Course Title: Readings in Philippine History

Credit Units: 3

Contact Hours: 4 hours Lecture (14 weeks = 56 hours)


Fri & Sat 8:00 – 10:00AM

Course Description:

The course analyzes Philippine history from multiple perspective through the lens of selected primary
sources coming from various disciplines and of different genres. Students are given opportunities to
analyze the author’s background and amin arguments, compare different point of view, identify biases
and examine evidences presented in the document. The discussions will tackle traditional topics in
history and other interdisciplinary cultural, social, scientific and religion history. Priority is given to
primary materials that could help the students develop their analytical and cuunicative skills. The end
goal is to develop the historical and critical conscoussness of the students so that they will become
versatile, ariculate, broad-minded, morally upright and responsible citizens.

Topics:

A. Meaning and relevance of history; Distinction of primary and secondary sources;; external
and internal criticism; Repositories of primary sources; Different kinds of primary sources.
B. Content and contextual analysis of selected primary sources; Identification of the historical
importance of the text and Examination of the author’s main argument and point of view
C. One past but many histories: controversies and conflicting views in the Philippine history
D. Social, political, economic and cultural issues in Philippines history.
E. Mandated topics: Agrarian Reform Policies, The Philippine Constitution, Taxation
F. Critical evaluation and promotion of local and oral history, museums, historical shrines,
cultural performances, indigenous practices, religious rites and rituals, etc.

Grading System:

1. Traditional Tests (40%); teacher-Designed Task (40%); Student Self Analysis (10%); Attendance
and Participation (10%)
2. Attendance: 20% total nominal duration – maximum allowable absence either excused or
unexcused. (14 weeks, 4 hours/week = 56 hours. 20% = 11.2 hrs, 5.6 meetings)
3. Final Grade:
Midterm Activity = 50%
Final Activity = 50%
4. Competent – 60 points
Not yet Competent – Below 60 points
Highly Competent – 85 points and above
