, Michael is left bitter, as he imagines a scenario,
where he could tell Lacey everything and pour out all his bottled up feelings for her (‘If I Could Tell
Her’).

Stood in front of Andy's home. Michael is stunned to see what Lacey is wearing, looking far from
herself. As they entered the house in shock, Michael reminded Lacey to be cautious. Catching the
eye of Andy, as this love story moves forward, He offers Lacey into his room, leaving Michael
alone, standing in between wasted strangers. In Andy’s room, the two lovebirds confess their
feelings to each other. Until he asks Lacey to just be in an ‘open’ relationship ('You Matter To
Me').

After her encounter with Andy, she rushes out of his room to take a breather and goes to go to the
bathroom. Lacey's heart drops as she finds Michael inside the bathroom. Lacey questions his
presence as he reveals that he doesn’t actually want to be at that party. He confronts her and tells
her his concerns ever since Andy came into the picture. Lacey gets defensive and storms off
leaving Michael alone with his thoughts (‘Michael In The Bathroom’).
ACT 2
Things have drastically changed in the halls of Jakarta Prep School. Especially for Lacey and her
new found popularity. However, kids at school haven’t been too kind to Lacey. Rumours passing
on social media about the couple were intense. Watching afar are Michael and Nellie, Lacey’s two
forgotten friends.

Michael is seen waiting by a bus stop, without hesitation calls Lacey out of the blue as she passes
by to wait for Andy. He causes a small argument between the two. Giving up hope of trying to win
their friendship back, Michael reminds Lacey that she is living a lie and leaves Lacey alone. Nellie
and her posse, with no remorse, speaks their truth (‘I’d Rather Be Me’). Lacey's mind start to
clutter with negative thoughts. Feeling alone despite her new “friends” and social status. She
realises its not that much better up there. In the cafeteria, Michael sits across the room from
Lacey, separated by popularity. He realises that his feelings for her never really faded away.
Nellie encourages Michael to do something about it if he really loved her ('Long Way Home').

Mallory hears a knock from outside her house and opens the door to be greeted by Michael. She
asks him how things have been going in regards to the history project, leaving him in utter
confusion leaving him no choice but to reveal the ugly truth to her. Mallory suggests Michael to go
home as she thinks of a way to get the truth out of Lacey.

Later that night, Lacey sneaks back home to find her mother in the living room. Demanding that
Lacey tell her the truth. Feeling mortified that her daughter had been lying to her all this time. The
two clash as Lacey ends the fight in full offense to her own mother just so she could get out of the
situation. Mallory stands in the living room alone in dismay ('Good For You.’).

Lacey has had enough of it all. Wanting to bring her old self back. Immersed in her own mind, an
imaginary figure of herself appears in the darkness. Her own conscience tries to talk herself out of
it. Like her ID and Superego, The angel and devils of her conscience. She wants one thing but
also the other, knowing full well she only has to choose one path ('One Perfect Moment’).

Lacey finds herself wanting to apologise to her mother. After what felt like years, she feels she
can finally open up to her. What felt like the heavy weight of emotional baggage on their
shoulders, lifted up. It wasn't like so anymore ('So Big, So Small').

Months have passed by, and the seniors of Jakarta Prep School have graduated. Lacey still lives
at home with her family. Trying to make the most she can before leaving the country for college.
Meanwhile, Michael is all set to leave to study far from home. He awaits by a bus stop a few
blocks away from his home. Word got around, and Lacey catches up with Michael to say
goodbye. The two finally reunite after months of silence. Lacey finally apologises for all that's
happened in the past. Michael forgives her but reminds Lacey to let it all go and move on. Nellie
interrupts the two as she drags her suitcase to leave for college as well. Michael, Lacey, and
Nellie – whom were once the best of friends may have gone through a rocky phase, but in the end
realised who the real ones are.

Michael reminds Lacey that the incidents that occurred, had to happen. It taught them how to
grow up, and he makes sure that even when she is still healing – she is never alone. None of us
are alone ('You Will Be Found').

A MESSAGE FROM:
THE DIRECTORS
ABIGAIL PURBA
From a director's point of view, I’m proud of the way the cast has managed to make
friends, enjoy the company of each other and share the stressful and funny moments
together. Safe to say that this was definitely one of the most challenging but once in a
lifetime experiences that I think all of us have learnt more about ourselves. Learning to
know what is friendly and professional, and what is to be taken personal or not.

This is a very small, diverse group that we’ve never seen really happen in musicals,
where people who’ve never taken drama or music have had the willingness actually work
and improve on their skills. I am happy to be one of the first students to lead a student led
musical, with the help of the very supportive advice from Ms Fischer and Ms Caine.
Learning how to lead, be responsible and (to an extent) be strict, was probably the most
challenging skills I have developed through the process of producing the musical.
Teaching other students to sing with additional emotions and choreography was the most
favorite things to do as being a director as you can improvise and create something
beautiful, and as the cast is able to recreate that. In the end, I will never forget this
moment as I leave my mark in BSJ, along with the other amazing directors I am grateful
to work with. This has been a wonderful opportunity, and to everyone who has worked
hard on this journey within this musical, Thank you.
I was first introduced to ‘Beneath It All’ when Sascha sent me a photo on Snapchat captioning it
‘Hey! I know you are into musical theatre and things like that so I just wanted to let you know that
I’m working on my own and I was wondering if you would help me direct it!’. I instantly replied
saying ‘Of course!’. Musical theatre is just so fun and to be part of a student led initiative that
celebrates that makes me beyond grateful and happy. This is also my first time co-directing a
show ever so to say that I am proud of what we have created together, student directors, cast,
ensemble and backstage crew, is an understatement.

