Avogadro Law (V - n Relationship)

It states that equal volumes of all gases under the same conditions of temperature
and pressure contain equal number of molecules.

STP denotes temperature of 0°C (273.15 K), pressure of 1 atm (101.325 kPa).
One mole of any gas or a combination of gases occupies 22.413996 L of volume at
STP.

SATP conditions means 298.15 K and 1 bar (i.e., exactly 10 5 Pa). At SATP (1 bar
and 298.15 K), the molar volume of an ideal gas is 24.789 L mol–1.
Ideal Gas Equation

A gas that follows Boyle’s law, Charles’ law and Avogadro law strictly is called an
ideal gas.
Example The initial volume of a gas cylinder is 750.0 mL. If the pressure of gas inside
the cylinder changes from 840.0 mmHg to 360.0 mmHg, the final volume of
the gas will be
(a) 1.750 L
(b) 3.60 L
(c) 4.032 L
(d) 7.50 L

Example SO2 at STP contained in a flask was replaced by O2 under identical
conditions of pressure, temperature and volume. Then, the weight of O2
will be _______ of SO2.
Density and Molar Mass of a Gaseous Substance
Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures

It states that the total pressure exerted by the mixture of non-reactive gases is
equal to the sum of the partial pressures of individual gases.
Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures
Example What is the partial pressure of each gas- red, yellow and green, if total
pressure inside the container is 600 mm Hg.
Example Which of the following gas mixture is not applicable for Dalton’s law of partial
pressure?
(a) SO2 and Cl2
(b) CO2 and N2
(c) CO and CO2
(d) CO and N2
Example The partial pressure of hydrogen in a flask containing 2 gm of H2 and
32g of SO2 is:
(a) PT/16
(b) PT/9
(c) 2PT/3
(d) PT/8
Example Equal volumes of 2 gases which don’t react together are enclosed in separate
vessels. Their pressures are 10 mm and 400 mm respectively. If the two vessels
are joined together, then what will be the pressure of the resulting mixture?
(T= Constant)
(a) 120 mm
(b) 500 mm
(c) 1000 mm
(d) 205 mm
