1 Automatic Fingerprint Analysis

1.1 Basic
The first step of a measurement using the complete Fingerprint method is to
compare the actual spectrum with the stored spectra of Fingerprint Reference
Materials. After the instrument has selected the reference material which best
fits with the actual spectrum, the specific source parameters and calibration
data for this Reference material method are loaded. The measurement is con-
tinued with these settings and the quantitative analysis and/or the grade name
are displayed. A full fingerprint analysis takes less than 5 seconds.
The order of the elements displayed on the screen depends on the selected
Reference Material method.

1.2 Mode Selection

To set the Fingerprint mode select “Tasks”, a task out of the list and then “Edit -
General”.

There are three different modes possible for “Fingerprinting”.

“Single measurement” (Single)
Switch on the instrument and the Fingerprint method starts automatically (last
method used on the instrument). Or select it manually out of the program list.
Press the START button (sample probe) to start the “Fingerprinting”. Anytime
you press the START button the “Fingerprinting” starts again.

Averages for documentation are not possible, because with each measurement
another Reference Material Method with a different set of elements may be
loaded.

“Full automatic” (Full)
The same as “Single measurement” mode, but the “Fingerprinting” is only done
for the first measurement or after each average. The Fingerprint method can be
started manually from the menu „Fingerp.“. The measurement times for all 2nd,
3rd, … measurements are the short ones used traditionally in arc mode
(approx. 4 seconds).

“Semi automatic” (Half)
The same as “Full automatic” mode, but the “Fingerprinting” is only done for the
first measurement. The Fingerprint method can be started manually from the
menu „Fingerp.“. The measurement times for all 2nd, 3rd, etc. measurements
are the short ones used traditionally in arc mode (approx. 4 seconds).

“No Loading”
After measuring the sample the base element (and Reference Material
Method), which best fits with the actual spectrum are selected and displayed. If
no respective method is installed only the base element is displayed. In both
case no analyses is shown on the screen.
We recommend using the adapter with silver disc electrode (star-shaped) for
the Fingerprint method. To avoid memory effects and to get the best results,
please rotate the disc for each “Fingerprinting”.
Working in the “Semi automatic” mode, a new silver rod electrode for the one-
time “Fingerprinting” can be chosen. When using the “Full” or “Semi automatic”
mode, remember to stay with the chosen Reference Material method for the fol-
lowing measurements
It may not be the best performing Reference Material method, because the
"Fingerprinting" is only done for the first measurement and after each average
respectively just once at the beginning.

1.3 Perform Fingerprint

When the Fingerprint method has been used before the instrument was
switched off, it will start automatically when restarting the instrument. For a sin-
gle measurement you can also select the Fingerprint method manually from the
menu „Fingerp.“ in the Measure Window.

Perform a measurement and the analysis appears on the screen.

Depending on the Fingerprint mode been selected, the “Fingerprinting” will be
repeated or will only be done for the first measurement (and after each aver-
age).
If no Reference Material Method can be assigned the instrument stops with a
message that tells you, which base element is found.
Remember: When measurements in the Fingerprint mode, the arc switched off
briefly - for the duration of Fingerprint arithmetic operations - and restarted.
With this Function the battery energy is optimally used. Guarantee that the posi-
tion of the sample probe and sample does not change to each other. Change
the position can reflect into incorrect results of measurement.
