UNIT – I
1. a) Differentiate between thermal conductivity and heat transfer CO1 (04)
co-efficient.
b) Derive general 3-dimensional conduction equation in Cartesian CO1 (10)
Co-ordinate.
c) For a given electrical application copper wire of 3mm diameter are CO1 (06)
insulated by an insulating material of 0.6mm thickness. If k= 0.12
W/mk for the insulating material and the film coefficient between the
surrounding air and the surface of insulation is 40W/m 2k with a fixed
temperature between the air and wire surface,find the percentage
change in the rate of heat transfer if the insulation is increased to 2mm.
2 a) Derive an expression for the temperature distribution and the rate of CO1 (10)
heat transfer for a hollow cylinder.
b) A plane wall of thickness L is made of material whose thermal CO1 (10)
conductivity k varies with temperature according to the relation
k=k0(1+ αT) where k0 is constant and T is the temperature. Starting
from fundamentals, derive an expression for temperature distribution
when two surfaces of wall are maintained at temperatures T 1 and T2 and
without heat generation.
UNIT – II
3. a) Derive an expression for the temperature distribution and rate of heat CO2 (10)
transfer from a fin of uniform cross section. Neglect the heat transfer
from the end of the fin.
b) Aluminum fins of rectangular profile are attached to a plane wall with CO2 (10)
5mm spacing . The fins have thickness of 1mm, length 10mm and
thermal conductivity 200W/mk and the fins dissipate heat by convection
into an ambient at 400C with a surface heat transfer coefficient of
50W/m2k. Determine:
i) The fin efficiency
ii) The heatloss from the plane wall per squremeter of the wall surface.
Neglect heat loss from the fin tip.
4. a) Obtain expression for instantaneous heat transfer and total heat CO2 (10)
transfer for lumped heat analysis treatment of heat conduction
problems.
b) A metallic sphere of radius 10mm is initially at a uniform temperature of CO2 (10)
3350C. It is quenched in water bath at 200C with h=6000W/m2C.
Determine the time taken for the centre temperature to reach 50 0C.
Also determine surface temperature when the centre temperature is

500C. Take Cp= 1000J/kg k=20W/moC α = 6.66X10 -6m2/s
ρ =3000kg/m3.

5. a) Explain the development of hydro dynamic boundary layer for flow over CO3 (10)
a flat surface.
b) Define the following: CO3 (04)
i) Drag force ii) Drag coefficient.
c) A 2.5kW plate heater of 10cmX20cm is held vertically (with its 20cm CO3 (06)
side vertical) in a water bath at 40 0C. Assuming heat transfer is only
due to convection, find the steady state temperature attained by the
heater. Using the relation Nu= 0.13 (GrPr)0.33 and take β= 4.15X10-4/oC
6. a) Derive an expression for forced convection heat transfer interms of CO3 (10)
dimensionless parameters using dimension analysis.
b) Water at 300C enters 1cm diameter tube with a velocity of 1m/s . the CO3 (10)
tube surface is maintained at 900C. find the tube length required to heat
water at 500C.
UNIT – IV
7. a) Derive an expression for effectiveness by NTU method for parallel flow CO4 (10)
heat exchangers.
b) Water enters a counterflow double pipe heat exchanger at 15 0C flowing CO4 (10)
at a rate of 1300kg/hr. It is heated by a oil(C p=2000J/kgK) flowing at
the rate of 550kg/hr from an outlet temperature of 94 0C for an area
1cm2 and overall heat transfer co-efficient of 1075W/m 2k. Determine
the total heat transfer and outlet temperature of water and oil. Take
Cp of water 4186J/kgK.
UNIT – V
9. a) State and explain Fick’s law of diffusion. CO5 (04)
b) Define the following terms: CO5 (06)
i) Molal concentration ii) Mole fraction iii) Mass fraction.
c) A 30mm deep pan is filled with water to a level of 15 mm and is CO5 (10)
exposed to dry air at 400C. Assuming the mass diffusivity as 0.25X 10 -4
m2/s, calculate the time required for all the water to evaporate.
