TASK 05-51-14-200-803-A
Inspection of the Aircraft after a Bird Strike
WARNING: PUT THE SAFETY DEVICES AND THE WARNING NOTICES IN POSITION BEFORE YOU
START A TASK ON OR NEAR:
- THE FLIGHT CONTROLS
- THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES
- THE LANDING GEAR AND THE RELATED DOORS
- COMPONENTS THAT MOVE.
MOVEMENT OF COMPONENTS CAN KILL OR CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR CAN
CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE PROBES ON THE GROUND. THE PROBES CAN
STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME AND WILL BURN YOU.
NOTE: It is not easy to find and see signs of bird strike after time and/or bad weather.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 05-51-14-941-051-A
A. General Information
(1) Description of the Inspection Procedure
(a) The inspections are divided into three steps:
1 First step: Walk-around Visual Inspection
The first step is a walk-around visual inspection of all aircraft surfaces. This is to find signs of
bird strike and/or damage (identification of impacted areas).
NOTE: If you do not find signs of bird strike during the first step, it is not necessary to do the
other steps, the aircraft can go back into operation.
3 Open the Nose Landing Gear (NLG) doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-22-00-010-001) .
4 Install the safety devices on the NLG doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-002) .
Subtask 05-51-14-866-056-A
D. Extension of the Flight Control Surfaces
(1) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002) .
(2) Pressurize the aircraft hydraulic systems
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-863-003) , (Ref. AMM TASK 29-23-00-863-001) and
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-24-00-863-001) .
(3) Set the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS) pitch-trim control wheel to the full aircraft nose-up
position.
(4) Fully extend the flaps and the slats (Ref. AMM TASK 27-50-00-866-008) and (Ref. AMM TASK 27-
80-00-866-004) .
Subtask 05-51-14-860-056-A
E. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
(1) Depressurize the aircraft hydraulic systems
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001) .
(2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT) in position near the radome and the aft passenger/crew
door.
NOTE: As an alternative tool, you can use a STEPLADDER 3,0 M (9.8 FT) to get a minimum height
of 3 m (10 ft.).
NOTE: All the necessary inspections are visual unless the text gives other instructions. Operators can
refer to the Non-destructive Testing Manual (NTM) and use non-destructive procedures.
(1) If there is damage to the aircraft structure, refer to the Structural Repair Manual (SRM). The SRM has
the approved damage limits and repair procedures.
(2) If the pilot gave a report of:
· Engine stall or
· Engine parameter change/exceeded or
· Smells in the air conditioning outlet.
Do the related step for the inspection of the engine (refer to the inspection
paragraph 4.W. Inspection of the Engines and/or Nacelles).
Subtask 05-51-14-210-068-A
B. First Step: Walk-Around Visual Inspection
(Ref. Fig. First Step - Walk-Around Inspection Pattern from the Ground SHEET 1)
(Ref. Fig. First Step - Walk-Around Inspection Pattern from the Cabin Windows and Platform SHEET 1)
(1) For a better walk-around visual inspection, do the inspection at the checkpoints and while you move
from one checkpoint to the other.
The points shown give the checkpoints for the sequence of the walk-around visual inspection.
(2) Do the walk-around visual inspection with a good luminosity level (daylight or hangar light).
(3) Do the walk-around visual inspection of all the aircraft surfaces.
Do the walk-around visual inspection from:
· The ground
· The cabin windows
· An ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT) near the radome and the aft passenger/crew doors.
(a) Do a check for:
· Signs of impact, scratches, dents, damaged paintwork or other damage during the GVI of the
radome
· Impact damage or signs of bird strike, for example organic material (i.e. blood spatter, bird
remains, feathers etc.)
· Fuel, oil or hydraulic leaks
· Missing parts.
(b) Record the area(s) with signs of bird strike or damage.
(Ref. Fig. First Step - Table for Inspection from the Ground)
(Ref. Fig. First Step - Table for Inspection from the Cabin Windows and Platform SHEET 1)
(c) You can record the damage you find and the location on the damage reporting sheet.
(Ref. Fig. Damage Reporting Sheet)
NOTE: If you do not find signs of bird strike or damage during the first step (walk-around visual
inspection), the aircraft can go back into operation.
Subtask 05-51-14-615-050-B
C. Second Step: Cleaning of Bird Strike Signs
(1) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 12M (40 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position (if necessary) adjacent to the
signs of bird strike or damaged area(s).
(2) The persons that do the cleaning must put on BOOT - RUBBER, GLOVES - RUBBER, GOGGLES -
PROTECTIVE and OVERALL WITH HOOD - WATERPROOF.
(3) Before cleaning, use a marking pen to identify the damaged area.
(4) If bird ingestion into the engine occurred:
· Pieces of bird can be used to determine the bird species. Contact CFM for more information.
(5) Collect organic material for analysis.
NOTE: If you must determine the bird species because of the local regulations, Airbus recommends
that you do the steps that follow. If not, remove the bird remains and do the cleaning step im-
mediately.
(a) For large pieces of bird, remove different types of feathers (breast, back, wing, tail) and put them
in a re-sealable BAG - PLASTIC.
(b) For small pieces of bird feathers and/or tissue, remove them and put them in a re-sealable BAG -
PLASTIC.
(c) For blood smears or tissue on the surface, remove them with a paper towel, gauze or alcohol
wipe and put them in a re-sealable BAG - PLASTIC. Include the material that you used for the
removal.
NOTE: It is not permitted to use water to remove blood smears or tissue because water causes
mold. Mold causes damage to the material necessary to determine the bird species.
(d) Seal the BAG - PLASTIC and attach a label with the date, aircraft registration number and area
that the remains came from.
(e) Send the BAG - PLASTIC with the collected bird remains to the nearest local airport-operations
wildlife-administrator to determine the species.
(6) Remove the remaining organic material.
(a) Put all the remaining pieces of bird, GLOVES - RUBBER and other items you will discard in
another BAG - PLASTIC. Seal the BAG - PLASTIC and discard it correctly.
(b) Wash your hands with soap and water.
(7) Do a manual cleaning (Ref. AMM TASK 12-21-11-615-002) .
(8) Make sure that the pen marks are not removed.
** ON A/C ALL
NOTE: It can be necessary to do a special preparation before some inspections (e.g. Inspection of
the Radome). The inspection preparation is given in the subtask immediately before the re-
lated inspection table. When necessary, the subtask immediately after the related inspection
table gives the circuit breakers you must close.
NOTE: You can refer to the tables that you wrote during the first-step walk-around inspection (and
damage reporting sheet for accurate damage location) to know the title of the paragraph you
must refer to.