The amount of ideas and excitement that we were able to put into this show just makes me look
back and realise how creativity just manifests itself in truly wonderful ways. Words can’t even
begin to describe how much love I have for Tori, Abi and Sascha and how proud I am that we
were able to work together to produce a show that is so special to us. This being my first ever
directed show, it has proved to become more of a challenge than I thought it would be, but I
honestly would not have it any other way. Over the course of the development, we have become
so close and I am so thankful for each one of my new sisters :’). There have been times where it
has been extremely overwhelming however, we all provide each other with that sister support and
that it what I love about the dynamic of our little director group. I also thank the cast for their
willingness to learn and come to rehearsals and be part of the challenging, rigorous but fun
process. I also want to thank the backstage crew for doing all the tasks that we asked of them too!

ANDHIRA VASWANI

The new friends that I have made as well as the friendships that I have strengthened throughout this whole
process has left me so happy and just in awe of everyone's talents and the skills that they possess. To see
how everyone has evolved in their skills just amazes me and it makes me look forward to what they will be
able to do in the future. Acting in the show has also opened my eyes to the capabilities that i didn't even
know had in the first place! I am also very thankful to the Performing Arts Faculty notably Ms Fisher and Ms
Caine as they allowed to us take on the musical and have been so helpful with advice how to direct and
how to make each aspect, ranging from set to just organisation of the cast and rehearsals, better. I am so
excited to show the audiences what we have created. To show them the story of Lacey Feldstein, an
anxious teenager swamped with pressure from her family, friends and society trying to get through to the
next day, a story that they hopefully some people might relate to on a personal level! To my directors, look
at what we have created together, we finally did it and I could be any more proud of you my loves! To the
cast and crew, your talents never cease to amaze me. To the performing arts faculty and our sponsors,
thank you for playing the most important part and helping us bring this whole story to life.
TORI TRAPNES
Moving into British School Jakarta just last year has given me countless amounts of
opportunities to use my creativity and put it to good use. As a dancer and performing arts
student, I knew that I wanted to be involved in any theatre performance. ‘Beneath It All’
was an amazing opportunity that I took when Sascha briefly talked to me about the idea
summer of 2018. Throughout this whole experience, i’ve learned not only more about
myself and what i’m capable of doing, but also learning to be responsible of the
individuals I work with. Growing up, the stage has always been my home. Whether that
would be in a theatrical production, dancing, singing in a choir, band or presenting. It’s
something I am deeply passionate about.
When we started “Beneath It All”, us directors had a huge amount of ideas in mind and at
first was very overwhelming because we had everything under control but as time went
by we learned to handle and see things in a different picture. I’ve known Abi and Sascha
for 6 years and Andhira for 2. We knew how to balance each others energies and make
everything work. And I wouldn’t change anything. I have seen so much growth from the
cast, especially to those who auditioned for the first time and has never been on stage
before. It makes me feel like a proud mother.

To my girls, thank you. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. Thank you for crying
with me when we were so stressed about set design and cast rehearsals and also
laughing with me when there’s theatre tea. This whole journey would not be the same
without you three. I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of you. To my cast, you’ve
made me a.k.a mother soo proud. Thank you for showing up to rehearsals on days where
you’d rather sleep in and for being committed no matter what. It’s been a rough year but
WE DID IT! I wish you all the best and I can’t wait to see more from you throughout the
next few years on stage. Take all this experience as a learning opportunity.
To the audience, I hope you enjoy this show more than I do. This production means a lot
to me as it’s my last one before graduating. I hope you learn that it’s important to always
be true to yourself and being aware of the people that will always be there for you.
Thank you, next.
Beneath It All has been one hectic rollercoaster ride but I’m thankful for each second of it.
It really sucks that everything that’s been built up to this point is coming to a close. This
story may have been more suited towards audiences of a younger age but I personally
feel the messages the show teaches can be impactful to anyone of any age. There will
always be a time in your life where you feel alone. Despite having a good ‘support
system’ or ‘life’, sometimes we’ll feel that certain way. And that’s okay. We were all once
a Lacey, Michael, or a Nellie in our lives. I hope anyone or everyone who watched the
show can realise and sympathise with these characters within the story.

Thank you Tori, Andhira, and Abi for being so patient with me. I’m so glad I got to
become closer with the three of you these past six months. I’ll miss the laughs and even
when we’d kind of get on each others throats because we’re so stressed. Overall, it’s
been great getting to work with you three to create this form of art that we all treasure so
much. A big thank you for the cast and crew of Beneath It All! You guys kicked ass.
Especially to the performing arts faculty in school, thank you so much for being so
supportive from the beginning. Thank you Ms Fisher and Mrs Caine for helping us grow
as theatre makers. Even in those frustrating times, your advices have helped so much. I’ll
miss every single aspect of this show, the people, rehearsals, and mostly bringing this
story from vision to life. Despite some detours in our journey, we never came close to
thinking of giving up and it makes me so happy knowing that. I feel so stoked to show
people what we’ve been working on for the past six months. And whoever you are
reading this right now, I hope this inspires you. Peace out Lacey, you been good to me.
